Owsley Brothers. Tonight. They absolutely destroyed it. This band is set to explode. Roo needs to book them. They covered King Kong by Zappa and tore it the fuck apart. I know I probably come across as a hipster with some inside dish but I'm certain you will know there name by the end of 2015.

MMJ(3 sets were all great) - One Big Holiday, Mexico The Flaming Lips - One Big Holiday, Mexico Jack White - Bonnaroo The Allman Brothers Band - Lock'n fest Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Lock'n fest Outkast - Summerfest WSP with Steve Winwood - Lock'n fest The Flaming Lips - Bonnaroo The Avett Brothers - Bonnaroo Wilco(2 great sets) - Lock'n fest Lionel Richie - Bonnaroo Andrew Bird and the hands of Glory - the Chicago Theatre
1 Darkside - Bonnaroo 2 Jungle - Atlanta Terminal West 3 Ty Segall - Bonnaroo 4 Caribou - New Orleans One Eyed Jack's 5 Jack White - Bonnaroo 6 Of Montreal - Atlanta Terminal West 7 Deerhunter/Black Lips - Atlanta Variety Playhouse 8 Arcade Fire - Atlanta Lakewood Ampitheatre
9 Cloud Nothings - Bonnaroo 10 Outkast - Counterpoint & Atlanta Centennial Olympic Park HM Nick Cave - Bonnaroo (Jack White ran late, so I only caught the last 4-5 songs, but what I saw was incredible. Should be top 5.)
Other Highlights:
Bonnaroo - Elton John, Arctic Monkeys, Neutral Milk Hotel, Cut Copy, Mastodon, Dakhabrakha, Goat, Seun Kuti, Omar Souleyman, King Khan & the Shrines, Diarrhea Planet, The Orwells
Counterpoint Sunday - Yacht, Run the Jewels, Phantogram, Major Lazer
Atlanta - Eagulls, Cloud Nothings, Yyvette, War on Drugs, Ty Segall, Power Trip, Flying Lotus, Screaming Females, Curtis Harding, Black Lips/King Khan & BBQ Show/Curtis Harding, Meatbodies/Purling Hiss, King Tuff, Bradford Cox, Pallbearer/Tombs, Protomartyr, MGMT/Girl Talk/Joy Formidable, Spoon
Out of Town Shows - Darkside - Chicago, Cheap Time - Chicago, Man Man - Indianapolis
Notes:
It was a fairly good concert year, but due to traveling a bunch for work, I missed out on a lot of stuff I wanted to see. Looking ahead, I will probably continue to work out of town a lot of the time, away from Atlanta, so my best concert years are most likely behind me.
The two times I saw Outkast where my favorite overall days with my wife and friends.
Jungle was the biggest surprise of the year. I went into it not expecting much and they completely blew me away.
I actually had tickets for Thee Silver Mt. Zion, The Knife, Television, and The Men and was not able to make it.
I saw a bunch of really shitty openers this year, such as Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, Thundercat, etc.
There's a good amount of garage/punk/psych bands that I don't even remember the names of. Pujol always seems to be around and I can't stand that guy.
I was a little disappointed by Goat at Bonnaroo. They were 10x better when I saw them last year. I think they may have been tired or something.
It was on awesome experience to see Neutral Milk Hotel in a rowdy, fun, festival environment with beach balls, blowup whales, and totems jumping up and down. It didn't have the same emotional impact of when I saw them last year, but I never pictured a NMH show to be as crazy fun as it was at Roo.
I'm bummed I never got a chance to see Thee Oh Sees or Liars this year.

Thought it was a pretty weak year for albums and festivals, but I did see a ton of great shows.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few good ones from earlier in the year, but I'm just going to blame that on the buzz I got going right now.
1. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band- Bridgestone Arena 2. Elton John- Bonnaroo 3. Flaming Lips- Bonnaroo 4. Beats Antique- Marathon Music Works 5. Sabaton/Amon Amarth/Skeletonwitch- Iron City Birmingham 6. Humming People- Americanafest 7. St. Paul & the Broken Bones- Marathon Music Works 8. Skinny Lister- Bonnaroo 9. Todd Snider and Friends- Americanafest 10. Lionel Richie- Bonnaroo
Hands down, without question, my favourite year for live music yet. I know I said that last year, and maybe the year before, but I really think this one is untoppable.
