The last few posts all remind me of my experience with the Indian album last month. #DifferentStrokes
With steep praise comes the inevitable internet backlash. Then a backlash to the backlash. Was bound to happen at some point. That Indian album scared the shit out of me. Which I guess makes it awesome to a certain extent. I just pictured Gollum being really pissed and yelling maniacal shit into a mic with really loud guitars and percussion backing him.
The Sun Kil Moon album also scared the shit out of me, but for different reasons. Guess I'm just a pansy getting scared at everything nowadays. I personally loved every moment that album.

I spent January in a bit of a fugue state, so this'll come in handy.
Anything that got no firsts but a lot of HMs that I should also listen to?
I just tried it out for the first time and couldn't even get through the first song.
I made it through almost 3 songs.
FWIW, I put it on for my gf to hear during our 5 hour drive today. She loves his voice and lyrical stylings, but found it way too sad for a road song leading into our weekend getaway. This album really is one you need to be in a certain mind frame to listen to. Suprisingly, Becks new album went real well on the road(as long as you have a big cup of coffee beside you)

Agreed wholeheartedly. It's a headphones while being alone after downing half a bottle of whatever you got record.

. After my honeymoon phase is over with it, it's legit going to be my go to "I just want to think about my life and cry" record.
Keep the Sun Kil Moon dislike coming. It further convinces me that it's brilliant.
One of my best friends has been listening to it multiple times a day and loves it. He's also a pitchfork disciple. I'm not.
Reading the review after the fact, I'm shocked it got a 9.2. And the review itself is a steaming pile of shit writing. Dude wrote a dissertation-length opinion justifying Benji's melancholy. If the album doesn't make you want to kill yourself, that review will.

Sorry, I had to quit. I started crying uncontrollably, ate a pint of Ben & Jerry's Brownie Chew Gooder, visited my pets grave in the back yard, reread the diary of Anne Frank, finished off the left overs in my liquor cabinet, and pulled out the high school year books.
And that was all to feel better after listening to this.

Thank you for this useful commentary on Sun Kil Moon.
I was just trying to point out that even my close friends, who I share a lot with in terms of music interest, like the album. But I think a lot of it has to do with it's high rank on pitchfork. If it got a 7.2 people wouldn't make such a big fuss IMO.

Got it, people who spend inordinate amounts of time on music message boards are unable to formulate their own opinions on what albums they like.
I can't wait until you try to tell me the only reason I like the Angel Olsen album because Pitchfork have it a 9.5.

That's only half the reason. She's also a total slampiece.
I'm not saying that's the only reason people like the album. (And I'm not even sayin the album has no value or that it sucks- it's still better than most stuff I've heard the last 6 weeks). But I definitely think there is some bias associated when you first read a glowing review before listening to the album. I never studied psychology but it seems intuitive to me.

So your saying releasing a critically acclaimed album will attract listeners? Interesting.
