I guess I worded that improperly. Metal is metal. Electronic is Electronic. Jazz is Jazz. But jam bands fit into the Rock genre, and I have a hard time believing so many of the people who like this lineup, also dislike every single jam band. It's still guitars, bass, drums, etc. If the members of a jam band are good musicians, I don't see what there is to dislike. People absolutely hating Phish or Umphreys is a little silly to me. If it's not your favorite I get that, but you can't knock the talent that some of these bands have. I believe any "music" fan should be able to listen to any piece of music from any genre with an open ear. I don't hate or dislike any style or genre.
If you are into Jazz, I can understand someone hating Metal and/or electronic music.
I really hate hardcore/scream music. Not everyone can listen to that with open ear. Maybe a few bands, but not every band within that genre.
See that makes sense to me though. Scream music is very unique. There really is nothing unique, trendy, or gimmicky about jam bands though. That's why the hate confuses me so much. To love one rock quartet one day, and then hate Phish the next, seems inconsistant to me. But hey, what do I know?
When will people realize that there is a difference between "hating Jam acts" and "wanting Bonnaroo to switch up the Sunday Jam Headliner"?
Also, if you are just voicing your opinion about how you wish the lineup is different, why is it wrong of us to voice our opinion about how we think its damn near perfect?
Am I really trying to use logic on lineup day?
I never quoted you are anybody simply looking for something different. I'm specifically referencing people who say "so and so sucks" or, "I hate so and so". I think you missed my point, so I'd hold off on the logic for now .
Well, Phish is awful. Even though I enjoyed that festival very much, they're horrible. Taking the late-night spot of another artist sucked. The fact there is so little jam on this is a small make-good for such a grievous error as that.
you do realize this is a Bonnaroo message board right? I get that it's not the same jamfest it was in the past but to come on here and say "Phish is awful" still doesn't seem right...
I do, but, yes, I think Phish is awful. I'm sorry for offending you. I'm not sure there's a rule that says you can't badmouth them here.
Yea but Eddie Sharpe didn't invent that sound and also there were questions of how authentic he and his band were when they started because his "sound" in his previous bands used to be way different than what it is now. So perhaps they lifted the sound from someone else but lesser known?
No doubt, but there's a difference with adapting a style of music that results in perceived 'inauthenticity' and literally lifting actual parts of the music itself. Like people have mad beef with Mumford cause they're from Britain and they play this brand of americana pop-folk that they allegedly stylized after OCMS or like Avett or someone. They didn't take actual parts of those other bands songs. I'm not saying Edward Sharpe is Patient Zero of the AIDS that is Nu-Folk, I'm saying that its kind of hypocritical to put OM&M on a way higher plane when their music is so derivative of ES.
OM&M Lumineers Edward Sharpe and Mumford and sons are only one level higher than boy band shiz to me. the only reason theyre better is because they can play instruments. first time i heard om&m i was like wow this is some crappy copycat stuff and i never listened to much edward sharpe/mumford, but it didnt take much to hear its more of the same.. these bands belong on some middle school girls ipod not at bonnaroo.
that being said... im extremely happy those are the only complaints i have about this list...
So, what are the acts on this lineup that have a reputation for putting on a fantastic live show (Obviously outside of the top 5 and a few obvious popular bands like mule, PTM, and t-shorty)?
I saw Dirty Projectors last year, and thought they were fantastic. They harmonize really well.
I'm saying that its kind of hypocritical to put OM&M on a way higher plane when their music is so derivative of ES.
You're on a very slippery slope here. As Dylan, the king of derivative music, recently said to Rolling Stone, you try it and see how far you get.
Jesus Christ how many times do I need to clarify? I'm not saying Of Monsters & Men is a bad act cause they're derivative of Edward Sharpe, or that Edward Sharpe is a bad act cause they're derivative of whoever inspired this mediocrity of a genre. I'm saying that thinking one is way better than the other is weird & counterintuitive to me, because their stuff sounds stupid similar.

See this. This I just don't get. Awful? Are they really playing their instrument poorly? Do you just not like them that much? Or are they awful? It's just rock music people. Lighten up.
Here's why I don't like them: I find them boring. I have gave them a real shot in 09 and found myself just bored out of my mind (and please don't tell me to go find some corn; corn shouldn't be a requirement to find art interesting) and ended up wandering Centeroo for a few hours. I find them to be a bastardized version of jazz and rock, and not one that I necessarily like that much. The self-indulgence that the bands show is pretty... smug? I'll admit that they can play their instruments quite well, but that doesn't mean that I have to like the end result.

