I fully expect some reggae and bluegrass, maybe even metal, to be added later. The big glaring hole in the lineup for me isn't really a genre thing as much as an unexploited market: the GenX 90s nostalgia band. Even Coachella has that aspect covered with Blur and Stone Roses and Violent Femmes (more 80s, but still popular in the 90s). The closest we have is Wilco, which became way more popular in the aughts, and R. Kelly. No Beck, Weezer,Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Black Crowes, Ben Folds, Cake, Toadies, etc. I guess it was the perfect storm of the lack of touring bands and conflicting tour dates, but it just struck me as odd how the whole decade of the 90s seemed to have been passed over this year.

Maybe we should wait a few more weeks until after some of the adds before stating that the lineup is missing this or that. Without taking the comedians into account, we likely have 6-8 "bigger"musical acts and maybe 15-20 cafe acts added.

Indeed, I would really like to see some early-mid 90's bands coming through. Any of the ones you name would have made excellent additions to this already good line-up. I think one of the problems is that a lot of good 90's bands just don't even exist anymore much less tour.
I do feel partially responsible for Billy Idol appearing this year. When I took the survey after last year I put down that I wanted some 80's music and BLAM Billy Idol. So you're welcome.

No 90s nostalgia act?
Haha! Of course, how could I forget Mr. UHF himself, the Amish rapper.

No 90s nostalgia act?
Weird Al is timeless. He knows no decade. Just think, his career has far outlived the vast majority of bands he's parodied.

I love The National cd discussions on here. I brought it up earlier before I had no idea who they were a few weeks ago and they've always been put back on in the mix of things, they are truly fantastic.
Personally I like Boxer the best. Probably b/c the first song was Fake Empire which I listened to like 53 times in a row before moving on though and then the rest of the album was just as good.

There are a number of acts on the lineup that released music in the 90s.
I'm with jess here. How does a lack of jam/reggae/world/metal/punk translate into diversity?
this whole festival tilts very indie this year, which is fine but do not try to claim it is a diverse lineup.
Jess, serious question here: if most of the bands on the lineup strike you as "indie" bands, do you think it's possible that the "indie" tag has become overgeneralized, superficial, and nondescriptive of the music? If that many bands with that many different sounds all strike you as "indie," is there a chance that that term can actually be applied to a rather diverse spectrum of bands?
An example to illustrate: I think The National and Death Grips would probably both be considered "indie" to some, but if you listen to their music, it could not be more different.
Additionally, wouldn't you consider Bjork somewhat of a "world music act?" (FTR, I'm not necessarily arguing Bjork is "world music," just pointing out the vagueness of these labels).

roomantis, you will not be disappointed by The National. I've seen them.... a lot (I think 3 times just in 2010?) and they do not disappoint. See Phil's GIF Sanctum for evidence of Matt Berninger's drinking habits and overall awesomeness. Definitely get High Violet next.

I'm ready for the hate, but I actually like Macklemore and Ryan Lewis after just hearing them for the first time today. From what I understand, they are this year's Mac Miller-type artist, aka the frat boy pop hop artist. But Thrift Store is catchy as fuck and Same Love is a smart, pro-gay rights song which is pretty surprising. And some of their other stuff is decent. I don't know if I would see them or not with everything else on the lineup, but I wouldn't purposely NOT see them.

I'm actually with you. I don't think they are that bad, but their fans get them (perhaps unfairly) placed in the frat-rap sect, as you point out.
Not neeeeeeeeeeeearly as bad as Mac Miller or Yelawolf IMO.

Hey man i'm all aboard the Macklemore Train as well.. I enjoy thrift shop and a lot of his other songs on his album. I see hime being thursday? Your thoughts, depending on what's going on during his set i'd probably check him out.

No chance he'll be on Thursday. Very, very slim chance he'll even be in a tent. He'll play midday on What or Which I think (thinking the Wiz Khalifa spot from 2011, who I think was a pre-pre-headliner).
Thrift Shop is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I know its not an amazing song or anything, but its fun. However, I listened to the rest of The Heist and thought it was pretty bad.

Really? I hadnt even heard of him until Sasquatch came out. He has completely flew under my radar for some reason. I am surprised he was billed so high. Do you really think he is a What or Which artist? I listened to Thrift Shop and was not at all impressed.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

I am with A$AP Rosko that he will be on a stage. His single has been playing all the time on the top 40 station in Knoxville.

I agree, but have to emphasize that, at least to me, Macklemore is nothing like Mac Miller. Maybe frat boys will be there- I dunno- but Macklemore has an Atmosphere influence going on.

I had never heard it until I looked him up on Youtube yesterday. I had no idea he was that popular.

Quality doesn't dictate popularity.
I know that, especially pop music over the last decade or so.

That happens with me every year it seems. Some act that everyone else seems to have heard of that I somehow am oblivious too. I only connected Macklemore with the song I had heard last week, so don't feel alone.
