Keep an eye out for Talisker 10 year, and give The Glen Levit a shot. I'm a big fan of Islay's myself, I find generally they're smokiest, and I'm just really into that.
Im not a scotch drinker, but when it comes to bourbon I generally buy Elmer t. Lee, Woodford reserve, eagle rare, and bulliet. Those are pretty good for their price range. Eagle rare 17 is excellent.
Tomorrow im floating down a river in an inner tube and bringing the finest cheap bourbon there is, evan williams. It's definitely a cheap whiskey, but its the best, by far, cheap whiskey.

I remember having a glass of some scotch 1-2 years ago that was supposed to be very good but it was waaaaaay too smokey. I don't remember the name. But definitely don't think I'm into the smokey stuff.

id guess it was Laphoraig, possibly Lagavoulin, but since you wernt into it, I'll go ahead and assume it was not Lagavoulin, cuz if you didn't like it, you wouldn't be allowed to post in this thread anymore.
One game into the season, and the new bottle of celebratory Scotch is still sealed. Based on what I observed last night, it may stay that way until 2015. *sigh* Go Deacs?

The best cheap whiskey, IMO, is Ol Grandad.
I'm also a Bulliet man for my usual go to. It's easy to find and reasonably priced. I also highly recommend 1792. It beat Pappy Van Winkle in a blind taste test, and it's a fraction of the price. I find Buffalo Trace and Makers to be way too smooth/tasteless. Knob Creek is 100 proof and is great to have around for cocktails.
If you want to fall down a giant rabbit hole, start drinking Rye. It isn't quite as popular/expensive as bourbon, and there's a great range of flavors. My favorite is Copper Fox, but that's local to Virginia I think. Templeton, Catoctin Creek and James Oliver are also real nice.

I never encountered old grandad 'til id moved beyond that price point. And it's great. But I loved on evan williams so long its just the go to.
