Is it just me or is this really tough to get your head around on first listen? I see they're going all Margaret Atwood on us - will need repeat listens to decide what I think about this one.

Yes it is - but I'm surprised this is your first listen - they always reminded me of Iron Maiden. Oh yeah, this came out in the height of my metal mania and probably before you were even born.

Yea, I personally loved the beginning and most of the end. Kinda lost me in the middle but that's ambient elements taking over
I love weird ambient stuff, so I am really digging it on the first listen!

Yeah I'm the king of weird and ambient. That's not it. It has a discordant, unsettling, and aggressive quality to it as it goes on. It's one of those you really need multiple listens to assess.
Edit - and by "that's not it" I don't mean it isn't ambient - just that that's not the aspect I was talking about.
Quadruple negative for the win.

I was like a Maiden elitist for much of my adolescent years when I really should have been taking in much more that was coming out around that time. I wouldn't even hear anything that wasn't them. I'm slowly getting around to remedying that, and have found tons of stuff to be just as (who am I kidding, yeah right) enjoyable.

I see what you're getting at, it creeps in every now and then
I feel ya guys, but it's the same issue I have with Grimes; it meanders for a little too long. It just means that's more of a whole LP work or maybe background music...
