That's crazy talk. And anyone who thinks Qdoba or Moe's is better then Chipotle needs to check themselves. The only thing that comes close to Chipotle is Freebirds.
The cilantro lime rice is amazing, as is their chicken.
I like Chipotle from time to time, but anyone who calls it Mexican is crazy. It's its own thing. I think one of the reasons I could never leave Tucson is I would hate to live in a place that doesn't have real Mexican Fast-food.

The Chipotle's up here are disgusting to the max. Their salsa always has too much lime and they never melt the cheese in my quesadillas. Also, they don't have queso. That's fucked up.
We have Hot Harry's, which is pretty much what Moe's wants to be but could never touch.

That's too bad, the salsa at the one's I've been to have been tasty. Yes queso would be nice, but their guacamole is pretty awesome, so I usually go with some guac and chips.

Agreed completely that Chipotle isn't really Mexican food. Fajita Express is my go-to local Mexican fast food. Being in San Antonio (like you in Tuscon), there are a plethora of good Mexican food choices.

I recently tried Salsarita's and prefer it over Chipotle. It was really good and fresh. Maybe the best I've had as far as chain, fast, "Mexican" food goes. Well, besides Torchy's and maybe Fuzzy's. Taco Cabana is good in a pinch.

The cilantro rice is the main reason I never eat at Chipotle. Cilantro tastes like soap (and I know I'm not the only one this is true for), and I don't like soapy tasting things in my food. I do, however, always want rice on my burrito. So my choices at Chipotle are soapy burrito or riceless burrito. Either is unacceptable.

ITT: Mexican food snobbery. Chipotle is delicious.
I'm a Mexican food snob, no shame about it. People that haven't grown up on the border just won't understand
I don't think you even need to be on the border. Latinos are now the largest ethnic group in California. So we have amazing variety of Mexican food (and Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Peruvian, etc.). Out here, going to a chain for mexican food is just so wrong. You'd end up paying more to get smaller portions of worse food.

!Viva Mexico!
As long as your are in a larger city, you can do better than any chain, whether 'Mexican', 'Tex-Mex', 'Nex-Mex', etc. Just go to areas with the family run grocery stores that cater to a Latino market, and you will find lots of options.
My rule of thumb, if the menu has pictures on it so this gringo doesn't have to ask for translations, it is probably gonna be decent.

I've had lots of great Central and Southern American food in the bay area. I'm sure there is good Mexican too, although I'm partial to Sonoran and that's hard to find in the US outside of Arizona

Does anyone really disagree that there is better/"realer" Mexican food than Chipotle? Thought the discussion was just about large chains and fast food.

I don't think so. At the moment we are discussing the likelihood of finding such non-chains in locations not near the US-Mexico border. That is not much of an debate either, tbh.

All my friends from California tell you that it's impossible to to get good "real" Mexican food in DC. They also eat at Chipotle.

I don't know about on here, but I've definitely had people try to convince me Chipotle was Mexican food.

Chipotle.... Like Subway, but with burritos!
I'm from Arkansas - we love our Tex Mex. If you don't serve cheese dip, I can't go there. I am not brave enough to try legit taco trucks where if you want cheese you gotta ask for it to be 'Americanized' bc I dont think my stomach could handle it. I'm a proud tex-mex lover and I'm fine with that.

To be fair, they do call it "Chipotle Mexican Grill". Makes it easier for people to turn off their brain and assume it's real Mexican food. Just like Olive Garden is authentic Italian and Panda Xpress is legit Chinese food.

Ah but you have to be adventurous. Sometimes the weird stuff is the best stuff. When I was in Mexico a few weeks ago I had Tripas de Leche (Cow's Milk gland) from a little stand on the side of the road. It was delicious.
Used to manage a Chipotle, they won't use queso because there isn't one without preservatives that has passed their quality tests, so I doubt you'll be seeing that anytime soon. Also, you can ask for plain rice, people do it all the time. There's tons of it ready in back because they don't mix in the cilantro/citrus juice/salt until right before it's placed on the line.
They were an abhorrent company to work for, and terrible to their employees, but I will stand behind the food being high quality. There are no freezers in the stores, everything is delivered fresh and cooked from scratch in most cases.

We were visiting friends in Sacramento this weekend and there's this over-the-top restaurant called The Kitchen that does a 1-seating, price-fixe menu 5 nights/week. The food is amazing and the new chef, David Chavez, is this young (~30) guy who's worked at amazing restaurant.
One of things this place prides itself on is, whatever you want, if they have it, they'll serve it. He's chatting with us (it's set up for lots of chatting) about this menudo he made for staff meal that night. So I asked for a taste and he brought out a teeny cup with a few bites.
I know that it grosses some people out and I only eat it maybe once or twice a year, but I love a good menudo. It was amazing. The whole meal was incredible, but the menudo was one of my favorite parts.
I know that it grosses some people out ... but I love a good Menudo.
Finally! I've been on this so-called music board for a minute now and no one gives credit to arguably one of the finest Latin music boy band to achieve commercial success in the states:
Oh. You were talking about beef intestine soup. Carry on.

I get that, my girlfriend feels the same way about cilantro. I absolutely LOVE the taste of cilantro, in fact I think a cilantro flavored gum sounds amazing
And hole in the wall Mexican restaurants are usually amazing, from my experience at least. When I walk in and see the menu is in Spanish and has pictures for non-Spanish speakers, I know I'm in the right spot
I know that it grosses some people out ... but I love a good Menudo.
Oh. You were talking about beef intestine soup. Carry on.
Menudo is intestines?!?!?!?! This is why I tell my family not to tell me what I'm eating. I love menudo, but I'm not sure I'll ever look at it the same ever again.
Also, I really want Mexican food now. Settling for Chipotle.

Don't listen to them Monie! It's not made of intestines. That would be gross. It's made from the cow's stomach lining -- specifically, the reticulum which is the 2nd (and tastiest) chamber of a cow's stomach and the one that has a crazy honeycomb pattern.

Any thoughts on what's good for Mexican food around our way? Or are we just stuck with Chipotle and Qdoba?

I have casadenana.com/ down the road, they're pretty good. I've never been to Qdoba, so I can't really speak on how good they are.
They teased my area with Sonic commercials for 2 years before they built one, and everyone here had this image of some super fast food place with magical burgers and shit. There were lines down the road when they first opened the one here (only the 3rd in the state), now they're barely in business.
