I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.
Of the options you gave I would say classic RHCP. After being around for some 27 years it's pretty much what you would expect from them in 2011. The first half of the album is really solid, some the songs on the second half come up a bit short, but it's a fun album, it won't convert any non Peppers fans, but it will keep their long time fans like myself happy. Also, I really like Josh on guitar, he's not a big departure from John, but you can tell he has his own style.
While checking out reviews for it on other sites, I was suprised by how much hate there is for this band online. I'm just glad at 31 I'm not jadded like all these frustrated Grad school internet nerd-bloggers.

Most people that hate on the Chili Peppers didn't start listening to music until they had saturated the airwaves. And for some reason have a problem with them not branching out with their sound in the last decade, completely ignoring the fact that they were doing that the 20 years leading up to the turn of the century.

Fans of the early and mid-period Peppers know the difference and have given up on them making a solid record that isn't chocked full of tone-deaf ballads & radio-ready faux funk.
Well, it still stands that the band has been putting out subpar material for the last decade or so.
That depends who you ask I guess. Sure Stadium.. was a little boring, but Californication and By The Way were solid.

This would be a decent reason, except if you heard/saw a group of 50+ year olds trying to rock out to some funk-rap-rock you would think it was lame.
Californication was fine (I think that was 99 or around then, so I wasn't including it, necessarily)... everything afterward just angered me.
By The Way was pretty similar to Californication, with a few more alternative sounding tracks. Stadium was a let down, I'll agree with that. I haven't listened to the new one yet.

By The Way is the only RHCP's album I would even consider listening to now. It has some lame tracks like "Cabron", but some of that stuff is still good.

Californication and By the Way are decent, although By the Way tends to drag. I was let down by Stadium Arcadium, although there are okay tracks on it. I didn't like the new album at all, much worse the SA.

So if we charted their musical progression it would inevitably look like a stock market crash after Blood/Sugar/Sex/Magic. I blame Kiedis for his nursery-rhyme lyrics, two-note-throat and his undying lust to write another "Under The Bridge." I used to really love their stuff.
Californication, to me, was one of those albums that the first half or so was good, then it dropped off terribly towards the end. Overrated record, especially at the time of release... good singles, though.

^^this (including the part about not having heard the new one yet).
The Peppers are nowhere near as good as they were 20 or even 10 years ago, but I'm of the minority opinion on this board that Roo could do a lot worse than RHCP as a Friday night headliner. Certainly not my first choice, but I've learned not to put too much stake in the headliners anyway. I also think that many people have seriously overhyped Frusciante while too readily dismissing the rest of the band's talent. I mean, he's a great guitarist for sure, but he just doesn't make or break the Peppers for me.

I've been pretty let down by RHCP releases since Californication and this didn't change that. After a few good listens a handful of tracks weren't to bad but nothing spectacular at all.
