Has anyone else been hit extra hard by the flu this year? The one time I get a flu shot I end up with convulsions and coughing up blood. I'm just getting over it about a week later. Is this a regional thing to the Southeast or is it bad everywhere?
No, that all happened in one night and the next day was much better. Plus my doc said no since I don't have insurance. Time for a new doc, for sure. These same symptoms have been flying around the Knoxville area for the last couple of months. I'm better now. I guess that's why I'm asking. Was it this bad in other parts of the country?
The flu is really bad this year everywhere. It came on fast and early. The CDC has declared it an epidemic. The shot is turning out to be only 63% effective when we were originally told 90%. I'm an immunizer, and your reaction is NOT normal.
The good news is that a flu season that starts early usually ends early. It may have peaked and is on it's way out. (kinda like Apple )

Yeah no kidding, I got bit by a guy when I was walking home from school today. Since then, I've felt pretty terrible. The bite wound is swelling up and I've been feeling pretty confused. It's probably nothing to worry about though.

You probably need to cut off whatever body part he bit.

It's this damn bi polar weather. Goin from highs 78 to 28 overnight is fucking with everyone's immune systems. The fact I've not gotten sick is amazing since I work at Walmart and everyone still comes in when they're sick.
We learned our lesson. DH, son and I all had a flu shot but darling daughter did not. My daughter got the flu three days before Christmas and no one else in the house got sick. Tamiflu is the best thing out there if you identify it early. You've got 48 hours.
What Druid said. The flu shot this year seems to be about 60 percent effective, but that's still a hell of a lot better than 0 percent if you don't get the shot. Type A flu is the predominant strain this year, usually means a worse flu season.
Whether you've been immunized or not, if you have rapid onset of fever (often 101-102), profound weakness, dry cough, body aches, with or without runny nose, nausea, and appetite loss, get your butt to a health care provider and get on Tamiflu within 48 hours.
Use antiseptic (i.e. Lysol or Clorox) wipes liberally at home and work on surfaces such as phones, doorknobs, remotes, and other things commonly touched by multiple people. Wash hands frequently and/or use antiseptic hand gel. If you have any common sense at all please find it from the remote corners of your mind and use it. Don't try to be a hero and go to work sick or send your kids to school sick.
If you do get hit with it, stay hydrated and use tylenol/ibuprofen for body aches and to keep the fever down.
Coughing up blood and having convulsions are NOT normal or even typical reactions to either the flu shot or the flu. Ebola, maybe, but not the flu.

Seems we've had a lot of people with the Influenza then Norovirus one-two punch, rendering every orifice spewing some kind of vility for approximately a month.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
the Norovirus that is circulating is pretty wicked too. It typically is limited to 24-48 hours. Understand that this is NOT an influenza virus and not covered by ANY flu shot or vaccine. The best way to defend against it is hand hygiene, and of course, good common sense.
my response to people who tell me "I've never had a flu shot and never have had the flu" is that before December 7, 1941, there had never been an attack on US soil. It always starts somewhere.
Flu shots are a huge government conspiracy. Actually a vaccine containing a calming agent. It's the reason why violent crime decreases so much in the winter months- people are more docile.

Thankfully, I haven't had the flu in almost 10 years. That was the only time I had the flu, and I was staying with two of my friends from school (I was in 10th grade, I think) while my 'rents were out of town and we all got the flu... it was a fucking mess, I was so sick and weak I could barely walk.

I do not partake. Thus I have to wear a mask and a blue badge of shame at work. My socially acceptable answer as to why is that I don't even use regular anti-perspirant or regular shampoo or regular soap, therefore I do not want whatever unknown additives that the vaccine may contain injected into my body. And my PCP frowns upon it for the same reasons.
The more likely reason is that Toby Cosgrove, who is the Trotsky of the healthcare world, has made it "mandatory", and I don't like to be told what to do. And I'll risk the unlikely scenario that I become infected just to give him the middle finger.

