Back in 2004, the magazine got a bunch of musicians, critics and industry folks together to assemble a list of the 50 greatest artists of all time. They called this list “The Immortals,” and a little while later they expanded it to 100 artists. It was an interesting concept, with other musicians writing short articles on their heroes. (Elvis Costello wrote the entry on The Beatles, for instance, and Warren Haynes wrote a piece on The Grateful Dead.)
In light of the past few years, Rolling Stone has decided to update their list with 14 new artists whose work they believe will stand the test of time. Artists whose names you “wouldn’t be surprised to see on a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot at some point down the road when they become eligible.” The list does not have any particular order to it, but Phish is now ranked amongst the likes of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Rhianna, Beyonce and Green Day—though bands like The Roots, The White Stripes and Wilco are also included. So what do you think?

I went thru the list. BTW, a simple list would have done from them would have been easier then a slideshow. I didn't see many people or groups there that I might be kicke off for any of the new ones. Phish, PJ, Beyonce, GD are the only ones I would consider of that list.

I agree but a lot of sites use these slideshows now. I believe (am not sure) it helps for advertising. Instead of clicking on one page with a list that has ads people have to click through a bunch of times, with each "page" of the slideshow having a new or different ad. So they essentially get 13 pageviews as opposed to 1.
I don't write code (cept some cobol), but yea they get you coming and going. I really hate sites where there are pics but you can't save them. Open source helps, but alas, we are at their mercy. I got into an argument yesterday about how I think FB is a bit intrusive imo. So without going over it again, did you notice if Ten Years After was on it. Poor Alvin ... cr****
Actually not bad - though I'd argue that Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and the Strokes are all missteps. The Strokes first album was one of the most influential albums of the last 20 years, and even though their second was great, it's been diminishing returns ever since. Similarly, while Gaga, Rihanna and Swift are all massive in the pop world right now, they've been around what, at most 6-7 years? There have been plenty of artists who sustained a large run in the pop consciousness over a similar time span yet fade from view and become punchlines. I think, due to the ephemeral nature of pop stardom, along with the often meteoric rise and corresponding fall these artists undergo, you need to have a bit longer of a timeline.
Absolutely. Especially when you look at the pop stars included on the original list of 100 greatest performers.
