Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Edit: Also, that's kind of just how I am. Despite my outward arsehole tendencies, I'm generally the guy who finds nothing but awesome stuff in any lineup. I'm usually the first person to "defend" Bonnaroo every year as well.
My take on Coachella is an opinion, and yours is an opinion, but the above statement is fact. Respect.

I'd be mildly surprised if these were the only 2 US performances for both The Stone Roses and Blur. It makes sense that Grinderman is a one-off. They were on hiatus, but all the members are Bad Seeds anyway, so Coach offered them more cash to get an exclusive. The other two have played plenty of European dates already and could make a nice payday with just a small run of dates surrounding Coachella.
This is definitely not a bad lineup, but it's the first time I haven't been green with envy over a Coachella announcement. It helps that I already have a Nick Cave ticket for March, and that I don't care at all about the Postal Service or How to Destroy Angels.
Also, for those of you surprised at Wu-Tang's position on the lineup, look at their most recent tour dates. They weren't playing huge venues on their 2010 tour. I saw them at a 1000 capacity venue in Atlanta, and they didn't even sell it out in advance.

I was waiting for Pavement at the Main right next to the Outdoor and Phoenix's crowd absolutely dwarfed a reunited Pavement playing their first major show in a decade.

Blur will be one of those bands whose stage presence is going to draw you into the show no matter how well you know their music. They're the best "headliner" on the bill IMO.
I love this lineup for a few reasons. Primarily because it would allow my 23-year-old self to be really, really happy and coexist with a very, very happy 43-year-old self. I'd be going back and forth from past, present, and future the whole three days.
Happy 1993 Hob:
Nick Cave (served two ways) Stone Roses Blur Violent Femmes Jello Biafra Dinosaur Jr Johnny Marr, New Order, OMD (That's 3 performers from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack right there!) Lou Reed Evens (well Ian McKaye from Fugazi) Social Distortion (not my favorite but always liked their Ring of Fire cover) Jurassic 5 Descendents Wu-Tang Clan Dead Can Dance
Happy 2013 Hob:
Tame Impala xx Grizzly Bear Father John Misty Palma Violets (if you can check these guys, go for it, they're going to blow up this year) Bat for Lashes Hot Chip Local Natives DIIV Tanlines Lumineers Jessie Ware Japandroids Divine Fits Lord Huron etc., etc., etc.

Love the line-up. Wish I could go. Have seen Phoenix twice and they are awesome. High hopes for the new album. Was mildly disappointed with a smaller sized crowd at Glastonbury for their set, but they still tore it up. Their drummer is so good.
Because few people seem to be truly impressed by the lineup. Sure, there are some acts that would be fun to see, but as an overall festival, especially a major one, it's obviously sub-par to many people's expectations. Even those who live nearby are saying they're only going because of that fact.
So you're only critical of it because other people aren't impressed?
No, I am critical of it because I am not impressed. I thought that would have been apparent by my original comment that it would be the worst Roo lineup I'd ever seen. There is nothing exciting whatsoever about that lineup to me. I mentioned that that seems to be the case for many people because you included "(and others)" parenthetically.
Oh come on. You don't think GV loved putting a contemporary band that's played the festival a couple of times in the headliner slot when they have a new album coming out around the time of the festival? That played arenas the last time they toured the states and brought out (sorry) Daft Punk at MSG?
Phoenix has graduated guys, they're not playing That Tent in a 45 minute slot before Crystal Castles ever again.
Did everyone else already know The Shouting Matches are a Justin Vernon side project?
No, but that's awesome. I really need to dig into this lineup - every year, Coachella has lineups where I have no idea who the bands on the bottom few lines of every day are, and then like 5 months later I discover them and can't believe how awesome they are.
Let's talk hip-hop real quick. IMO, this is a phenomenal hip-hop lineup:
Jurassic 5 Wu-Tang Clan Aesop Rock Danny Brown Earl Sweatshirt El-P Pusha T Action Bronson 2 Chainz Raider Klan
That's outstanding. They REALLY stepped up the quality of the rap acts booked this year. Especially looking forward to the J5 reunion - one of the single most fun live hip hop shows I've ever seen.
Did you accidentally leave 2chainz in there?
Ill agree for coachella this is definitely a step up. J5 is huge and is the biggest reason I havent posted my ticket for sale yet!
Woke up to this line up. Some interesting stuff, wish we could get Sigur Ros again. Do RHCP have broader appeal in Cali as native sons or are they just stuck with them?

I dont think this is the part everyone is having trouble with Phoenix headlining, its the flip side where yes they are bigger then that tent opening for crystal castles but are they radiohead/dre snoop/tool/prince big?

A reporter for a popular music website recently asked Justin Vernon about the Shouting Matches and their appearance at Coachella. His response:
"I mean, it's whatever. I mean, it's good, I guess but that's my opinion. It's ok. It's a cool place, but it's also a hot place. I uh... Just do what you like to do, ya know? That's what I figured. But whatever. whatever. They asked me to come and I was like, yeah sure I guess we could do that, but we might not. I wasn't positive. But I wasn't negative either."

This. Based upon nothing more than speculation, it certainly looks like GV enjoys taking acts that have played well-received sets at the fest before and bumping them up to headliner status in advance of that group actually making "the leap." The way I see it is Goldenvoice, rather than waiting for a group to be "headliner ready" by monitoring sales and seeing them play other fests, wants to be the first one to do it and be there at the beginning. They want to make tastes, not respond to them.
Put another way, the fact that Coachella has Phoenix headlining will help spur sales of their new album, which in turn will make them look like a prescient choice to headline the show. They're dictating the market, rather than the other way around.
This is their Arcade Fire model, no? Wasn't Coach their first big festival and they've now played 3-4 times, finally headlining in 2011.

No, but they're on the same level as Jack Johnson, Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, Kings of Leon, etc. I'd argue they're actually a way better band than those four save Arcade Fire.
I 100% agree but I think its a hard sell to the average festival-goer especially if you havent seen their live show. I dont like Phoenix as a headliner here because of the other headliners surrounding them on the other days, but change RHCP with a better name and I dont care that Phoenix headlines as much. Phoenix in Blur's spot wouldnt even bother me as much.

I've been wondering about this ever since I had a chance to really study the lineup. I actually think GV was brilliant in putting this lineup together. I've been really feeling a punk revival over the past year - and it looks like Coachella is pushing this. With some of the godfathers there in various forms and some of the newer ones, Coachella may actually be helping spur a trend that isn't obvious to most folks yet.
Edit: and by "most folks", I don't mean music obssesssives who post on music festival boards.