Divine Fits were beyond fantastic when I saw them this fall. Not a show to miss.

This lineup is too diverse and lacking certain areas of music. I think they spent too much money on Macca. They deviated from previous trends of Major Rock Headliner of the last 6-7 years. I think they focused too much on currently popular acts which is concentrated in the indie and rap music artists. No real wow they got them band other than Billy Idol.

I'm not offended at all. I just like to point out when someone makes a statement like "(insert band here) is awful" instead of expressing an actual opinion like a decent person and saying "I don't enjoy (insert band here)". When you make a comment like you did you're just trying to get a response from people. If you think before you say/post something, you'll be surprised how much less shit you'll get.

If you must know, the harmonies are like a fork in the eye.

Alright I can totally respect that. I think even you could admit after typing this up that awful is a bit of an exhaggeration now, right? That's really what I didn't understand. Not liking something is totally fine by me. Calling it awful didn't seem to add up though. I love rock, and I love jazz, and I think Phish blends the two together quite well.

I saw Of monsters and men play a showed out show in Philly last year, Philly is a big reason why they blew up but when they came out all I can say is damn.
SO TIGHT for a young band, so powerful to. just an overall great show and experience, glad to be able to dance around and sing on the farm.
(p.s. at the show the lead singer even made a joke about how they don't know why they're so big b/c they just write super simple songs) I think its more of the sing along factor to it all
Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but I found this article that quotes Capps saying there is another Superjam or two already in the works. I wonder if McCartney might wind up in a Superjam.
There are also a few bands confirmed here that are not listed in the lineup.
While I'm a bit sad to see the jam heavily downplayed this year, there are other jam festivals it still feels like a very unique line-up for other reasons. R. Kelly is doing Pitchfork, but that's still a daring and exciting choice, IMO. Where else is Swans playing? John McLaughlin, Sam Bush/Del McCoury and the quacking Superjams are all pretty great snags as well. Add in the smaller names (like Bernhoft) and I think it shapes up to be pretty special.
I know there's other festivals, that's where my money's going this year. I'm in college though, I'm trying to do a number of festivals this summer. I enjoyed roo last year and this is disappointing, already have scamp and waka on lock. Roo still has it's own vibe, just not the one that set it apart. It's not about having unique artists, it's about having a certain vibe. The long sets and camping and yada yada yada, those are all stolen from the jam band scene's staple way of doing festivals.

Lucky for you, I actually explained why I don't enjoy their music just a few posts furthur (get it!) down.

great. next time just avoid starting off like a douchebag and everything will be fine...
The hate that jam bands get on here makes no sense to me. I'd like to think he majority of us are "music" fans. So how can you dislike every jam band? What is so awful about it? I don't really understand...
I don't hate jam bands. I hate the fact that people feel that they are entitled to a 4 hour unopposed set to close the festival simply because it is tradition. I am not a jam band fan, however I have no problem with them being on the lineup, but I don't feel like they should headline because jam bands "built" Bonnaroo. They should headline because they deserve it.

“We are not consciously trying to not program [jamband music], but the process of booking the festival is an ongoing discussion,” Capps admits. “As we learn about which artists will be available at the time of the festival the lineup takes on a life of its own. We kind of follow that thread. We love a lot of the great jambands and they will definitely be returning to Bonnaroo at various points in the future.” Capps also admits that he didn’t notice the lack of a shed-size jamband until the festival’s lineup was revealed.

Oh my God.
An odd statement made slightly odder with inclusion of Billy Idol.

Please explain.
Radio 1045 put the song LITTLE TALKS on the radio and out of nowhere everybody around the Philadelphia area knew the tune. The show sold out in less then 10 minutes at the Theater of Living Arts. They were kinda like a big introduction of that band to America so you could tell they were just fucking thrilled to finally be playing there. The place was packed though, and it was on the release date of their album which i'm pretty sure they did on purpose (or booked Philly on that day) but anytime they play Philly they sell out....they did a free show for 104.5 and I think it was the most people that have been to one of the free shows.
