Yeah Cole lacks everything you need to be a good MC except an audience, which unfortunately is the only thing that matters.
I did see him live and he was actually not bad, so he has that going for him.
Yeah, and the #colemine won't accept anything other than universal recognition of their dude as a rap genius.
The worst is when his fans try and put him on the same level as Kendrick (sometimes higher...), but when you ask em why they say that he's "soooo relatable" even though his stories are the most pathetic and limp-wristed attempts in the mainstream

I do think that's his appeal though. Most rappers portray themselves as the biggest and the baddest, J Cole's the "nice guy".
Wow that exploded quick. I mean I'm no #colemine (whatever the hell that means), however I think FHD was one of the better mainstream rap albums I heard last year. I think the fact it followed a major label debut that was a train wreck and a sophomore album that screamed of so-so mediocrity didn't help.
I also think that FHD feels more like an artist in control. The man did put out some of the best mixtapes among his generation of artists. FHD just feels like a more welcome return to that.

A step further than that he's from Fayateville, which isn't as "relatable" as larger hip hop demographics i.e. NYC, LA, ATL

My problem is I listen to a J cole album and think that its good and then never feel the need to listen to it again.

Or you could say that that is a more relatable location because most of his fans are younger suburban kids, but regardless of his appeal or his persona he isn't that good. End of story

You don't think he's comparable to most of his contemporaries, though? I have a hard time believing that anyone with the exception of a few current mainstream hip hop artists (which is the category he finds himself in) are miles ahead of him.

I think it depends on where you draw the line referring to mainstream rappers. Because in my eyes he is one of the smaller "big" rappers, but if you lump him in the group with like Chance and ASAP there are many better. But I suppose there are worse rappers that are bigger.
Cole just doesn't have anything to say. None of it resonates. Plus, he seems to feel that he can become great by constantly comparing himself to greats.

To be fair, doesn't every rapper do that?
Not so much so that it becomes a thing about them. His last two albums should've been opportunities for him to define himself as a rapper. Instead he just talked about how he wanted to be great.
Thoughts on Rodeo? I think Travis has shown a lot of improvement in the studio. His production has gotten more interesting and his delivery when he raps doesn't sound as bland as it used to. That being said a lot of the album is pretty hit or miss for me.

Lyrically still pretty poor, but I actually really liked the album.
Also can we talk about how Bieber has a better verse on it than Kanye?

Kanye was still more memorable for me. When I saw he had Beiber on there I thought maybe they'd do something really cool, but I could have done without him on the song.
Flying High with Toro y Moi is by far my favorite song on the album though

TI surprise EP. It's good. I love this "albums coming out on Friday so I can bump them in the sleigh on Friday night and all morning on Saturday before football starts" thing.

Seems like the NWA movie doing so well has opened the doors to many more biopics about the rap industry.
Just read that Jonah Hill and Michael B. Jordan are being eyed for a potential Rick Rubin / Russell Simmons Def Jam movie and there was something about Big Boi saying he and Andre would be discussing a potential movie based on their career recently.
Yeezy Season has been approaching since Kanye dropped Only One on New Years. I'm tired of watching Yeezy Season in the distance like the It Follows demons. Get to me already.
I didn't like To Pimp a Butterfly nearly as much as some others did, evidently. I love King Kunta, though.
I revisited TPAB on a long interstate trip recently after a few months of not playing it and enjoyed it more than before. Momma, Alright, Institutionalized, and Hood Politics still stand out for me. I've come to appreciate "u" more with time.
