The Avetts were doing their thing years before Mumford & Sons. I've always viewed Mumford & Sons as a watered-down version/rip-off of The Avett Brothers. It's been a few years since I saw them last, but I've seen the Avetts several times and every time they put on a great show (haven't seen Mumford & Sons and don't care to.)
Just my opinion.
Be honest, if Avett Bros had hit it big and M&S was still poking along, your feelings would probably be reversed. That being said, I get tired of the "they were around first" argument. There really is a finite amount of music genres. If we'd like to hear just one take on a certain style of music, there'd be no sense in ever going to another music fest, right? Yes, there is a variety of genres at fests, but many acts are in the same vein.

This video is hilarious! Mumford & Sons poking a bit of fun at themselves....
. I couldn't stop laughing at this. I'm glad they recognize their style enough to make fun of themselves. Going back to the main topic the Avett Brothers just have more charm to me than Mumsons. They have many raw songs along with the occasional polished song. Mumsons on the other hand sound the same in a lot of their songs. I do like a few songs from Sigh No More ("White Blank Page")
Everything I'm seeing and hearing is telling me this new album is going to be just as bad as the last one
What else have you seen/heard?
I read one interview recently that definitely made it sound like it'd be similar to the last one. They talked a lot about working with Rubin and his influence and all that so I could see it getting the same kind of response from people. Especially if some of the songs are leftovers from the last one. I enjoyed the album but not nearly as much as the rest of their discography. I'm hoping after this one their next one is sort of a "back to basics" approach and they do their own thing. Or maybe they can work on another live release.

I don't necessarily dislike the Rubin influence, I and Love and You is a very good album, but the last one was nearly unlistenable for me. I saw an interview where they said they was basically a part 2 to the last one. I've seen a few videos of them performing new songs and they pretty much sound the same.

Yea, the "part 2" is the same sort of message I was getting from what I read. I feel like the new one has some decent songwriting but it's just not exciting. It doesn't scream out "Oh man...you've got to hear this" like I felt when hearing some of their earlier albums.
I agree about the I and Love and You being better, even with Rubin. Not sure what the change was from that to the Carpenter but it could be them just trying to ride the wave and become more popular. I'll give this one an honest chance and I'm sure I'll like a handful of songs like from the Carpenter but I'm hoping the overall album stands together well. I don't have high hopes at the moment though.
I really liked the new one they sang at Newport Folk that will be on this album but that was also influenced by seeing them play it live with just the two brothers in an intimate setting. Not sure how it'll sound on the record.
Ya I felt Carpenter was them attempting to make a popular album and all they ended up doing was dumbing it down and taking out all of the elements of their other albums I love

Yeah, I'm not exactly excited for this new album. I want to be, but The Carpenter didn't turn me on much. I'm worried this album is going to be pretty flat and I agree that hopefully after this, they'll kinda get back. I appreciate and respect their evolution; It just doesn't feel as good and I hope they can evolve while still being the band we all know and love, ya know? -_-
