Radiohead Metallica Phish And please don't hurt me, but... MMJ. I'm sorry! I don't think they're bad, per se, I just don't get the mass jerk-off-fest they inspire!

Radiohead is too downbeat and "intellectual" to me. By intellectual, I mean that I don't get any "heart and soul" in the music. I don't feel like the people playing it are passionate or connected to it.
Metallica is horrible and always has been. All their songs sound the same. They are the ancestors of Nickleback. Also, I don't like the actual band members. A bunch of pretentious douchebags.

^^ Your opinions makes me sad, but I must correct you on the members of Metallica. My husband worked for them and only Lars is a total douchebag. The rest are really nice guys and treat their crew and fans really well.

I can't categorically say that I don't like an entire genre of music. I think every genre offers something- at least a few artists I could enjoy. It's just a hard concept for me to wrap my mind around.
And, yeah, I don't think Metallica are assholes (Lars I have no idea).

Yep. During the 2010 tour, he was helping one of the members of Lamb of God with some addiction issues. They are really good guys.
Just because you do some charity work, it doesn't mean you're not pretentious or unlikable. If that was the case, Madonna would be universally loved and every star would have an African baby on his/her hip.

Also I feel like a lot of the hate of Metallica is due to Lars. Lars is definitely a dick, but Kirk is definitely not, and the same probably goes for James and Rob.

I know this is some sort of preconceived gut notion, but if you were to watch or read an interview from the band, you'd have to rethink this assertion. They are passionate about their music to the point of anxiety.

How is he pretentious, then?
They put out trite, repetitive music, but have egos the size of monster trucks. I never really noticed them, but then that whole Napster thing blew up. And I totally understand why they wanted their music removed from Napster, but then after Napster when to pay-as-you-go, Metallica still refused to share their music electronically. The do offer electronic versions of their songs at this point, but they will only let you buy the ALBUM, not a single. That just smacks of arrogance to me. "Our music is SO good, that if you want a copy, you have to buy ALL of it. You're not allowed to just like the single, you have to give us $15 bucks for a bunch of songs you're not interested in." In fact, they have said, "If you won't spend $16 for our CD, then we don't want you as a fan." Well, I'm sorry, but that smacks of elitism to me.
Of course, they have no problems releasing cd's made entirely of covers and remakes. So not only do you have to pay for a whole cd, you have to pay for a whole cd of music they didn't even write.
In their interviews, they come off as arrogant and unlikable. I don't feel like they are connected to their audience or really even care about the people that listen to them. They just give me the impression that they play for the money and as long as they're getting the money, they don't care if you're happy with the product or the way they do things. I wish I had quotes and snippets from some of the interviews I have seen, but unfortunately I do not.
Suffice to say, I feel like they're hypocritical and money-hungry. They have no respect for the people that made them rich and famous. Volunteering for a group that only helps musicians with drug problems (you know, as opposed to all people with drug problems, again something that makes me feel like they're ignoring their fans and people that aren't rich and famous like them) isn't going to change that impression.
And almost all rap. It just has never connected for me. There have been a few bands that took awhile or just needed the right circumstances for that connection (Wilco is the best example) There are a few rap sings I find enjoyable. I do enjoy The Roots, in a live setting. But I do not own one rap album I have listened to more than once or twice. Just not for me.
My neighbors this year kept mentioning about how they were looking forward to seeing Imagine Dragons play. "Did you even read the lineup people!?!"
I do like Imagine Dragons. Their first radio single is not representative of their music as a whole. Very pop-ish, when their music is more rock-like.
And I understand the confusion. Imagine Dragons came out at the exact same time as the Lumineers and their songs tended to play on the same stations. "Ho Hey" and "It's Time" aren't similar per se, but the lead singers do sound somewhat similar and I think they appeal to the same audiences. Thus people thought they were the same bands.

Maybe so, but when I'm listening to their concerts and music, I'm not listening to their interviews. That feeling doesn't come across in the music. Maybe it's BECAUSE they're overthinking it to the point of anxiety that I feel that way.
I'm going to avoid listing the easy targets like Imagine Dragons or fun. or any of these kinda popular radio-lite faux-indie pop bands because it's too easy.
Alabama Shakes The Avett Brothers Dawes Deer Tick The Beatles Tupac The Eagles Megadeth String Cheese Incident anything that could be described as "jamtronica" except the New Deal and STS9 Drake Skrillex Bassnectar pretty much anything that's just wobbles and womps and dropzzz Zac Brown Band Jimmy Buffett The Beach Boys Crosby, Stills & Nash New Order Depeche Mode ...I could go on and on.
Lets keep it manageable and just list the stuff you like instead.
