To be fair, I don't HATE Mumford & Sons - I think they make perfectly pleasant, slight music that works extremely well in certain scenarios. They're fun live performers, and I don't find them objectionable, really. But really, they (along with acts like Edward Sharpe, Of Monsters and Men, the Lumineers, the Head and the Heart, etc.) are basically the indie-folk/grass equivalents of all the proto-grunge acts that blew up in the mid-to-late 90's. They've co-opted a genre by emphasizing the easiest/laziest bits (in this case, its big, cathartic choruses and shouts and hand-claps and sh*t). It's pop music, nothing more. Doesn't mean it doesn't have a place though.
Okay since I like all the bands in the parentheses, I'll help derail the thread. I agree, to a large degree, with what you state above. A lot of the music from those bands could be considered slight and definitely leans toward the almost cliche of big choruses and hand-claps and hey-hos etc. But you're also right that their music works well in certain scenarios, they're fun live performers, and they have a place in the festival/music landscape.
Holls is right on about the lyrics. I would argue that the Lumineers (albeit with only one album) have even better lyrics. Yes, Hey Ho is a catchy love song, but look up the lyrics for Big Parade and note the similarities to some of Dylan's best ballads and song structures from the mid-60s. Those bands mentioned (and that's an excellent collection of the best going today, by the way) are not just good lyricists, they're vocal harmonizers, which is always better to appreciate live than on record. What was Motown but a genre of vocal harmonizers but with somewhat simplistic love song lyrics (we'll call Papa Was A Rolling Stone the exception rather than the rule)? Even better, there is a great deal of musicianship amongst these bands. I haven't seen Of Monsters and Men live (except on TV), but those other bands all play a plethora of instruments, play them well, and play them amazingly well as a unit.
And I don't find any of them attractive (although I find Charity Rose bizarrely fascinating and I can't take my eyes off her at THATH shows). They're not complicated, maybe not even enduring, but for now, they make me feel good and that gets back to Juggs's point - there is a place for them.
But you're also right that their music works well in certain scenarios, they're fun live performers, and they have a place in the festival/music landscape.
...there is a place for them.
And that place is a mid-upper tier act at festivals. Most people are of the opinion that headliners should have at least a decade of experience/touring/badassery and more than two albums to pull material from before they are worthy of headlining major festivals. The Black Keys and The Killers barely qualify, and I am still trying to get over that...I probably never will because I consider both of them to be extremely over-rated. If Mumford and Sons smother festivals in 2013 like the Black Keys and Red Hot Chili Peppers did this year, people are going to be hatin'. fair warning...

Yea I'd put them as a mid/upper tier act for festivals as well. But it seems like they're being pushed as something more and have the popularity/buzz to handle it. I also think that headliners should have more than a few albums but I loved the Arcade Fire headliner set so even i'm kinda open to anything. Still....I'd hope they weren't headliners at Roo (and other fests) for a little while longer. We'll see.

So, JJ, is it a terrible, dubsteppy bastardization of modern music, or just another Muse album?

is this good?
I haven't heard the whole thing yet, just these two tracks:
but I know with confidence that I can say: If you dig their previous albums, then you'll dig this. If you've never heard their other stuff though...you probably shouldn't start with this one. Start with Colors.