I am a nurse and I do not get the Flu shot. I will tell you why. It has nothing to do with the shot and false facts about it and more that I believe, "If it does not kill you, it only makes you stronger."
I disagree with the everyone getting the Flu shot. I think it should be used for people with "weaker" immunities. That being people, if they contacted the Flu, they would die, like the Elderly, which the CDC says is people over the age of 65. Which the CDC also says, 90% of deaths related to Influenza are this group.
I believe healthy people do not need a Flu shot and we need to have a "fight" every so often. If we continue on this path, I will tell you why I see as us facing a huge problem in the future.
When your body is infected with influenza, the Flu, your body goes to war. It goes into fight mode. Think of playing video games and you learn that pressing the buttons and moving the controller in a specific pattern, allows you to beat the opposing foe. (I think of Mike Tyson Punch Out when I think of this, although Halo occupies my time now.) Your body does the same thing. It has a fight with this virus and in this process of "battle", antibodies are produced that match and are able to fight off that bug. Your body develops a Specific Acquired Immunity, which means you will hold these antibodies for the rest of your life. Yes, you will feel like sh!t during this time, but when it is over, your body will have the skills and knowledge that if it ever sees that specific bug again, it will be able to defeat with ease. When you get the Flu vaccination, your body does not go to war. Cut up pieces of the invading army, a dead virus, is injected into your body. Sure, your body is able to examine these part and learn what is coming and in the short term will be able to defend itself from that virus, but our body does not learn how or see this bug in action, so it does not fully understand how this virus works and is unable to fully develop an immunity to it. 6-9 months done the road, if your body was to encounter that flu bug again, then you will get the flu. This is according to my local infectious disease doctor.
To recap, if you get the Flu, your are immune to that strain for life and if you get a vaccine you are immune to the strain for less than a year.
Do strains mutate and if so am I immune to the mutated stain of the Flu that I had 3 years ago? I am not sure if strains mutate. I would say they could and I would rather face a mutated strain this year with the immunity form the previous Stain than face that stain with no immunity.
Well, I get the Flu shot so I do not spread it to others. That is true and will help stop the spread, but I still say, Horsecrap! You stop the spread of influenza by not coming in contact with someone who has the virus. I believe when you have the sniffles and a runny nose, then you are actively fighting a bug and a cough spreads that virus on anything with in a 3 foot range. People who feel the need to enter the public when they have runny nose, slight couch, SHOULD WEAR A MASK! And use alcohol on every thing they touch. What do you think is going on in your body? You body is at war and you are fighting off a virus and in this process you are an active carrier and can spread that virus with ease. Education on 'Respiratory Precautions' when you have sings of symptoms of the Flu or a cold is needed. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and sneezes like a duck... If you have S/S of a cold and you feel the need to go into the public, WEAR A MASK! (when I say mask I mean a breathing mask, something that covers your mouth and nose)
This is what I see in the future. Say every year we all get a vaccination to the Flu. We are able to dodge it this year, and the next year, and the next year. For 25 years we were right on, we dodged that flu bug, then we just got lazy and guessed wrong. We thought it was gonna be strain A, but strain B came up late and just happened to be more popular then we thought. Now we all have the Flu. It spreads like wildfire, maybe it has mutated since any of us last saw this bug. It is strong! Then there is a mad rush to get out a vaccination for this strain of Influenza. That cost money. Money we do not have. Then millions and millions of people need antibiotics and hospital care. There is not enough stock piles of supplies, Tamiflu is in short supply, so the price of it skyrockets. With the growing trend in cutting money to health care, we are limited on resources. The already stressed system is overwhelmed and can not tolerate the large amount of care that is needed to help the sick. Many, Many people will die. We will not be talking about the terrible flu of 2013 or the bad flu of 2020, no, we will be talking about the Black Flu of 2037, well, I mean some of us will be talking about it.

My two kids and I got it at the beginning of December. We were knocked on our asses for 10 days, and weren't completely healthy for 18 days. By the time I had enough energy to get us out of the house, the doctor couldn't do anything for us. He did tell me to "get some rest," then looked at my kids, and laughed in my face. So that was sweet.
I can't decide which is worse: to be sick as shit and have sick as shit kids to take care of, or to be sick as shit, and then have your kids start to get healthy and all full of energy before you.
I think I was more sick after last roo, though. The sister and I came home with Pertussis. I never, ever want to be that sick on the farm again. I actually cried and wanted to go home on Saturday night of last year. I fought through and enjoyed Sunday, but it sucked hard.
