Unless Bonnaroo was already sold out when they added Conan, I still don't really see its relevance in this argument...the argument is not that "Coach wouldn't make such a big addition," it's that "Coach wouldn't make such a big addition after already selling out." But, like I said, I wasn't aware there were so many VIP tix still available, so that changes things a little.
My point is that if he is playing tour dates around the Coachella area around the time of Coachella you think that Goldenvoice just completely ignores it because they already sold out GA tix? Like, Bonnaroo didn't have plans to book Conan but after the initial lineup was pretty much complete they saw a chance to grab him and make a big addition to the festival.
Like Horn before, I'm playing devil's advocate as I also don't think they'll add Prince. But I also wouldn't find it mindblowing if it happened..
Dude, Daft Punk and The Rolling Stones fell off. They replaced Stones with RHCP and bumped Phoenix up. They have enough money left over to convince Bowie to play, but he turned it down, so they're getting Prince.
Everything you said there was wrong, except the part about the Rolling Stones.
Prince was added to my first Coachella because evidently Portishead wasn't holding weight (this was a lineup already featuring Roger Waters mind you). But that was in 2008.
It didn't happen that way. Prince was supposedly signed on for quite some time but had hip surgery in late 2007. He was recovering from the surgery and wanted to make sure he was able to play before it was officially announced. Once he was cleared, he was announced. It just so happened to be a weak year attendance-wise, so it worked out nicely. Hard to believe this is the same festival. The grounds were 30,000-45,000 people all weekend.
I was talking to my friend that bought my coachella tickets about Prince rumor and he replied with:
Prince played 5 nights a week in the forum here a year or 2 ago so pretty much everyone saw him at least once. five nights a week for a month or two. tickets were $25 too. it was insane. yeh.. he played all those shows to help this old venue here. he's pretty amazing. he played multiple encores after the lights were on just kept coming out. I may go to bonnaroo.
It was pretty special. He played 25 shows in about a 4-5 week period back in April/May of 2011. I went to a number of these shows (including one of his shows at the 500 person Troubadour). Only a limited number of tickets were $25, but tickets were definitely reasonable. I would imagine this is why LA is not getting a date, but I would be very welcoming of another late addition to the Coachella lineup.

So I noticed the schedule prediction threads on the Coachella forum now has a call for people to contact promoters about set times. How successful has the board been in the pasting digging up that info? Lots of confirmations? A handful of confirmations? frankblack?

the coachella boardusually ends up with quite a few confirmations. most of the confirmations are +/- 45 minutes of the actual set time, although there are almost no confirmations this year.
i dunno if people have contacted promoters in the past. we all know about your direct artist confirmation thread here, i'm sure that the resonse is similar. i do remember messaging devoon facebook or something and getting a 'we don't know' response.
it's strange because some small'er' acts seem to know their set time up front while big name artists seem to have no idea. could be that the big name artists don't want to disclose that info for whatever reason.

I'd be willing to bet that smaller bands negotiate with the festival organizers themselves and are privy to all details as soon as they become available. It's my assumption that bigger name bands have managers and booking agents handling all those mundane communications and there is a delay in relaying that info to the band?
A bit of everyone I hope. I suppose throwing out a few names: HTDA-Foals-Johnny Marr-Portugal the Man, Gaslight Anthem-Tame Impalas-Grizzy Bear and the only big band I haven't seen is Stone Roses. or maybe just the first tent I find
