It really wasn't harsh at all. Despite your rant about other fellows in "your generation," your allusion works so poorly in this instance you might as well be talking about a llama movie. First, it's moronic to ascribe some sort of "group consensus" to a band most people have never heard of. Second, I think if someone says to a Sigur Ros fan "I'm just not that into this band" most Sigur Ros fans would likely say something along the lines of "ya, they have a pretty niche appeal." In fact, I find it almost impossible to imagine that anyone who knows you and your completely linear taste in music would ever suggest Sigur Ros as something you might like.
More broadly, I think this parable is less applicable to the modern music landscape than ever. Music criticism has literally never been as widespread and robust as it is right now; there is always someone who will "bravely" criticize an artist's body of work. Maybe, on occasion, a song or artist will gain noteriety for a work faster than critical analysis can be ascribed to it. Cee Lo's "Quack You" comes to mind. Everyone had heard that song ten times before anyone bothered to point out it wasn't actually that good. But that has more to do with the speed at which information and ideas spread than any sort of "group consensus."
Can.
Ok I'm sorry, I get it some people actually like Sigur Ros. I wasn't trying to say otherwise. There are also people who act like they like them to impress people.
I disagree the parable is less applicable, in the internet world where showing off what you are listening to in real time it is more applicable than ever. We all act like we like(or don't like)a band more than we do to affect how people think of us. If you claim you don't do this you are not being truthful.
I think my use of the parable was taken a little too literally.
I'll go back to my linear music tastes and shut up.
Sorry, maybe my porridge was a little too hot in that last comment.

Um. I don't do this, and I'm being truthful. It's honestly kind of sad that you're admitting to this.

Fugazi.
I don't believe you. Everyone does this to some end or another.
Ex: The cute girl I work with has no idea I despise The Lumineers

See, the difference is that I have a spine and the ability to stand behind my opinions. So you can believe me or not, I don't care, but you might want to reconsider your position here. Not everybody is concerned about how other people view their tastes.

Get a load of how much this guy cares about making other people think he doesn't care about what they think.

bacon, I want you to think about something. Why would an old married jerkstore give any fvcks about what people think about their taste in music? We may keep our mouths shut in regards to some subjects here and in public to prevent butthurt, but many of us here have no reason to impress anyone by lying about anything....especially our gotdamn taste in music. You should tell that cute girl that you work with that you think the Lumineers f'n suck and get it out of the way. If she can't handle your honest opinions, then she's not worth dating. Unless you're just planning a tag and release type smang or something. Then proceed with withholding your honest opinions until you smang them sh*ts.
Off topic - I have publicly declared my love for Culture Club, Wham, Ace of Base, Men Without Hats, and who knows what other God-awful bands according to the "cool kid" circles. And yet I still know that my music taste is better than anyone else's. It makes me a snob, yes. But an honest one, and I'm wearing real clothes.
Off topic PS: Also there's admitting you're not into a band and then there's telling everyone that their music taste sucks and a band they love is horrific. This is something I tend to avoid. Demeaning someone else's likes and dislikes is different than being openly honest with your own.

Old married jerkstore. Your 32, give me a break. But your a Leo (barely) so I will cut you some slack.
In my youth, when Queen Victoria was still on the throne, I admit I did say I liked a band when I did not. It was to impress a cute guy I was trying to date. The band in question? Megadeath.
