It's been nice watching how good Noot d' Noot has gotten over the years. They have gone from being that annoying, go to Atlanta opener, to something I would go out of my way to see.
My wife and the crowd seemed to enjoy $2 Fab (I think that is who it was). Apparently, they he has some big radio hits. My wife was laughing at me because I had no idea what the songs were and why everybody was going crazy.
The thing about this show, is that it is a very corporate event. Red Bull made a big attempt at appealing to urban, plugged-in, hipster types. They had live art, craft drink bars, grassy areas with rocks and trees, and unfortunately, a ridiculous hype man on stage. He was one of the most swole black dudes I have ever seen and he felt the need to be as intense as he could be. While the Black Lips were setting up, the house music was all loud bass drops with this hype man going shouting and jumping from speakers. It all seemed very wrong for a Lips show and I was very uncomfortable. The Black Lips seemed very uncomfortable. But, the hype man left the stage and the Black Lips launched into Sea of Blasphemy. Beers flew through the air, moshing commenced, and it was a mutha f*cking Blips show! There was a huge collective chuckle after the first song, and the band seemed to "nod" to the audiene in a way that says, "Don't worry about this not being our scene, we are still going to rock your face off." Which was great because I thought it was going to be a short, toned down set and it was anything but. Complete with deep cuts, new songs, and fan favorite ragers. Awesome show. Just f*cking awesome. I absolutely love that band.
I don't know about you guys, but growing up through high school/early college in the south, Three 6 Mafia was a motherf*cking staple. Juicy J was so much fun for me and my wife. Juicy J has certainly rebranded himself into, what reminded of, Danny Brown. I'm no sure how he has that much energy and parties like he does at his age, but he looks great and has tons of charisma.
I wish this bill was going to other cities for guys to enjoy because, through all of the hype man, corporate BS, it is a total blast.
