Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I plan on stopping by a Wal-Mart on my way in, loading up on camping gear, then on my way out, returning it all
If you are concerned at not being able to transport your cheap-ass inexpensive wal-mart camping materials back home, Coachella has donation bins available and the supplies will surely go to a good cause.
Or you could be a selfish dickwad, really it's your choice.
I make plenty of charitable donations each year. Unfortuantely, my tent at Coachella will not be one of those. FWIW I'm bringing my own tent (its small and will fit in my luggage). Its all the other gear that I will be a selfish dickwad over and returning.

Question: Are the cops/security at Coachella really as bad as the threads on the Coachella boards say, or is it just paranoid teenagers freaking out? Doesn't make much difference for me either way, just curious.
I don't know. I have been to a lot of fests and just counting current ones, say the last 5 years, Coachella might be as strict as any. Going thru the gate, you might get a complete check, and sometimes, usually later in the days, they are a bit looser. Just to get alcohol into the campground took a bit of clever pre entry planning, but I did. I've always done tent camping so I don't know how much they check out your car for car camping. Like any fest, be cool, don't do stupid things, and party once you get inside the gate. BTW, I saw two busts inside the venue one time but the dude was naked with a sign asking for drugs. Dah....cr****

No. Just don't do anything stupid and you'll be fine. Do as you normally would.
The police are helpful actually. I once had a cop rip a guy out of the car and thrown him on the ground because I knew he had taken my iPhone. It was really awesome.
Treat the cops with respect (as I'd assume you would anyways) and they'll be kind and helpful. And being sneaky with security is extremely easy. Sounds like you are dealing with paranoid teenagers over there.

Thanks, that's what I figured. Just wanted to be sure.

First, what I really love about this lineup is how many bands there are that I like and have been meaning to dig into but never have. Coachella is just a little out of my comfort zone and I'm loving it.
Anyway, now that I've listened to lots and lots of Dinosaur Jr, I've moved on to digging into Modest Mouse. I know all the singles (and Bankrupt on Selling, which is amazing), where should I go next? What are their shows like?
I don't think it's worth starting a new thread, but do we have a running list of who is going to which weekend? I'll compile it then maybe Juggs can throw it in the OP. Or not. Just thought it'd be useful. I guess the real question should be..

The Moon and Antarctica is my favorite album of theirs, but I have no problems with any of the others. Lonesome Crowded West is probably the one I like next best. Good News is great too, though.

Modest Mouse's first 3 LP's are all really really great. The Moon & Antarctica is probably the most accessible of the three, with Lonesome Crowded West being my personal favorite.
However, it being a (relatively short) festival show you'll probably hear 2 songs max from This Is A Long Drive...(their debut) and LCW. At least that was the case when I saw them a few years ago, a show I thought was pretty mediocre. I've also heard they can be hit or miss though so maybe you'll catch a great one.

Can I get a few more details on this story? Sounds awesome. How did you know it was him? How did you find him? etc.

I was sharing some corn in day parking with some friends from San Diego. We were sitting on the ground between their car and someone else's. As I was walking back to camp I realized my phone was missing. So I went back to where we were and by that time there were two people in the other car we were sitting by. I asked the driver if he had seen a phone and he said no but I got this weird vibe from him that he was clearly lying. So I took a chance and just said, "give me back my phone dude". His female copilot became irritated and asked, "why would we take someone's phone?" The driver looked extremely stressed and guilty but I wasn't going to get the truth out of them so I figured I'd just take the loss and head back.
I saw three officers while walking to camp and asked for help. I told them the story and what happened and even pointed out the car they were in (thankfully they were still stuck in traffic). They didn't really believe me at first but they followed through anyways. I hid behind another vehicle while the cop began questioning the car which now had three other occupants. The next thing I know the cop grabs a guy and and does sort of a belly to belly suplex on him to the ground. I was really excited.
The cop asked me to come over and he had the guy handcuffed on his knees. He was also crying heavily by that point. The officer handed me my phone back and asked me what I wanted to do with him. I told him to let him go, all I wanted was my phone. The policemen than began to explain to the crying thief that its not nice to treat guests like this. He made the guy apologize. He explained to me that he threatened he would do a full search on everyone if they didn't give up the property. They quickly gave it up (guess the lying is what provoked the body splash).
I'd like to add that the entire time I was in another dimension only further optimizing the circumstances. It was a lot of fun.

