Anybody else have like, a HUGE problem with people setting up lawn chairs 5 feet in front of the main stage at this fest? It's a complete joke
No. It's a much more mellow, family-oriented festival with a predominantly older crowd. There are people who live locally and go every year, just set up at the main stage with chairs and a cooler and hang out all day. It's not the kind of fest where people necessarily need to crowd up front to be three feet from the HOT RAGING FOLK ACTION.
^This. A few people did it at Firefly last year where it was really crowded and it drove me insane. They were the only ones doing it and everyone around was giving it to them pretty hard, they didn't seem to care though.

Jazzfest finally drew a line in the sand and put a huge white line surrounding the front area of the main stage so that people in lawn chairs had to be behind that line. I hope they take it further and make a path in the middle for no lawn chairs too because that shiz takes the gotdamn forever to navigate through the sea of chair people.

If a chair person doesn't mind having someone stand directly in front of them, then I don't really mind chair people (at any festival).
I hate when people pack like sardines into any concert. A) It's not as enjoyable and music should be enjoyable, B) Music is for dancing, and you can't dance when you're shoulder-to-shoulder-to-shoulder.

Hurray for the Riff Raff just added to the lineup.
This is my first time hearing them (or even of them), and I really enjoy their sound. Spirit Family Reunion was another very pleasant surprise. I prefer my live folk music to be a little more upbeat anyways (instead of just a singer-songwriter rambling on), so these guys and gals will make for an enjoyable set.

There's no denying how inconsiderate it is to park your lawn chairs in one of the front rows and sit there like you're at home on your couch, while a hundred hungry fans can't even get through your row to find a decent place to stand. At a My Morning Jacket concert, no less. I understand that Newport Folk is family-oriented but a festival is a festival. If you want to be that close to the stage, get on your damn feet.
It was extremely difficult to get comfortable for a show if you weren't there to lay a blanket down at 1 pm.
As long as they don't shout "I can't see!" when I'm standing in front of them, that's ok by me.
Its a free for all IMO. When music starts I stand regardless of venue. I usually get the shoulder tap every show. "Umm can you sit down?" "I cant see" "Your in the way". It cracks me up. Stand up people! Yes i see your blanket is under my muddy feet. Sorry im hitting the back of your chair just so happens 20000 people are inching forward on my back. Enjoy the sight of my @ss as you sit down and enjoy the music.
Herd a girl ask a tall guy to crouch down so she could see. His face was hilarious.
When people try and rush the stage "my friends are right there". Sure they are bud.

I just discovered this festival (well, this year's lineup). Is there always a considerable overlap between this and NFF given that they're both on the east coast and on the same weekend?

I only just noticed today that the date each announced artist is playing is listed on their profile page. Looks like only one band announced for Friday so far (unless I missed a second one).
Do we know if Friday is a full day of music? By price, I would assume it's only a half day. But they posted on Twitter: "Friday is a great deal" which makes me think it may be cheaper just because it's harder to lure people in on a Friday (with work)

Last year it was three bands (MegaFaun, Blitzen Trapper and Wilco) on Friday and it was an evening only thing. It was also the first time (I believe) that NFF had Friday acts. Probably will be similar this year.

How much were Friday tickets last year? I feel like $50 festival tickets should get you a little more than 3 bands, but I guess you'd pay close to $50 just to see Wilco anymore.

I wonder if Friday this year, rather than being just one concert on the main stage, will be more like what Bonnaroo does on Thursdays - a couple stages open, with some smaller acts? I only say this because there's no way I can imagine the Last Bison playing the main.

This is what I was thinking. The fact that they're billing this as a "3 day festival" now when they've always had some affiliation with Friday shows and never called it that before (even though Friday shows were offsite until last year).

Yeah - like rather than have three "bigger" acts like a Wilco show with the Blitzen Trapper/Megafaun undercard, I could see them putting maybe 8 bands on Friday, starting around 5 p.m., spread out over two or three stages/tents.
Uh oh... I'm going to be in trouble. My parents weren't sure if they can make it this year or not, but they asked me to pick up two two-days for them. I did not.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

a) 3 + years now of solid lineups (faith in the product even before knowing the lineup) b) Stronger efforts at trying to stay up to date with the latest derivatives of (popular) folk music (expanding the market by bringing in newer and younger crowds) c) Sell outs the last 2 years (fear that it'll sell out causes front loading of ticket purchases)
