If the whole clue revolves around football the 49ers won several games going into the playoff....three more wins (a win is friendly?) and they hoist the super bowl trophy
too easy, but ther eis that line of thought
Maybe I'm being too literal, but there's no "cup" for football. If anything, I think the cup is pointing to soccer or hockey. I actually think the sports references are too obvious to be the intended meaning

The goldpanner thing has to be a reference to some ol' timey American stuff.
Not necessarily. There was an enormous gold rush here in the late 19th century, and Bendigo, VIC (near Melbourne) was once the richest city in the world because of it. Plus Melbourne's music scene easily rivals Austin's (more venues per capita, anyway). Hmm... Cut Copy? Nick Cave? Not saying it's the answer, just throwing out ideas.
Ol' timey American stuff seems to be the obvious answer, but they never go for the obvious (at least on the first clue).
Definitely a possibility. Plus, for anybody that flips through TV channels these days, there are big pushes for gold mining in Canada and South America right now. So not necessarily a reference to the past.

Oh man, Nick Cave is a great guess (caves being shady and all), plus we already know he'll be there.

Moved from the wrong thread to here...
Probably stretching it but since I keep thinking the front end of this clue is tied to old mining equipment I started there. Its dark in the shade of the mountains so to keep the gold panning going in darkness or shade, miners would use gas lights or gas lamps. Obviously I then think Gaslight Anthem and in order for that to work, I would have to find a way to get anthem out of the rest. The Olympics are coming, NFL playoffs are in full swing but hockey is the only sport I can think that actually has a "cup" to hoist. In any event, a national anthem would be played upon a medal being won and that can also be construed as a "friendly score" in the musical sense. There is probably a better way to attach anthem to the rest but since it has some relative logic to it and far more solid logic on the front end with the gas light or gas lamp, Im going to make my first completely wrong and uneducated guess to be Gaslight Anthem. Im not a big fan or not of them so not trying to find a way to make them work.
Just thinking aloud, but a score can also refer to a group or set of twenty.
This is the only post in this thread so far that really makes any sense. When taken in context with the "just three more" part, I think that implies something to do with the number 17.

Here is another bad guess to go with my Gaslight Anthem...
Looked at which teams were remaining in the NFL since they all would need three more games with a friendly score for them to hoist the cup (I still hate that part since it doesnt make sense for the NFL). Thinking of team names in relation to bands I stopped at Carolina. Carolina Chocolate Drops. The sugar and contents of chocolate would keep the gold panner up and at some point the idea of gold chocolate coins came about but I am not about to google a connection. So, Carolina Chocolate Drops. On second though, that just makes Gaslight Anthem look much better to me.
The second half of this clue makes me think that the artist in reference is young - just three more could mean three more years, and then they can "hoist the cup", which might refer to being of legal drinking age?

Roo Clue #1: These were made, in the shade, to keep the gold panner up. Just three more, a friendly score, and they can hoist the cup.
Something was made while in the shade - Its hot out so the panners are cooling off in the shade. I dont think one would escape heat in the shade to drink hot coffee. Nor am I saying they are making redbull or PBR.
Just three more of these somethings and the panners can either A)Win a trophy or B) Cheers to their newly acquired brew in a cup.
Score = 20 years (Abe Lincoln) So 3 more years to equal 20 or 3 more 20 year periods.
After said time period, the panners will complete their task of "raising the cup"
They and These leads me to a band and not a vocalist or solo artist.
