SXSW is a completely different animal from any other festival you have ever experienced. It usually totals over 2000 bands playing shows in 5 days. Every nook, cranny, parking lot, venue, bar, grocery store and most everywhere else around downtown austin will have bands play all day from Tuesday-Saturday. There are official sxsw shows and unofficial shows. You will not make it into every show you want to see. You will need backup plans and know which direction to head to achieve it. Many shows will be free, many will have free drinks. Many will be badge wristband or invite only, many it won't matter. You will be walking more intensely than festivals since you are on the street. Having a bike is great, but 3 days on a bike will wear you out. Venues can be 20 blocks apart like going from anywhere to Auditorium shores or La Zona rosa. The festival also occurs during spring break in Austin. Those people are out and about also and are aware of free drinks. It's like walking around in a giant commercial, free drinks and shows will always be sponsored by someone.
The fun of sxsw is that you don't really know what you will end up seeing. You usually can find something going on as you're walking down the street. I try and go every year, it's too close not to. I've had my bike stolen and lost my id, it's just part of the adventure.
If you have friends to stay with in austin, that's the best bet. Otherwise look into sleeping arrangements soon, downtown gets packed quickly.
My question is how expensive is it really to go? On their website they say its over 600 a ticket. Is that only if you want to go to certain shows, or is that for everything?

I have never bought a badge and usually spend less than $200 on the entire weekend. If you want to go all out, then you can get a badge, but it's not necessary. A wristband is a good option and about $130 I think, but I have never needed one either. A lot of shows will be badge and wristband only especially the night showcases where capacity is an issue. There will be plenty of free shows and some that cost money. I think Andrew Bird and Alabama Shakes was $30, but i decided to see Kasabian for free. I only paid for two shows this year. The showcase with Sarah Jaffe and a show with Trust. I think they were $20 and $10.
But yeah, the badge is kind of the all access pass, but you still won't make it into every show. I would say the hardest to get into shows this year were probably Fiona Apple playing at the church or Jack White playing off of sixth street. Some of the shows are outdoors and you can hangout outside and listen to it though. I have done that at Stubb's a few times, and a bunch of people did it for Jack White.
SXSW can be very chaotic and plans change at a moment's notice. If money was not an issue I would get a badge, but I have a great time making my own adventure on a budget. Most of the money I spent this year was at food trucks.
The only person I know in Texas (my cousin and her husband) are out in College Station. So, I've got nothing on that front. Holy hell hotels are pricey, except the roach and bedbug spots.
I wasn't planning on getting a badge, way too much $$$ for my budget. I know I can't see any big names, but with so much going on I don't mind. I just hear there's tons of bands that week, go find something worthwhile instead.
