Hey there, Inforooers!
So I'm returning to the farm after my first Roo last summer. I had a totally awesome time, but one of my regrets was not being able to stay up for any of the after-midnight shows due to being utterly exhausted by the end of the evenings. I even fell asleep trying to watch Ratatat Being a male in my early 20s, I didn't expect to be so wiped out. My tent was about a 25 minute walk from Centeroo last year, so I expect that played a part.
Any tips from Roo veterans on staying up late? Preferred energy supplements, nap schedules, etc.?
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.
^ I never thought about snorting Rogaine. That works?
Edit: The secret to staying up late is not to party during the day. Take naps between shows! Stay hydrated and replace your electrolytes! Find some shade.

Don't try to push yourself bro. That's how people get dehydrated or heat stroke (heat casualty, broader term). If you're worn out, that's your body suggesting you get some sleep and rehydrate or eat something. Go to your camp, take a sit and get yourself together. Or just pop a squat and sleep in Centeroo. If you are going to push yourself regardless, try to consume any caffeinated products after sundown to try to avoid dehydration.
I'd be really interested to know of anything I can take, drink, or eat that will help with alertness. I can't do caffiene, guarana, ginseg or taurine or anything of that nature due to heart issues. I'm kind of depressed I will never get to hang out with my friend molly, but hey. Does anyone have any suggestions? Vitamins, etc?
and ps - falling asleep sitting up to Ratatat over and over again, waking up to twinkling stars, spinning glowsticks, and crazy riffs, was one of the most surreal and amazing moments of my life... felt like I was floating in a dream... i was right there with you hahaha

Water and rest during the day. Water is a must. Staying hydrated will give you energy. Other ways to stay awake...take naps...don't listen to Bon Iver...and drink more water.

I never stay up past 5 AM at Bonnaroo... I need at least an hour or two of solid sleep before the heat comes in. I can function off of a couple of hours of sleep a day, but I cannot go much more than 24 hours without sleeping, naturally.
Also, just because it's night time, don't think that you can necessarily go "harder" (take that however, really) without repercussion. Be safe... this kind of thing, trying to press your body beyond what it would naturally handle in the climate and environment just because it's a few degrees cooler and no sun isn't safe, still.

Don't drink much and take mini naps through the day in the shade. Lots and lots of water, eat enough food. Make sure you are eating some salty foods or salty/sugary drinks too.
Practice the lost art of taking a nap. After awakening from your nap you may feel tiredness for a couple minutes, but do not give in. Take a dose of caffeine, soda or iced coffee, whatever. Have it closeby, in your cooler or backpack. You'll soon feel super-energized and rearing to go. Repeat as necessary.

This has been a problem for me the last couple times at Bonnaroo.
1. Stay at camp and relax as long as you can during the day. To me it's a matter of prioritizing acts I want to see. It sounds good to say you are going into Centeroo as soon as you can and have something scheduled for every hour over there. But in reality, your body just can't handle it if the weather is bad. This year I'm going to sacrifice some early day time acts to get to the late night acts.
2. Don't drink beer early as tempting as it is. I started way too early last year and completely blacked out before Mumford last year. My friends took me back to camp and poured cold water on me for about an hour. I was so dehydrated and hot that I just shut down.
3. Earplugs to sleep. You'll rest much better, no matter where you are camping.
4. Don't be ashamed to take a taxi ride if you are camped in far from Centeroo. I refused to take a taxi 2 years ago because I didn't want to look like a wuss. I ended up missing a lot of stuff because it was too far to walk back to camp and rest between shows.

Like everyone has said, naps are key. Find some shade and lay down or take a nap during a nice chill band. I slept thru half of Explosions in the Sky last year and that set me straight from the rest of the night.
Drink plenty of water, this is a no brainier. Camelbak's are your friends.
Don't head out too early. Of course there will be bands at all hours we want to see. Times like this you have to weigh which is more important....the early noon shows or stay at cap until 3 or 4 and be rested enough for the late night sets. For me I chose to leave camp later and be good to go for late night. There were some early bands I wanted to see but even looking back I can't imagine them being better than the parties at Bassnectar and Gogol or watching STS9 play until the sun came up.
And like Cosby said, golf cart taxis are awesome. Nobody is going to think you're a wuss or anything for taking the easy way in/out. Coming back every night I'd grab a couple $1 grilled cheese sammiches and hop on the taxi. Being camped in Stewie Griffin....the taxis were by far the best investment.
In all seriousness, get in shape before Bonnaroo. Take a multi vitamin once a day. Drink a ton of water. Avoid caffeine. Use sunscreen. Sit when you can. Get in the shade when you can. Don't stay up drinking until 4 a.m. Thursday night. It's not rocket science.
Excercise is the best advice. Start cardio now, stop a week before Roo, and you will have a ton of extra energy the whole time you are there. Pace and naps also are key.
If I average 4 hours/night of sleep average for the duration, I find I have very few problems...
Less than that, don't know how you do it, without something giving....I will select the bands I want to see, and plan around that.....in the event I do miss something, oh well....I'll get it next year..
Any chance you get to sit down on a towel/blanket/tarp while watching music is a good idea. You'r egoing to be on your feet a lot. And most of the band you'll see will be awesome. But if you're short like me, if you don't get to the head of the crowd you won't be able o see anything anyways. I find that I can hear the show just as well if I'm further back on a blanket relaxing with a frozen lemonade, some water and some vodka than if I was in the front with no room and only dirt and taller people arm pits to breath in.
So during the shows that I want to see but don't have to actualy SEE I will hang back and quench my thirst while listening to awesome music. Then by the time night time rolls around I'm hydrated, rested, and buzzed. Then I can move my way up to dance without dropping.
Why would you shower by yourself for 7$ when you can do it for free with 25 of you new closest friends?
I know I've said this a bunch of times. But seriously. You wouldn't believe what an empty cup, some soap and some new soggy friends will do on a Bonnaroo morning. It's as close to magic as I've ever seen.

I suggest 5 hour energy! Those helped me stay awake this past Roo for a good 48 hours straight!!! I was volunteering in the middle of Saturday night until Sunday at noon... so I didn't have time to sleep.. lol I went straight to check-in for volunteering right when String Cheese Incident busted out Texas... I got dropped off by a golf cart at like 11:45am right in time to see Railroad Earth from the 2nd row... of which I kept wanting to pass out while I was standing about every minute... I didn't fall over thankfully lol..
Only when you spend 5 on a leader hose and 2 on some soap. Then you shower in awesomely cold water, for free, all weekend. (this also gives you about an hour of sweat-free heat relief
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
My problem isn't staying up, it's finding a way to see the headliners and then somehow get drunk for the latenights without spending $40 on beer in Centeroo, and not making the hour-and-a-half round-trip back to camp to drink, missing an hour and a half of the latenights.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

This is the single biggest reason I invested in VIP again this year.
