I'm making the kids try some music lessons this summer and my 12 year old son wants to try acoustic guitar. Any advice on the guitar size or brands we should look at? I'd like to keep the price down (anybody have one in their closet collecting dust ) but I don't want to get him a complete piece of crap either. Thanks!

For $100 you can get an epiphone acoustic and with some good strings it won't sound too bad. For another $50 you can get a fender. Jasmine's aren't too bad for a starter either. But guitars are like golf clubs in my opinion, always buy cheap and figure out if you'll even like it. For a young guy tho I'd probably just get the epiphone. The extra $50 is gonna get you the fender name and a sturdier body but would it really matter to him?. If you're wanting electric look into the fender squire combo packs which are usually around $199.
I always buy a cheap instrument while I learn how to play it. I got a cheap mandolin online because it intrigued me. I got a cheap lap steel too. While you're learning its not going to sound very good anyway. And if they don't like it you're not to far invested. I would even try my local pawn shop w a musician buddy, see if you can get a good deal there on a used guitar. You can find a quality started for $100 easy.
Musicians friend is your friend. There is a ton of great starter stuff on there, all sorts of instruments. If you're kid takes to it you will want to get them a better one within a year for sure, but to just start off you can't go wrong for a $100 bucks.

I agree with the cheap part! I don't know what your budget is, but I have found really cheap ones at pawn shops, and I got my daughter's first guitar at target for around $50 I believe (although it was a few years ago). she has been playing for awhile now and loves it! I started her out with a smaller, kid-sized guitar but she has a standard size now and it's much better. she's also 12, so if he is just starting I would go with the bigger size.
get lots of picks, and I do think it's worth investing in either a stand or a case. if you just lean a guitar up against a wall bad things can happen. good luck!
Definitely agree with the recommendations so far. And don't forget about used gear! My first guitar was a used Ibanez fer around $150 plus a small dinky amp.
Check out www.rondomusic.com/. I don't have personal experience with them (I've had a bass on my Amazon wishlist that seems to get passed over every xmas), but I've heard good things.. the price is pretty nice and may be a good fit for a beginner.
Edit to add: They also have 3/4 size guitars if you're looking to get a smaller size instrument to start out..
