"WHEN thinking about the state of the Republican Party, I defer to a point that the Democratic consultant James Carville made the other day: “When I hear people talking about the troubled state of today’s Republican Party, it calls to mind something Lester Maddox said one time back when he was governor of Georgia. He said the problem with Georgia prisons was ‘the quality of the inmates.’ The problem with the Republican Party is the quality of the people who vote in their primaries and caucuses. Everybody says they need a better candidate, or they need a better message but — in my opinion — the Republicans have an inmate problem.” The political obsessions of the Republican base — from denying global warming to defending assault weapons to opposing any tax increases under any conditions, to resisting any immigration reform — are making it impossible to be a Republican moderate, said Carville. And without more Republican moderates, there is no way to strike the kind of centrist bargains that have been at the heart of American progress — that got us where we are and are essential for where we need to go."
In addition to that, and this might not be as big of news in your states as it is mine, there is not yet a farm bill passed with the same deadline. If Congress fails to act by then, the usually-renewed annual legislation reverts to the one written in the 1940s. What this means is that the government will be required to buy milk from farmers at an inflated subsidy price. About double per gallon as it is now, and they'd rise for consumers to a lesser extent.
I'm sure something like that gets them (and all of us) in a lot of troublevreal fast if it happens.
8:02 p.m. ET - CNN's Dana Bash reports the House will vote on the Senate bill without amendments Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET, according to a senior House GOP leadership. If it passes the House, the bill will then move on to the president's desk.
Ok, they need to just do this and stop acting like petulant 12 year olds.

My dad is probably going to be happy if it passes.
I disagree.
I guess that's what we call splitting the difference for our future.
I don't like it, but without a deal my household loses 1/2 it's income due to unemployment being cut, and I lose my house. I have too big a horse in this race to get on my soapbox for this one.
^Same basic principle. If our family loses our deductions and his tax bracket were to increase (which the new threshold looks like 450,000 no matter what - so he's fine). The property tax on their house is already really high (NJ municipal thing) - losing the max deduction while brother is at Cornell Syracuse (sometimes I just type too fast, it just popped in my mind that I wrote the wrong school.); would crush them.
I just don't like that Obama likes to play the corner. It's not rope-a-dope it's political hackery for the sake of what end goal? Keep things relatively the same and NOT cause the military spending to be cut, while giving credence that taxes are "high enough" for those making the most profits FROM our society.
(edit: missed an important word -- not cutting military spending... even though the Pentagon says it makes sense... oy)
Here in Massachusetts, it's close to a done deal that retiring House Rep. Barney Frank(D) is going to be the interim replacement for John Kerry's senate seat. I only hope that he decides to run for the seat in June.
I think Frank is going to be picked simply because he WON'T be running for that or any other office. Not like anyone remembers Paul Kirk, the fill in after Ted Kennedy died.
And thankfully I'm not home to hear about this one. My folks hate Barney Frank, more than they hate Deval Patrick and Barack Obama. I think with my mom it's because Frank is gay. And then you know, Democrats all they do is just give money from working people to welfare bums so they can just buy booze and cigarettes and have more kids and blah blah blah.

Yeah, he's gonna be the one who runs, but I can hold out(with no hope) for Frank. Who's gonna take witty digs at the GOP after he's gone from government?
I also hope Markey has what it takes to beat Scott Brown. He wasn't on my shortlist of potential candidates. I have my fingers crossed he can run a good campaign and not pull a Martha Coakley on us.
It shouldn't be too hard to be better than Coakley. She was beyond terrible as a candidate.
Sure Frank is witty and can throw some good zingers. But well - let's consider the sweetheart deal insurance and banking companies got in the Dodd-Frank bill.

Frank wasn't perfect but he was one of the good guys.
I realize you're gucking with me but there are only a few IMO. There are a lot of people I disagree with but respect because they're honest and intellectually consistent. But sometimes it seems like LD thinks everyone is the enemy, which can't be true.
Frank for instance, whatever your opinion of the entire Dodd Frank bill, was instrumental in getting the Volcker rule passed (which I suspect LD favors and is one of the key provisions in the bill) and also played a huge role in getting DADT repealed.

I trust him to navigate the next couple months in the interest of the citizens of Massachusetts. There's no one else I want representing us during the debt ceiling debate, personally.

And is it so much to ask for some Wall St. crooks and the politicians they paid off to go to jail? Seriously, we got a lot of worthy candidates who belong in jail. The entire Republican party for starters.

I did an OFA training weekend last year, and in the subsequent interview which could've landed me an eventual campaign position*, I got asked to name things I liked & disliked about the first Obama term. My "dislike" answer was essentially what you said here. Enough of this fines without prosecutions & hard time crap. The woman who interviewed me said "Yeah, I've been hearing that one a lot..."
* I was offered the chance to establish & lead the team on my hometown turf in spring/summer before a paid fall position, but declined. I pursued a rogue state senate recall effort & candidacy with my friend for zero dollars, but zero regrets, instead.
As an aside, this style of advertising is really annoying. I believe Ford were the first to do it with their Dennis Leary/F-150/other-car-companies-are-feminine campaign, and I've seen it used in numerous other ads over the past couple of years. It's not that advertisers are held to a high standard or anything, but anytime I see this style used, I laugh about how poorly it comes off.

I'm just sick of so much use of fear to control/manipulate people. Gone are most of the honest conversations between sane individuals. People's heads are so full of half-truths and misrepresented facts that it's hard even discussing basic things anymore. The first thing I do whenever I read any news thing is check a few other sources because I don't know whether I can trust it or not.
Everything has just gotten so vile. It's a really divided nation at this point.
