Our kids are coming home to finals Tuesday and Wednesday. We have a 12 hour trip, 9 of us in a RV, not a great amount of space to rest up or study. I'm really curious if there's a magical "leave at this time and you'll beat he traffic" time.

Yup, what Phi said. If you can be in the RV pulling out before the Sunday What closer, you should be good. The downside to this is they always have a conflict of doom of awesome acts closing Which and the tents Sunday. You will feel terrible skipping those, but you got to do what you got to do.
I have stayed for the Sunday closer and leave have left right after the past two years. We get a hotel room right outside Manchester for Sunday night so we can shower up and sleep in a bed. We have never had an issue leaving. It is pretty simple and painless.

I wasn't going to say anything because I thought it might have changed over the years. I've almost always stayed until the morning, except for 07. That year we left right at the end of the Closer and it took us about 30 minutes to get to the interstate. No real issues at all.

I know this thread doesn't ask about day parking, but just in case anyone is wondering, I drove out Sunday last year after Phish with zero traffic. Day lot was half empty and the road was clear.

Leaving is almost never much of a wait. The thing is some people leave as early as Sunday morning while others stay until Monday, so you've really got a staggered exodus and since you don't have to stop and check everyone like when you're coming in, it never really takes that long to leave, regardless of when you go.
I know I won't leave Sunday night again. Left last year halfway through Phish in the rain after a weekend of heavy drinking and 2.5 hours of sleep a night and I was hallucinating. Not off of substances, just pure exhaustion. It took us over an hour and a half to find a vacant hotel. Don't do that. If you're leaving Sunday night, book a hotel that's close in advance.

Most years I have left Sunday before the headliner or durin' and have never had an issue. And on those years I stayed sober on the last day. Safety first!

We must have been camped near each other otherwise there were multiples idiots trying the same trick. We left Sunday evening from Access during the closer and it was actually fine though.

We were really close to the entrance/exit off the highway and had no problems leaving, but it was closer to 1 a.m. Traffic started getting really heavy between 10 & 11 p.m around us.
