These seem to be two commonly compared bands....anyone have their own take on this comparison/ideas on which is better/general opinions about the subject?
I'm a big fan of both, and have been for a while. If I had to pick my favorite (very specific) style of music, it would be the indie-influenced folk revival.
3 years ago I would have picked The Avett Brothers. Now, without a doubt, I would pick Mumford and Sons.
My (minor) problem with the Avett Brothers is that their ballads are great for a listen or two, but do very little for me after an extended period of time.

I am also a very big fan of both. I've loved the Avett Brothers for years and years. They're a long time favorite of my closest friends and we see them as a family nearly every time they're in town. That being said, Mumford can move me in ways I had forgotten existed until I saw them live. Jesus, those boys can play and they wear their heart out there for everyone to see/hear/feel. Both bands are very genuine (in my opinion) and oh so talented! I'm going to have to go with Avetts as my favorite of the two though, mostly because of my long lasting history with them, but also because Mumford is a little over-played and as much as I feel their sound when I hear them, nothing pulls my heartstrings like Seth Avett's harmonic voice. It's really a tough choice. I can relate more to the Avett's though, too. I also really love how Mumford is a little more upbeat. Meh, I shouldn't have started in on this. I can't give you a straight answer! -_-

Bigger fan of the Avetts. I enjoy both but the Avetts have proven themselves more IMO. I know people hate on their newer album and it's definitely polished compared to their earlier stuff but overall I think they're damn awesome. Mumford are solid but nothing extraordinary.

I gotta agree with this sentiment in its entirety. But also what k2b said

A good chunk of their material has worn thin on me. In fact I'm kinda growing weary of the current bluegrass/folk revival. My pick for Avett is based on their sentimental significance to me. I got to see them at the Variety Play house (a smallish venue in Atlanta) before they exploded, Emotionalism tour, and it just blew me away. Mumford struck me as good but not as good. That being said I firmly believe Punch Brothers >>>> Avetts or Mumford.
I've seen the Avett Brothers 4 times (all before their most current album), and Mumford twice (both before Babel). I am seeing both this summer and am looking forward to each performance as I'm sure I'll hear plenty from The Carpenter and also from Babel to gather a better opinion of each release in a live setting. I have respect for both groups of artists but can openly say I wasn't thrilled with either of their current releases. I absolutely love The Gleam(s), Emotionalism and I, and Love, and You and also Sigh No More respectively. However in a choose only one scenario it would be Avett Brothers all day.

Side note on that: When I first discovered Mumford on the 2010 lineup, I quickly fell in love and listened to them often. One beautiful day, I was driving around. The sky was blue and the sun was shining. I had a big iced coffee in hand that tasted just right. I was in such a great mood... so happy! Then "I Gave You All" started playing. I burst into tears- sobbed hysterically. Any artist(s) that is/are passionate enough to control my mood like that is pretty darn awesome in my book.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

For me it's The Avett Brothers without it being much of a competition. I do enjoy Mumford & Sons as well but as far as a favorite between the two, it's not even close. I've seen TAB 6 times now and Mumford twice. There is no one on this board that could have seen the same 8 shows and went with Mumford as the better of the two bands.
As far as live shows, the most recent Avett shows I've seen has had several songs with Seth rocking an electric guitar. While I love their acoustic melody as much as anyone, I sure wish they'd go a little further down that electric guitar path(Ex: Paul Newman vs The Demons). Not exclusively but definitely explore it and see what happens. Seth is a great acoustic player but he has rockstar talent hiding under the surface that comes out with the electric in his hand. Or atleast this was the case for the last 2 shows I've seen in person.
Avett Brothers was one of the most boring bands I have ever seen ever.
Where'd you see them? Festival? Or their show?
At Bonnaroo. I think I was expecting to much because of the hype but I still dont get it. Mostly the comparisons to Mumford is what brought me and the country "twang" made me leave. Theres a fine line between folk and country music sometimes and they just take it way to country for me. IMO their closer to Lumineers then M&S sound wise. I think "Country" (ironic) just wails on his banjo and the British accents just numb my senses because in theory i shouldnt like M&S as much as I do.

