Are you fucking kidding me? Kanye might rap alot about how great he is but he also raps about issues of racial progression, eliminating stereotypes and serious issues. Would you consider Black Thought or Talib Kwali artists? Kanye doesnt always rap about the same things they do but he still does. He also makes many songs which elicit powerful emotional responses and contain beauty. Runaway for me has the same emotional impact of some of the best Radiohead songs, particularly Motion Picture Soundtrack or Fake Plastic Trees, and nobody would question Radioheads artistry. Finally he creates his own musical compositions, whether through the use of 808s, keyboards, or the remixing of various pieces of music and has had wild success with it. Unlike N'Sync who didnt write their music or lyrics Kanye has shown the ability to do both. If someone that deals with important issues, ilicits powerful emotional response, and creates original work is not an artist then what is an artist?

Flanz loves a good Kanye argument. Me I don't get it, if a band I love pulled that stunt I'd never go to see them again. It's not because I'm a deadhead but because I'm a music lover. You mention all the great things about Kanye, I don't dispute that. I expect them to be professional, it bothers me when a band is more than 30 min late. They got a great gig, sure most of them deserve that, but when you pull what Kanye did you let the fans down. If he plays Roo great, I'll see something else, I hold no big grudge against him. But let me say if I was a Kanye fan I'd still be angry and not want him there. Anyone want to go over the would he wouldn't he argument, sure he would and sure Roo would bring him back because it is all about money.
i was really drunk last night and probably shouldn't of posted that. but i'm not in my 90's more like 20's. i didn't realize he played keys and i agree with you that he isn't a world class musician. not everybody who makes music should be consider an artist, you wouldn't consider n'sync or Jessica Simpson an artist would you? i can understand how some one can see kanye as an artist but i don't.
and there is a lot of talented rappers out there. if they replaced their dj's with bands, like the roots, my perspective would change on rap.
and saying that b/c kanye won some grammys, that means he is good is a joke right? whoopi Goldberg won more grammys then jimi hendrix. britney spears won more grammys then led zeppelin. Christina Aguilera won more grammys then the who, bob marely, buddy holly, the doors and Queen combined. the grammys are worthless.
Okay, there really is no excuse to not know if a person plays instruments, especially a person written about as often as Kanye. But you were drunk so I'll excuse the laziness and lack of a Google search this time.
Do I consider N'Sync artists? No. Do I consider Justin Timberlake an artist? Yes (cat's out of the bag, folks, Skrillex and JT, I got man love for both). Can you see why I'd view those two differently?
Not all rappers are artists, but Kanye West is indisputably an artist. It's not even debatable, in fact. Someone (I think NoD) posted the Runaway extended version video. Pull that video up, close your eyes, and pretend for a second it's not Kanye West. Pretend it's anyone else in music for a second. Then tell me that it isn't artistic. That it isn't creative and unique and stir some kind of emotional response or memory when you hear it.
You don't like Kanye the person, and that's fine (and actually understandable if you don't like psychotic egomaniacs consumed with succeeding to spite everyone who did them wrong...even if most of those targets never did them any harm). But to say what he does isn't music, or he's not an artist, is just unfair and insulting on some level.
And I agree with you about live bands, but only in certain cases. A live band can really make a show worthwhile vs. a simple DJ setup. An example was pre-molly-addicted Lil' Wayne, who I saw with a full live band, was awesome. Absolutely awesome. Then I saw him at Roo, and it was awful. Absolutely awful. That's one example of a band bringing the level of the show up dramatically, but that isn't always the case since many times rappers just aren't accustomed to performing that way and are thrown off by it.
I don't take the Grammy's all that seriously, but when the guy has FIFTY nominations, we can call him an artist.
While I still disagree with pretty much everything you've said, at least this was a little better than the drunken ramble you had last night.
Out of curiosity, have you ever watched a Kanye performance before?

Kanye is an artist because he's expressing himself. He writes his lyrics and makes his own beats to accompany them. He knows music.
Nsync and Britney Spears were rounded up by executives and fed lines to sing all to turn a profit. It could be argued that sometimes these enteratiners become more like real artists (Timberlake is, Fatone is not).

KANYE WEST WITH A LIVE BAND
You may now change your opinion
The little documentary about him working with the strings is a really interesting behind the scenes for those interested in the "real music" side of hip-hop, people keep spouting off about.
I apologize if this is off topic. Kanye would be a headliner and all, but I know people don't like when we stray too far from HL talk. Just the example of what I said in my last post.
I couldn't think of a worse headliner than Kanye West.
I would rather watch the Teletubbies on stage for 2 hrs.
Sorry, you don't get off that easily. Explain why four aliens singing in another language you don't understand would be more entertaining than one of the best showman this generation has ever seen.
And wait a minute, what instrument did Michael Jackson play? CLOWNFRAUD!
I know, right?!?! Musicians without instruments are, just, such frauds. I mean, what can they really do? Sing? Dance? Entertain? FRAUDS!
so now you are defending a child molester? and btw Micheal Jackson is awful. good dancing doesn't mean good music. i would rather listen to an hour long drum solo, then watch mj dance for an hour. but i'm a music fan not a pop cultural fan.

Singing is IMO the hardest part of being in a band. You can't go to the music store and buy a new voice, all the studio tricks usually don't work too well live. Most great singers have to limit or refrain from smoking and drinking because of it's effect on the vocal chords. But being a great singer does not mean you have to hit every note and have a perfect voice. My prime example is Janis Joplin not too many sing with that great of emotion. And yes I know she drank and smoked and if she were still alive her voice would likely have gone 20 years ago.

I'm having trouble picking which one of the infinite number of MJ youtube vids to post right now, so I might just start posting every one, one at a time, until you recant that outrageous statement.
