Prepare for a year or two of defensive transition where they team will be better than the prior year, but not that great (Nawlins has a LOT of players that need to be cut/traded/upgraded to go from a 4-3 to a 3-4). Rob is a better DC than Gregg Williams, IMO, so if he's given the chance to make the full transition (and not fired prematurely like he was in Dallas), they'll have a shot at a competitive defense.
Also, Rob "The Wolfman" Ryan in New Orleans year-round? Sweet baby jesus will that lead to some funny fan photos surfacing on the internet.
I really don't get how that guy KEEPS landing DC jobs. He was in Cleveland for the Mangini years (as in both of them), what a complete gas bag. We didn't have the players, but we were out schemed every day. I don't know if it's the hair, arrogance, or world champion "press conferencer", but all the guy does, year after year, is run out bottom third defenses. Just don't get it. NOLA could have done so much better.
I realize you aren't going to like the guy, but I have to disagree here.
Ryan is a very visible coach, and thus a very easy scapegoat because of his abrasive style with the media.
In his first year with the Browns, they were (with what you admitted was an under-manned unit) ranked 21st/31st in pts/yards on defense. The next year they went 13/22.
In Dallas he took over the 31st worst defense in the league in 2010 and made it 16th in 2011. That's taking the worst defense and making it average with minimal upgrades.
This year he had significant upgrades at CB, but the team lost it's centerpiece (people act like Jay Ratliff is a scrub for some reason, he's an elite DL and that injury killed the defense), not to mention losing Sean Lee, their only above-average presence on the inside.
In Oakland he built a defense that was 3rd in yards allowed in 2006 (which means it was one of the top defenses in football, despite an offense that scored TEN points a game...yes, you read that correctly).
My point with Rob has been and will continue to be.....when he gets to play for a non-awful squad what will happen? He had a defense set up coming into this year that was ready to rock, and then it got hurt.
In Oakland he had Jamarcus Russell and Josh McCown and ANDREW WALTER, among others (those were the starters, meaning the best QBs the team had while Rob was there....I'd take the Buttfumbler over those guys).
In Cleveland he had...well...nothing.
In Dallas they needed a scapegoat (like every year) and Rob got the ax.
He's a very good defensive coach, he's improved defenses everywhere he went, but because he doesn't take a "hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo-ly SH*T" bad defense into a top-10 unit overnight, he's a "blowhard."
I guess I defend Rob because I am a defensive guy (played defense, coached LBs and defense for a few years after college) and people are always harder on defensive guys IMO.
NOLA's defense was insultingly bad this year (no offense, jakicker). They gave up OVER 50 yards more than the 2nd worst defense. Rob is going to need massive turnover on the roster, but his defense will not be close to that bad next year even if he's using lesser players. His system and scheme is solid (it's not as good as Rex's, but it's still good) and he knows how to extract the most talent from sub-par players if he's forced to.
He has holes in his game, but so does everyone, and for the first time in his career of calling defenses he now has a QB who can win him any game over the course of the season.

As person? Love Rob Ryan, like his attitude, guys play hard for him. That being said, he's marginal with the x's and o's. He left NE because he saw that Bill wasn't going to extend him the upwards ladder, and it wasn't because of his mouth.
I was in the vocal minority for keeping Mangini and Ryan in Cleveland, but it's become readily apparent that the switch to the 3-4 isn't quite as easy as people want to believe (you should hear the radio hacks in this town). Switching and attempting to man the 3-4 in KC was a big part of Pioli's downfall (coaching hires aside), and he's said as much. Belichick has run the 4-3 more the last couple years than the 3-4. That might change now that he has Hightower. (People credit the Bruschi stroke/and eventual retirement with the downfall of the Pats D, when in reality it was replacing Ted Johnson and then Rodney which was the biggest hurdle).
Unless your team is loaded at OLB (long, quick, able to set the edge and cover) Long, heavy DE (again set the edge and occasionally cover) and has a centerfielder, it's a difficult Defense to man. It took NE 8 year to apparently replace Johnson. Finding a WIL capable of taking on a guard/center is almost impossible.

The only thing we had going for us, when healthy, was an adequate group of linebackers. 3-4 should fit much better than 4-3, I hope.. We need to trade/draft at least one decent pass rusher and an entirely new secondary. I welcome anything different than what we have

I know that Sheard is a perfect fit as the LOLB in a 3-4, at least.
IF he can cover. We're set on the nose, and Taylor and BWinn can play end, we don't have a single 3-4 LB, unless you consider Gocong and his achilles a rush lb. D'Qwell isn't a 3-4 ILB, he needs to play clean.

The Jets do it with David Harris (surprisingly bad at shedding blocks for a 250+ pound LB who is built like an anvil), and that's why Bart Scott's true value isn't realized by most casual fans. He sprints and uncorks his entire mass into guys bigger than him for the entire game just so Harris has clean lanes to make tackles. I like D'Qwell as a player, if they can find an insane person like Bart to play the sledgehammer role, D'Qwell could actually be quite good.

Hearing reports that the Giants cut Ahmad Bradshaw. I knew they were going to be letting a lot of people go but I'm pretty shocked they didn't hang on to Bradshaw.

Incentive laden contract? Can't see anyone backing up the brinks, RB's are more disposable than razors these days. (Of course , the Browns moved up to #3 to take one that can't plant and go, hopefully that was the ribs)
Defense wins the AFC North, and that what Heckert wanted to do. How did the Jets beat NE during Sanchizes first couple years? They punched NE in the mouth on D and controlled the clock on O.
You saw the Ravens finally figure out that they weren't stopping SF living up to their D responsibilities, so they max blitzed them and forced the rookie to make a play. Now Refs allowing full contact didn't hurt, but they'd given it all day long, so you could figure the laundry would stay in the pockets as long as it wasn't egregious.
On a side note, in the year of the concussion, am I the only one that finds it out that everyone is screaming about the 4th down Illegal Contact/DPI/Holding, rather than the text book helmet to helmet shot Crabtree took on 3rd down???

Bradshaw will be a good short-term pick-up for somebody but I know that his days as the primary ball carrier for the Giants were over. When you can go younger, cheaper and faster with Andre Brown and David Wilson you do it.
I don't mind cutting down $14 mill in cap (+ savings from cutting Diehl). We need to get Nicks and Cruz on long term contracts. Canty had 2 strong years and 2 terrible years for us. He was grossly overpaid. Hopefully Marvin Austin can step up and surprise some people.

Skip tries to create controversy. As a Jets fan, Richard Sherman's season this year would fit nicely in a lineup of Revis'. Sherman has to do it for 3-4 more years in a row, but he's absolutely right it's a joke to throw out his All-Pro season and pretend it was luck or something along those lines.

Sherman is an incredible corner and probably even #2. But no one completely takes a receiver/a quarter of the field out of the game like a healthy Revis.

Sherman is allowed to throw his hat in the ring for "best CB" given the year he had (tremendous, I can go into "nerdy advanced metric" detail for you if you want) and he's allowed to compare himself to Revis since he's only in Year 2 and already an All-Pro (just like Revis).
