If he doesn't sign with the Habs, this will be terrible. Collberg is going to be lightening in a bottle. For now, I'm just thinking how good of a move it is to replace Brian Gionta with Thomas Vanek, which essentially is what will happen if they are able to sign him. I like it now, and we'll revisit this in the summer.
BOY DID THE RAMGERS EVER GET RAPED IN THAT DEAL, EH Flanz. Usually when a player demands a trade, and specifies which team he'd like to be traded to, you don't give up an arm and a leg...

I'm sure Vanek will want to explore free agency. Sabres had a good week of trading. The Halak trade is a little puzzling, but oh well.
At first, I was pretty upset with the Cally trade. But then I took a step back and looked at it.
First, the deal as currently constructed:
Cally, 2015 1st rounder and 2014 2nd rounder for St. Louis.
The deal becomes 2014/2015 1st rounders if the Rangers make the conference finals.
The deal sends Tampa's 2015 2nd rounder in exchange for the Rangers' 2015 7th rounder if Cally re-signs with Tampa.
So, the worst possible deal is Cally and two 1's for St. Louis. The best deal is Cally, a 1st, a 2nd and a 7th for St. Louis and a 2nd.
Cally is great, been my favorite player on the team (sans Henrik, obviously) for years. I always appreciated how he played the game like he was 6'5" and never put himself above the team (playing his ass off even with the trade rumors and extension negotiations). But, let's call a spade a spade. He's an effort player who has never scored 30 goals (he had 29 one year) and has a career high of 54 points.
St. Louis has more than 54 points this season, and has scored more than 54 points every year since '01-'02. Is he old? Yes. Is he tiny? Oh my god yes (he was dwarfed by Marv Albert's son, Kenny, who works for the MSG network, when they did an interview earlier. But is he going to make this team better? I say yes. If he plays out his contract and the team gets another couple seasons out of him? The trade's probably worth it. I reserve the right to change this if that draft pick turns into a stud, but...I get why they did it. They've had guys walk and perform elsewhere before and didn't want to get burned here. Callahan wanted an eight year $7.5 million per contract and only came down close to the $6 million per deal the Rangers wanted yesterday, when the trade was already in full motion and they weren't going back.
I love Cally, I will always love that dude, but I think this makes the Rangers a tougher out in the playoffs, so we'll see.

in the interest of this season alone, this is a good deal for the Rangers. The fact that it was going to be very difficult to re-sign Cally makes it easier to swallow. But St. Louis is 38. He's got 3 seasons max, and that's a little unrealistic IMO. Bottom line, is Rangers over paid. They are a better team right now, but in the long term, it's a bad deal.
That said, they'll be fine. Draft picks don't always turn out NHL players anyway. Even 1st rounders.
If they get three years out of Marty and get that 2nd rounder back from Tampa it's a lot easier to swallow. I'm not thrilled about it, but I think they're hoping Henrik/Nash/Marty is a good enough top-3 to get it done. They're planning to play him with Richards, which could either make Richards useful again, or make Marty suck. Can't wait!
Pretty good as far as I'm concerned! Considering their own picks will easly be top 3, and next year they'll be in for the McDavid Sweepstakes. The Buffalo Sabers are going to be a dangerous team.... In about 6 years.