How much of their set did you stay for? I haven't heard many people describe their live show as boring so I'm curious. Every single time I've seen them (at festivals and regular shows) they've been one of the more exciting acts who bring tons of energy and crowd interaction. But everyone's different. They work for me...can't wait to see them at Newport

I just really couldnt connect. I made it iunno maybe 5-6 songs in before I headed out. If I could rally behind the music it would probably be more enjoyable. I really just dont see the M&S comparison here though. Not even close to compare these two bands.
I disliked the Avetts' latest (too polished), but judging them by their entire body of work, I think the Avetts have significantly more depth in their music. The Ballad of Love and Hate is pretty close to being a perfect song, in my opinion, and a style which I can't picture M&S approaching.
I've seen the Avetts 6-7 times and Mumford twice. Generally I like the Avetts both on record and live much more, but Mumford's last album was better than the Avett's imo. I'm interested to see what the new Avett album will be like since they described it as being very similar to the last one in interviews.

Couldn't agree more. That song is damn near perfect and as mentioned before, The Gleam is fantastic as is Emotionalism and I wasn't a fan of I and Love and You until listening to it many times. I grew to love it. Mignonette doesn't get a lot of love in my group of friends but it's one of my favorite albums and though I adore The Carpenter, I agree it's almost too polished. That's what they were going for, a more polished sound, it just doesn't sit as well with me as their earlier albums. I enjoy the roughness and the country twang they put on some of their songs. That being said, my favorite song on the album is without a doubt 'Down with the Shine', which was written long before The Carpenter was ever released. I heard them play it the first time I saw them, about 5 years ago.
I don't mind the polished sound too much. "Life" is easily one of my favorite Avett Brother songs (although "Life" may be the rawest song on The Carpenter).
I just wish they'd limit their use of piano ballads. For instance, "I Never Knew You" would be 100 times better if the plinking piano lines were traded out for plucking banjo lines. If I wanted to listen to Ben Folds Five, I would listen to Ben Folds Five and not the Avett Brothers.
Also, they need to go back to mixing some songs with energy into an album. Asides from "Paul Newman" (which is a complete separation from their folk roots), the only song that really gets me moving on their last 2 albums is "Laundry Room" and I have to suffer through 4 minutes of moping to get to the final 1 minute of action.

Awake My Soul does that to my mood, as well as soooooo many Avett Brothers' songs!
I have seen both in concert and I have albums from both bands but I can't stand Mumford & Sons. Their music is boring, they seem fake and I can't stand the British accent. The one album I own of theirs I got as a gift and I've only listened to it once. It was so boring that I can't bring myself to listen to it again. I left their show at Roo in 2011 after only a few songs. They just don't do it for me. On the other hand, I love The Avett Brothers! I seriously can't get enough of them right now. I saw them two weeks ago at Red Rocks and they blew me away!! I like "The Carpenter". It was kind of boring the first two times I listened to it but something clicked the third time and now I really enjoy it (I'm actually listening to it right now). I didn't really get into them until "I and Love and You" but I really wish I had paid attention to them years ago because I always went to see other bands over them at Roo. It's definitely a Roo regret.

Ditto to basically everything you just said..except I love The Avett Brothers enough that I saw them at Roo last year even though I had just seen them a few days before at Wakarusa..I definitely prefer the Avett Brothers, but I thought the same thing you did about Mumford and Sons being boring until I listened to their albums a few times...it definitely took me a while to catch on, but once I did I realized they do have good lyrics (in a different way than the Avett Brothers) and their music is good in certain moods.

The Avetts were doing their thing years before Mumford & Sons. I've always viewed Mumford & Sons as a watered-down version/rip-off of The Avett Brothers. It's been a few years since I saw them last, but I've seen the Avetts several times and every time they put on a great show (haven't seen Mumford & Sons and don't care to.)
Just my opinion.
