Don't hate me. I was dragged into it at a young age by my dad. My choices were Alabama, or no football.
Sorry. I'm from Knoxville. I don't have a choice.
Understandable. I've lived in Tennessee all my life, minus a year I spent in Arizona. Middle TN is a bit more diverse in terms of college football, at least, compared to East.
they were discussing Tenn football today on sports talk radio. talking about how some SC fans expect their run to end soon, because Tenn "will be back" and the guy was asking what is the basis of that thinking? yes they won a national championship and had a some good teams. but what makes Tenn a shoe in to be a national power or even a top 20 programs? look at them the last 5 years. they have been really bad and are not even as good as vandy right now. are they going to get better? sure, but who's to say they ever get back where they were before? it was interesting, because I've said they would be bck myself. and kinda hope they will to take SC back down a notch.
I have to sneak in here and give a healthy WAR EAGLE!
Serious question: Did Auburn get an actual quarterback this year?
Unfortunately no. I'm not to worried considering we can't get much worse than last year. Auburn has 4 guys competing for the job. I hope there is a sure frontrunner and them not just hoping for the best. Malzahn has his work cut out for him this year.

All eyes are on JUCO transfer Nick Marshall though.

I don't get that thinking. What is to say any particular team is going to rise to prominence or not? Yes, UT has not been doing that hot over the last 5 years, but how are you going to judge a program over such a small time frame. UT is the 11th all time winningest program in NCAA football and 10th in overall winning percentage (with programs over 600 wins). You just can't ignore that kind of tradition in a game that relies so much on tradition as a building block for programs.

maybe, they were making the point that SC has better HS football talent, which is true. the difference is we are keeping it in state now, instead of letting it go to TENN and FSU. also they were comparing Knoxville to Columbia, what's the difference? not much.

I don't know if it is different there, but I have learned from Knoxville sports radio that most people who call into sports radio are idiots. Just putting that out there.
Regarding South Carolina holding onto their talent, I did a little comparison. Players from SC on UT's 2013 roster: 5 Players from SC on UT's 2005 roster: 5 Players from SC on UT's 1998 roster: 5 At once, there has not been some precipitous drop off in the amount of people we are getting from SC and also, it's not like SC is some big pipeline state for UT. If I am worried about any state, it is TN because traditionally, UT has always had first pick of every recruit in the state with Vandy getting the leftovers. This is not so much the case anymore.

If nothing else, all these situations expose the NCAA for the hypocritical system that it is. They are far from being crippled, but at least the public support they have had is waning.

maybe the number hasn't dropped, but you're not getting the best players anymore. you're not getting Sean Ellis out of Clemson's back yard. that doesn't happen anymore.

I compared the star ratings for 2013 and 2005.
2013 (3,3,4,3,3) 2005 (3,couldn't find a rating but the guy started 5 games in 4 years, 3, 4, 4)
It's a little better in 2005 but not by enough to suggest that there has been some terrible decline. Plus, you ignored my larger point that SC is not one of UT's main pipelines.

the main point was the best players aren't leaving this state now. SC is getting most of them. so Tenn isn't getting the best players from here, they're not going to get them from AL,FL or GA. so where are they going to come from now?
I cannot wait until the NCAA is broken. It will take years and years, but it'll happen and it's going to be spectacular.
Heard they were wanting 50% of profits. That'll hurt. A Clemson player is part of it & I just read why he joined the suit.
Robinson's inspiration to join the suit came a few months ago when he learned the same lesson former Minnesota wrestler Joel Bauman learned earlier this year. When you're an athlete at an NCAA institution, your name and your face do not belong to you. Robinson wanted to get a job to earn extra money, but he couldn't work regular hours because of his commitment to the football team. So he sought work with more flexible hours. He hit upon 5LINX, a multilevel marketing company with a business model similar to Amway. While such companies certainly have their drawbacks, 5LINX does offer direct sales. In Robinson's case, he intended to sell mobile phones and phone plans.
Someone in Clemson's compliance department noticed an uptick in business-related posts on Robinson's Facebook and Instagram accounts, and Robinson was called in to meet with compliance officials. "According to the NCAA, the rule is that a student-athlete can have his own business," Robinson said. "But they were saying that I couldn't have it because I couldn't detach my name from it. They were saying I couldn't promote it. ... I didn't see a reason for me having a business if I couldn't promote it."

So let me get this straight: your thesis is that UT is unable to get the best players from SC now because of the rise of Clemson and SC (which is apparently downgrading one 4 star to a 3 star in a 5 person group per roster) is going to possibly prevent UT from ever returning to national prominence... sure, Sang. Also, for the 2014 class, we have 4 stars from 4-5 different states, so yeah, we're still getting players.

you ignored the part where I said the best players and the part about not getting them from those other states either. you've fallen behind and you may not get it back. but trust me, I hope you do get better, because SC being good is getting old.

Ignoring our current #1 2014 class in recruiting since it is partially skewed due to us having more commits, you do realize we are still 10th when you rank it by the average stars of the class, right? (Clemson is #6 currently in average in case you are curious.) Regardless of where we end up in the end, I think it will be an improvement over the slide we have been on in the last few years with us peaking at #10 in 2009 and sliding every year until we bottomed out at #21 in 2013.
Going back to the larger point about UT making a comeback, I think it comes back to finding the right staff at the right time which is something that, as a Clemson fan, you can appreciate. We have all the other pieces. We're in a legit conference. We make it on TV (even with our recent record). Facilities are good. Tradition is good. Fanbase is ridiculous. Attendance last year was 80k+ for every home game including Kentucky, which was at the end of the season after Dooley got fired. We just need to find someone that is going to put some W's up.
