Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo in 2013!!
The way I see it is that if this were to go through and things were posted in private threads, those are things that would not have been posted in public ones so what, really, is the board losing?
1-1-12 Bassnectar NYE SHOW! 1-21-12 G. Love and Special Sauce 3-1-12 Radiohead 3-9-12 Experience Hendrix 5-15-12 Jack White @ The Ryman 6-7-12 Bonnaroo 6-19-12 Roger Waters presents "THE WALL" 7-7-12 Ringo Starr's 72nd Birthday Party Extravaganza at the Ryman
Everyone here who has visited the Coachella message board has came back and reported how they dispised it for the most part. Why try to make Inforoo more like that board? Maybe this exclusiveness is what makes it an unpleasant place.
The thing that makes the Coachella board unbearable are the people that post there, nothing more or less

The answer, good sir, is nothing. If mods monitor these threads to ensure they aren't just hatehatehate groups, they will not take anything away from the board as a whole. Noobs will still post dumb sh*t in the TML, we'll still flame them, people will still play games in the Arcade, we'll still talk about concerts in the Which, we'll still have a place for Juggs to air his grievances and his random thoughts (Juggs gets two threads!? FAVORITISM!), we'll still have everyone post interesting music in Now Playing Dos, we'll still have the Direct Confirmation thread (aka Gabfrab's playground) updating confirmed acts, we'll still have the countdown thread, the girly fashion thread, the MANLY fashion thread (also known as the "protect your nuts" thread), NoD's bleep bloop thread, and so on...
None of that (or anything I didn't list) is going to go away because long-standing board members get to have a private discussion here.

See, I'm not sure this holds up. Just a recent example of this, I think I remember Now Playing posts dropping off a bit when InfoMoog first started up a Now Playing thread of its own.
Ideally, private threads wouldn't draw from attention to other threads on this board, but as Karosko (Deputy Hawk for those constantly lost as to his handle) pointed out earlier, look how little attention the TML has gotten in the past few hours while this thread has been given more attention by established members.

1) The Now Playing thread took a dip more because GL went on inforoo/infomoog vacation before Moogfest. We all know he accounts for about 30% of the posts in there. 2) Yes, TML has taken a dip today, but it's not like gold gets posted in there all the time. Wasn't yesterday where there was a multi-page discussion on fake bands in The Simpsons? 3) Saying that the artist confirmation thread won't take a dip while using the idea of needing to post artist confirmations in one of private threads doesn't really add up, flanzo.
We are all music lovers here, no matter how many posts we have or how "respected" said individual is. The bonnaroo spirit, at least as I'd like to think, is one of togetherness and acceptance and care, above pettiness and exclusion.
Private forums, it feels like, create an environment where cliques are ENCOURAGED, and that seems, in my opinion, Contrary to one of my favorite parts of being on the farm.
I realize this isn't the farm. I enjoy it for what it is. I actually enjoy sparring with horn and flanzo, and will assuredly buy both of them a beer when I see them (Tame Impala?). I like this board, and I like the feeling of community, even through the flaming and all that. Reading this thread, it gets me thinking "so am I one of the 'cool kids'?" And that kind of sucks.

I understand what you're saying, but I think the people that always post in NPD (which we'll use an example) post in it pretty much regardless of other stuff. Sure, it tapers off from time to time, but it's a consistent thread.
Will we get less random threads created? I'd probably agree that we would, but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. Threads are constantly created and die within a few days, so I think these private threads would help eliminate that (we could also alert the mods when a private thread has served its purpose and they can shut it down).
And if a thread dies because 5 people are discussing the subject privately, to me that indicates the thread wasn't really that necessary.
I think the fact that the Coach boards do this and have no issue with public discussion outweighs concerns about what could happen here.

Ya, I'm thinking maybe anyone and anything worth reading is being posted in private and all the mon clique/disliked members are posting in the public without guidance from those who know what's going on. I really don't know since I've only glanced in there a few times. Anyhow, the private forum would be great for established members, but suck for newcomers. I've already stated my feelings on the subject. There are pros and cons.

