EDIT:
Here's another one from Forecastle 2012. This was in a thunderstorm delay, and they did a song underneath I-64. I wasn't there, but Whoreshack and I'm 99% sure that's Gibran among the crowd. (Anyone recognize anyone else?)

After joining this board I had to Google Umphrey's Mcgee (having already Googled Widespread Panic)
and whaddya think?
(i also had to actually listen to WSP after joining on here. Had heard of them, never really listened though. I actually have yet to really listen to MMJ as well....)
Listen, I'ma gonna be honest. When I first heard MMJ it was "It Still Moves", and I wasn't so into it. I only listened to the first 45 seconds or so of each song, and I thought to myself "self, this is just some southern country fried jam band music right he're". And, at that particular moment, I was into Sufjan Stevens and Wilco and DCFC, and who knows what. But, then a year or so later I listened to "At Dawn", and saw them live. And that was it. Hooked. Now my favorite past time is dancing to MMJ and others to a campfire with Whoreshack.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Expounding on this, and getting a bit sentimental, W is surprisingly shy. At Forecastle, during MMJ, he was dancing behind me, and I would feel these fingers every now and then on my hips. I thought he was just enjoying some fungal vibes. Had NO idea he was into me. Wasn't until almost 4 months later that I caught what was going on there. :-) And we danced to MMJ fireside camping at Hocking Hills while the inland effects of Hurricane Sandy whipped around us. Love.

My least favorite MMJ albums are Tennessee Fire and At Dawn. It Still Moves had decent stuff on it, like Mahgeeta, Steam Engine, One Big Holiday, and Run Thru.

That's beautiful. <3
I'm going to hocking hills tomorrow. Or at least I want to. What fest were you at? I don't remember MMJ playing nelsonville?

We make up our own fests :-) We even make posters for them. It was our first date, camping at Top O the Caves. We slept in my VW bus. We hiked. He made me some gourmet digs. We played music on my boombox by the fire and danced. Sometimes we bring my portable record player and spin records.

Awwwe!! I see Whoreshack shirtless there. So cute. Makes me teary eyed. And Drunkle Terry. aka easymorningrebel

Can I get some descriptions so I can put more faces to names?

I follow you now. What a beautiful first date. I like you guys. Where do you live? Didn't realize you guys were in Ohio!

I'm in Akron, he is in Lexington, KY. We meet in the middle a bunch, in Columbus, and anywhere in between (Hocking Hills, Legend Valley, Cincinnati etc) Also, he is coming up next week. We are going to Cleveland International Film Fest.

I love legend valley. I fell in love there, both with festivals & a boy. It'll always hold a special place in my heart.

Do you ever come up this way for Nelson Ledges fests? Also, you and I, we're gonna get along just fine. :-)

Not my bag really. Although, they do not seem the sort of band that are much suited to home listening, so I haven't ruled them out depending on schedule - when in Rome and all that.

This has me baffled.
Is there zero jam band scene in the UK? Now that I think about it, I can't recall ever seeing a jam band on a Euro lineup.
Maybe not zero, but not a lot above that. I remember a few years Dave Matthews being advertised at the Apollo here in Manchester which holds 2,500 ish people. So it can't be non existent but it isn't common. I went back through Umphrey's dates assuming maybe I'd overlooked them and found just one show in London in 2008 to about 800 people. So that is probably a more accurate reflection. I reckon back in the day the Dead were pretty popular, but I don't think the revival thing happened here.

Ha, thats MY video.
Thanks for filming/sharing that, hadn't seen it before. That looks like a phenomenal set. Anytime you have that intimate of a setup, there's such amazing potential.
Watching that video reminded me of Yeasayer's Blogotheque videos. What I wouldn't give to experience that. Both of these videos give me chills everytime. If you even remotely like Yeasayer, you have to watch them.
In addition to the above, I saw MMJ at Leeds Festival around 05/06 and enjoyed it, but considered it at the time to be alt country. They had a brief period of media coverage here at that time which has subsided a lot since.

Both Umphrey's and Widespread are most definitely bands that thrive in the live environment. I've barely listened to their studio albums, but love their live shows.

I think the first time I officially met Whoreshack was at Forecastle 2012. He bought me a beer and immediately earned his way into my top 5 posters.
I'm thinking of moving to California, solely because my intuition is telling me that that's what I'm supposed to do. There are a couple grad programs out there I'm interested in, but my main motivation is just a gut feeling telling me to go.
I'm absolutely terrified.
Aside from the fact that that's a flimsy as fuck reason to move across the country, my family's been through a lot the past couple years, and though I know they'd manage without me, I don't want to force any more loss upon them. My brother and sister I'm not too worried about, but my mom's very...sensitive, and her depression only compounds that. My grandparents are getting older too, and I just...don't want to miss opportunities to deepen my relationships with the people I care about most.
Is there a "WTF am I Doing with My Life?" thread? There should be.