This will be my first coachella. I did Bonnaroo last year and plan on it again this year. I've been over to the coachella board and try and get some info but it seems filled with really mean spirited people. I'm wondering how reflective this is of the coachella crowd. I'm from southern california so I know its not a california thing

The crowd is hit and miss. I've made friends every year I've went though so there are definitely good people. You'll probably make pals while waiting on an act surely. I wouldn't get too caught up in it honestly. Everyone is there to have a good time, some are just more inviting than others. You'll have an awesome experience regardless.
Edit: And for the record that forum is a poor reflection of what the festival is all about IMO.

It's funny, I thought that story was awful. It's great that Jones got his phone back (and let it go at that) but the cop threatened a search without PC (least I don't think so, I'm sure Jugs will correct me) and manhandled the guy. Seemed a little dick.

The cop "threatened" to do a search so that they would give up the phone they were lying about keeping. To me that sounded like a bluff and the cop knew the kid was lying about having the phone. Keep in mind that Jones noticed the kid was nervous/guilty so I'm sure the cop did also.
Even so....wouldn't the probable cause be that Jones claimed that this specific car had his property and it wasn't being returned? It's not like the cop just randomly picked some car and started harassing them.
The physical violence is a little much but I don't have all the details or know what was going on with the cop/driver.

I mean, Jones was admittedly operating at less than 100%, so it's the word of an intoxicated guy vs. the driver. Again, Jones was right, which is awesome, but this irritates me on principle.
The average person doesn't know they can refuse a search, and the cop totally used that against them. I hate that sh*t.

I saw them in 2006 when they played a run of club dates in New York to test out We Were Dead material with Johnny Marr, and it kind of sucked. They only played 3 songs that pre-dated Good News. It soured me on the band for a long time, although their setlist at Pitchfork '10 was much better.
However, it looks like Brock has been reintroducing a lot of older material over the last couple of years. Dark Center, Broke, Breakthrough, Custom Concern, Cowboy Dan, and even Sh*t Luck made multiple appearances last year. www.setlist.fm/stats/modest-mouse-73d6ae69.html?year=2012

I'm definitely with you on that. I hate the way cops can (and will) go past their boundaries on searches. Personally, I have hated dealing with cops who will easily abuse their power. I had one instance where my car was very illegally searched, like one cop distracting me and talking on my drivers side while his partner opens the passenger door and goes into my glove compartment quickly.
The thing is, they found corn on me but only personal usage amount so they let me go free (after dumping the corn, that is). They thought I was "trafficking weight" or something cuz I had long hippie hair, a tie dye shirt, and just walked out of a shady bodega so they figured they could intimidate me, find the weight, and be big heroes but once they only found a bowl or two they realized they made a mistake and drove away with no ticket.
In this case, based on what I know, I feel like the kid should have just given the cop the phone he found. It's possible the cop was a d*ck with a short temper and stepped over the line and it's also possible the kid was being difficult to avoid getting in trouble. Probably a combo of both.
I haven't had much experience in refusing searches (the one bigtime search was started before I knew what was happening) but I have heard stories that if you refuse a search it'll make things more difficult. Like they may hold you and bring in dogs (if available that is) and then all they need to do is say "Ohh..see...the dog is smelling something so we have to go in". Have you personally refused searches? I've always been curious about personal success stories.

Right, this exactly what they'll do, and probably what would have happened to the kids at Coachella. Hopefully Jones has a really honest face, but my impression of the story was that this cop was just dying for any reason he could find to harass some people.