I can buy most of this, I just didn't like how you were presenting it before; the notion that posts in both forums would flourish. It was just a bit too utopic for me
Well then apologies for giving that impression, I'm not that naive. I guess my point could have been summed up better by just saying that the threads that are worthwhile will last, and unnecessary ones (meaning ones that would die off quickly in a public format anyway) will likely just take place in private forums.
Man, I just want a place where I can bro the f*ck out with my bros Flanzo and Juggs without being impeded on by custie posers like gambit and GreatAmerican. That's all I want.

Speaking of utopias, I was thinking on this some. I don't know how many people that I talked to on here that avoid the TML like the plague largely because they are afraid that someone will jump on them if they like/dislike a certain artist or album. There's an entire section of the forum that is lost to them. With private discussion groups, you open up the ability for more casual music fans to create a group without the people that they fear sh*t talking them or the possibility of these people being less intense in the TML because they have a private group to discuss whatever it is they like listening to.

Wait, what? Did I say this by accident? I'm....relaxing(?) after work and didn't mean to say that. I was saying that's one of the threads that will still thrive even with private threads.

When this thread started I was wary about setting up a private sub forum. To me that felt like creating two Troo Music Lounge's - one being invite-only. I didn't like that idea very much as dividing people always causes problems (plus it'd be two TML's that would have to be moderated). The "have-nots" will always complain or have problems with the "haves". But the suggestion and discussion made it's way more towards a group message type thing....something similar to other boards and I think there's some definite benefits to it. Obviously we don't want to do anything to drastically alter the activity on the main boards but having group threads/messages that allow interaction between a few seems to be not much different than what happens now (with PMs). Obviously, we'd want to upgrade it and make it better than it currently but I feel like this is possible. We'll be looking into this and trying to find the best solution so that everyone can be happy.
We don't want to split inforoo. I would be sad if a portion of the regular posters cut back on the TML because they had a private section. But if some people want to have a private chat to share links or discuss certain topics or set meet-ups without outside interference I don't think that's a huge problem.

P.S. part of me just wants a thread where I can discuss college football without having to here baselessly disparage the SEC. I will also be free to feel good for steph when Clemson wins that way. ;D

Like a group where only Channel Orange haters are allowed?

It's what you gave the impression of saying. I may have been reading too much into it.

I have taken abuse over my music taste in the past. I will take it in the future the next time I don't drink the Kool-Aid on a certain album. It doesn't really bother me.
I think people are too caught up with thinking that private threads will take content away from the main boards. I look at the private threads more as an avenue to discuss stuff that wouldn't get discussed at all because it's too public.
Everyone is looking at the Coachella board as an example of a place where nothing good happens in the public spaces. But I think it's inappropriate to assume the private groups are the cause of the asshattery over there, rather than the asshattery necessitating the private groups.

I don't think the artist confirmation thread should be public at all, but that's just me. I don't think the public face of inforoo should be encouraging or even allowing any one with a computer to email booking agents pretending to be a pregnant woman.

This happens every year about this time. Its the month before the lineup drop where anticipation is high and we need something to complain about. I started a thread last year about a "newbie waiting period". I'm also proud to say that is my only locked thread in 5 years.
I don't 100% agree with having a private section on a public message board. Its irritating, yes, but no matter how you cut it, its just not right.
The last time this argument came up another board popped up and a lot of veteran posters were lost to that. I don't wanna see that happen again. Its a hard thing to overcome.
That said, the TML is becoming a joke. Remember life before insider? This place wasn't spoonfed the info, we looked for it. We sniffed it out and in a lot of cases, we found it (re: Direct Artist Conformation Thread). It gets old reading "Where's Insider?!?" every 3 posts and holy shiz, the Bowie argument, the fact of the matter is everyone should have the ability to be involved and shamed till they delete their account, if not.
Notice how the board runs in the off-season? Yeah, I look forward to July too. I look forward to spending my time with my friends and learning about new music and making meetup plans at other festivals. Inforoo to me isn't about Bonnaroo anymore, its about music and friends and all the other things that we are all here for.
