That, young Padawan, is a very thoughtful and good question. While it is hard for me to understand what it's like to be gay, I certainly believe that a gay person would want respected, famous, whatever, people who were also gay to be able to publicly say that they were gay and it's ok. However, I more strongly believe that no matter how many people might be helped by someone coming out and saying it's okay to be gay, personal is personal. Even as a celebrity singer with a talk show, she is well within her right to not talk about whatever aspect of her private life she chooses. I do wish strong people like her who have money, fame, credibility would be okay with talking about being gay (if in fact, she is) - I also recognize though, that one's sexual orientation shouldn't define who a person is - and I could see that as a concern for some people.
Does it make her a hypocrite, or the choice strange, for officiating weddings that involved gay couples? Not in my book - it would be strange to me, or hypocritical to me, if she had made negative comments about being gay or maybe even lied about whether or not she was gay. But as far as I know she has not, and it should have been as if Madonna or Macklemore had been the actual officiant. In fact, I actually forgot at the time that Latifah was someone who some in the gay community were asking to be open and public about whether they were gay or straight.
You misspelled Padawan, old man.
For me, I see the issue on two points. One, the whole idea of the marriage ceremony was that all these couples of varying orientations were getting married at the same time to signify that the love they feel is singular regardless of the gender of the person standing across from you. With that idea, it shouldn't really matter the orientation of the person officiating the ceremony because the love everyone feels is the same. Second, it's just a larger issue I have where there is this idea that people feel they deserve to know all the ins and outs of a celebrities private life. There's multiple people that I have met in real life where I have no idea what orientation they are because they haven't volunteered it and I don't think it's my business to ask. It's just fascinating to me how that decorum disappears whenever someone is in the public eye.
My edit came nine minutes before your post. I think your beard slows down your criticisms responses.
On a serious note (because this topic is very meaningful to me) - excellent points as well.

It was actually me trying to help one of the boys with his schoolwork and properly formulating my ideas (because it is a meaningful topic for myself as well) that slowed my response.

Yea, I just got a weird vibe from some things I read that made it seem like they expected her to come out and it was "weird" or "strange" that she didn't. It's an interesting topic but I didn't understand why it was even something that needed to be brought up in the reviews/articles.
I'm surprised that even came to mind for anyone while all of the marriages and performing was happening. I actually think it'd be awkward if she slipped it in there mid speech. "And btw guys I'm gay too"
Well yeah Kendrick Lamar should have won best hip hop album.
But I admit Macklemore is OK in my book. No he's not the most talented MC on the planet, but he's passionate about what he does, and wrote a handful of catchy songs that resonated with people. And for me the live show was a lot of fun.
and of course he wrote Same Love. Sure its kind of a clunky song, but the words are heartfelt, and it will stand as a pop song that reflected exactly how a vast majority of young people felt about gay rights during the time of its release.
all I wanna know is why the hell was dave grohl drumming for nin and queens when ilan and john theodore were standing right there and are both better drummers than dave will ever be. I love ya dave but sit a few plays out damn
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
I have to agree with most of that article about white people. Far too many white people won awards they didn't deserve. Kendrick destroys Macklemore. It's not even a contest. I enjoyed RAM, but GKMC is so much better. And I'll go ahead and say it, I don't really like "Get Lucky" that much and never have
Macklemore was the only "white person who won an award they didn't deserve." GKMC just didn't have the commercial appeal to win AOTY. Plus, even if you try to argue that RAM wasn't at least "deserving" of a Grammy (which would be crazy), when it eventually did win a Grammy, lots of black people who were critical to the success of the album were recognized and took home a trophy too.
Now as to whether some of the performances were lame and uninteresting, that's another matter.
I don't think this is a racial issue. It is an issue of someone voting for best rap album who hasn't even listened to all 5 albums. I shouldn't vote for best rap album. I would have no idea what I'm voting on. I certainly have heard Macklemore more than the other 4 artists in the last 6 months though. Just like most of the people here have no right voting on best Americana album (FTR I would probably not vote in protest of "Southeastern" not being nominated if I had a vote
All that said what difference does it make? Who the fuck cares about the Grammys? Would it somehow legitimize GKMC in a way that it hasn't been already?

After the Grammys, Macklemore posted a text message he sent Lamar, in which he said that Lamar deserved the Best Rap Album award. "You got robbed. I wanted you to win," he wrote. Now, Lamar himself has responded to Macklemore's string of wins.
Speaking to XXL, Lamar said: It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man... He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go.
XXL also asked Lamar for his opinion on the Grammys' treatment of hip-hop broadly, and whether it is undervalued: I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre.. We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions. Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.

My OCD side came out and kept forcing me to add "are" to the "We part of the world" and "We part of the movement" lines.
Either way good on him. He definitely seems to have his head on straight and with his talent and endorsement he'll probably be a mainstay of rap (if he wants) for years to come.
Macklemore was the only "white person who won an award they didn't deserve."
Imagine Dragons are white and didn't deserve to win Best Rock Performance. Or did they? I've never actually heard the song.
Yeah what I meant to say is that a lot of white people won when they shouldn't have in general. Like every category just about except for whatever award Vampire Weekend won. They deserved it. I assume it was Best Alternative Rock Album. I know I can just look it up, but I'm too far into this post to start researching now!
i am watching some videos from the grammys since i wasn't able to watch them (and forgot to record them while i was out). wtf is madonna wearing?? is there just like a point in time where you become such a big star you wear whatever the fuck you want even if you look totally ridiculous? why do people perpetuate this shit.
