I've never actually watched this. Does anyone want to give me the 411 on what makes this show a great watch? With all the stereotypical jokes flying around, it's made out to be a dreadfully boring period drama for people in their 50's. Is there really good character development/themes in the show? I'm going to need something new to watch after I finish my current show.

It's a great show. I'm on the 4th season now and it's turning out to be my favorite. I'll spoiler some things, nothing major given away though!
There are storylines about rape and abortion in the 4th season. As well as one involving interracial relationships.
The first seasons covered some political things of the time, like the socialist party.
Season 3 covered the war and it's effects on the countryside, I believe. Season 2 and 3 maybe, it's been a while since I've seen them but it's in there! Haha There's so much more too. Hopefully someone else will jump in. I'm so into season 4 I can't remember much else.
Oh, I quite like Mary's growth throughout the series. She's not who she starts out as.
Also, Maggie Smith. She is a treasure! It really is a wonderfully written show.
