I think the addition of John Mayer is a little weird, but I love his playing so hopefully I'll be able to snag tickets to one of their shows.
this excites me. I think mayer is actually a pretty good choice. He definitely has the chops. plus his blues rock style is more in line with a lot of the dead's stuff than trey's more jazzy style. Plus I really think John Mayer is much better singer and could pull off some of the vocal harmonies better than Trey.

Would Phil really agree to this? Seems like he is the most adamant about not touring. Mayer's vocal would be the only concern for me. I wouldn't want to listen to him slur and mumble through Jerry's songs. I'm probably just still basing this off of Your Body Is A Wonderland days. I heard a song from one of his last two albums on the radio a couple of years ago and liked the sound.
Also, weren't John and Bobby spotted together at someone's set at Coachella?

yeah, I was under the impression Phil just wanted to keep playing his terrapin crossroads sets and not go on a tour. Bobby doesn't seem like he ever wants to quit, and Bill kreutzman and Mickey Hart are playing some fests (and just did a set with the disco biscuit at red rocks). I don't see why they wouldn't keep that money train rolling.
if you watch some of mayer's live stuff on youtube, his vocals aren't those whispery panty dropping pop stuff.
Personally, I really liked when Ryan Adams played/sang with Phil and Friends. I thought he was probably the best "jerry" vocalist.

So much for "Only playing these three shows".
I will definitely be trying to catch Grateful Dead with John Mayer. That's a great choice.
The Grateful Dead reunion shows, five in total scheduled for June 27 and 28 in Santa Clara, Calif. and July 4-6 in Chicago, look to have a potential haul of $50 million just in ticket sales, according to Billboard's estimates, and could have sold six million more seats, judging by demand. The staggering payday naturally leads to an even bigger question: will the "Core Four" surviving members of the Dead -- Bob Weir, 67; Phil Lesh, 75; Mickey Hart, 71; and Bill Kreutzmann, 68 -- take the show on the road, or will the Fare Thee Well concerts truly bid farewell?
Speaking to multiple sources, Billboard has learned that a fall tour featuring John Mayer is in the works. According to insiders, the trek is due to kick off in October, with the Grammy-winning singer and guitarist having already begun to jam in a rehearsal-like setting with select members of the group, chief among them Weir. Observers say he's ecstatic about the prospect. A rep for the band tells Billboard that it's "premature" to suggest any such outing is being planned.
Certainly, the 37-year-old Mayer would have his work cut out for him. The Dead's arsenal contains hundreds of songs and many more free-form solos, led traditionally by guitarist Jerry Garcia, who died in 1995. It's also unclear how Deadheads, the most devoted of the band's fans, would react to the lineup. Sniffs one insider: "It sounds like Ratdog, the sequel," referring to Weir's longtime side-project.
For their part, the core four insist that Chicago, which marks the 20th anniversary of the band's last stand with Garcia and will feature guest turns by Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) and Bruce Hornsby (piano), will be their final bow... as the Grateful Dead.
They tell us "Rock'n'roll is the devil's music." Well, let's say we know that rock is the devil's music, and we know that it is, for sure … At least he fuckin' jams! If it's a choice between eternal Hell and good tunes, and eternal Heaven and New Kids on the fuckin' Block … I'm gonna be surfin' on the lake of fire, rockin' out.
So I'll be at all three Chicago shows. Have room booked at the Hard Rock Hotel, and am looking for roomies. Room was just under $1500 for arrival on 7/3 and checkout on 7/6. I may already have two roomies from here (not 100% confirmed). If it looks like I may have no one to split the cost of the room, I'd be down to take some floor space from anyone on here (I'd gladly pay my share).

I have extras too. Anyone needs some, hit me up.
As the result of a royal debacle of epic proportions involving Ticketmaster, I am stuck with 2 Santa Clara tickets for Saturday....had a buyer lined up via cashortrade.org, but I JUST GOT THE TICKETS TODAY so buyer was getting cold feet and wanted a refund.
These are 59.50 tickets and I would have to priority mail them to someone and really at this point just not wanting to have to take a total loss....plus hate to see 2 Dead tickets go unused.
When the tickets went on sale I thought I had a good chance of making this happen, but since then have had some issues come up that are necessitating my helping out my mother financially, not to mention my recent move that was a total cluster and cost way more than expected. Just not good luck lately. t Anyway, I will advertise again on cashortrade but if any of you know anyone let me know by Thursday. I can do Paypal, and at this point I know that I will have to take a hit somewhat.

Argh so many extras, and SO far across the country I may have to resort to Pay Per View

Some quick takes on this weekend's shows.
1. It was apparent, especially during the 1st show, that they're a bit rusty. People didn't always know whose turn it was to sing/play. The drummers seemed to get out of synch. Nothing too surprising. 2. The popular songs were treated by the crowds as sing-alongs. 3. Phil has a right to sing. I just wish he didn't exercise that right as often. 4. Lots and lots of Bobby. I started wondering if he wanted Trey there because, if it were Kadlicek, Bobby wouldn't be singing the Jerry songs. 5. Not enough Trey or Jeff, especially the 1st night. 6. The video screens were amazing for the visual effects. The shots of the musicians could have been done better. They switched it every 5 seconds or so. And they kept showing Bruce when Jeff was playing and vice versa. 7. NFL stadium-level security was a shock to a lot of those attending. This is despite multiple e-mails about what you could and couldn't bring in. 8. I enjoyed myself a lot. But this was still a big rip-off. They didn't block off any seats. There were some where your view of the stage was completely blocked. I've seen better shows at Terrapin Crossroads and other venues for a fraction of the money and inconvenience. 9. The appearance of a rainbow on Saturday behind and to the left of the stage was spectacular. Magical.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the shows billypilgrim! I didn't get to watch either show this weekend but was wondering how it went. Hopefully they get the kinks worked out for next weekend. I really wish they would have done a few more shows. Oh well.
