So, about that Foxygen album. I enjoy all of their reference points, I just don't think they ever rise above the level of solid pastiche. The vocals approximate what made Jagger and Bowie so compelling in their primes, but he doesn't sell the soul. It strikes me as hollow.
It probably hurts that I saw them live before I heard the album. It was awful. The lead singer vamped around doing the most shameless Jagger imitation I've ever seen, and there were little tantrums and outbursts that seemed totally scripted. They are an incredibly tight band that does a good imitation of spontaneity. I'd probably just shrug them off as mediocre if I had only heard the album, but the live show rubbed me way wrong.
My overall impression is that this album is decent and a fun/easy listen. They are EXCELLENT songwriters, even if it sounds just like 60s stuff, they ape it much better than others who have tried. Considering they're only 22, a little lack of creativity is acceptable IMO. I think they could do really great stuff with the experience/exposure this album will give them.

Bearium is pretty great too. But the element is pronounced the same way, so that means it's just an obnoxious spelling of a common word. So that sucks worse.
I'm telling you, 2 years from now a lot of people are going to be coming around going "man, I used to hate Foxygen but this shtts growing on me." It's basically how I felt about Fleet Foxes, at first I thought it was just the same old folk music I'd heard before, then I pulled my head out of my ass and realized what a great songwriter he is.
Seriously, everyone listen to "On Blue Mountain" really loud and tell me you are not entertained.

Except hardly anyone is hating on them right now, the reviews have been great. I actually think the opposite will happen. Two years from now (or maybe after the next album cycle), when these guys are all over TV and on the cover of Spin, everyone's going to be saying, "I liked the early stuff okay, but god does that band suck." And that guy you know from high school, the one who started listening to Kings of Leon and Girl Talk in 2010, will remember who much you loved 21st Century and want to discuss with you how great the new single is.

I think these guys are super talented and are going to grow. KOL is not as talented. Girl Talk was in the same position but just ended up doing the same shit over and over rather than branching out. That could happen to Foxygen, but I'm betting it won't

We disagree on the current album, so it makes sense that we would disagree on their prospects. I acknowledge that the do the '60s thing better than most, but I'm still unimpressed by the songwriting.
Monster, I'm definitely in the minority on this one. But like I said above, I probably wouldn't hate them if I hadn't seen them live. I would just be apathetic.

They very well could have sucked live, I don't doubt it for an instant. The past year was basically the first time they started touring as far as I know. Touring with UMO is gonna be good for them. They just need more experience.

Giddy.
It's creepy as fuck how much this kid looks like me as a child! I have a school pic from grade 2 or 3 that is almost a mirror image of this! I'll try to find it this evening.