1. The Rolling Stones, Hope Estate, Pokolbin NSW, November 15th
The Stones on a lush vinyard in the Hunter Valley? Pinch me. Best concert I've ever seen.
2. The National, Sydney Opera House (Forecourt), February 7th
Magical late summer's eve on the Opera House stairs, underneath the Harbour Bridge and the Botanical Gardens... it was every bit as blissful as it sounds.
3. Nick Cave, State Theatre, December 13th
Many people think this trumps the SOH for most beautiful venue in the city; I don't entirely disagree. This was a rare "solo" show, which really just meant a stripped-down version of the Bad Seeds.
4. Heritage Orchestra: Music of Moroder (feat. Giorgio Moroder, Anna Calvi, Shingai Shoniwa, & Liela Moss), Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), June 1st
For the second year running, Heritage Orchestra has landed on my top shows list. I tried to explain to people last year that this was not your typical orchestra; perhaps the inclusion of Giorgio bloody Moroder himself will change your mind. They even closed it out with a cover of Giorgio by Moroder, beating Daft Punk to the punch.
5. Movement, Spectrum, May 30th
These boys are too damn smooth for their own good. I was so close to the stage, the bass nearly slappa da me (seriously).
6. Darkside, The Hi-Fi, April 2nd
If you never saw them, you missed out on something really special; if you did see them, then I won't need to explain this much more. Dark, dirty, gritty, grimy, brittle, brutal, jagged, jaded, hypnotic, erotic, trance-inducing, dance-inducing mania.
7. Pearl Jam, Big Day Out, Sydney Olympic Park, January 26th
Tops Bonnaroo '08 for me. I was in about the third or fourth row, right in front of Mike McCready. Eddie was so drunk on life. Life, and lots of alcohol.
8. The Preatures, The Hi-Fi, December 5th
I saw them several times this year, but this was the best of the lot. I had chatted with them the previous day during an in-store acoustic set & meet-and-greet; Izzi recognised me in the crowd, put her face in mine and serenaded me with Ordinary. Life = made.
9. Glen Hansard, Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), March 20th
I had also seen him on St. Patrick's Day, but this tops it - St. Paddy's was too much a joyous celebration for such forlorn songs, and I was in the back. This time was more sombre; I was front row sidestage, facing his piano. At times it felt like he was playing to me alone.
10. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Oxford Art Factory, December 11th
One of the craziest crowds I have ever been a part of. I made the questionable decision of staking out a front-row spot when I know I am getting too old for moshpits... dear, oh dear.
11. Damon Albarn (feat. De La Soul, Remi, & SOH String Quartet), Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), December 16th (early show)
12. Pixies, Sydney Opera House (Concert Hall), May 23rd
13. Erykah Badu, The Star Event Centre, April 17th
14. Nils Frahm, Sydney Opera House (Studio), October 12th (early show)
I've never seen anyone play quite like that.
15. Arcade Fire, Big Day Out, Sydney Olympic Park, January 26th
16. Mos Def, Enmore Theatre, October 20th
17. Art Vs Science, Oxford Art Factory, April 10th
18. Tame Impala, Big Day Out, Sydney Olympic Park, January 26th
19. Dave Chappelle, State Theatre, March 5th (late show)
The best comedy show I have ever seen. It didn't feel pre-rehearsed or put on; it was just Dave shooting the shit with you for a couple hours - about current events, observations on Australia, thoughts on life, work, fame. I have never laughed that hard for that long.
20. Cirque du Soleil, Entertainment Quarter, December 31st
Shows: 1. Slint - The Ottobar Baltimore, MD 5/2 2. The Body - Strange Matter/RVA 3/17 3. Ulcerate/Inter Arma - Strange Matter/RVA 5/20 4. Roomrunner - Strange Matter/RVA 2/27 5. Deafheaven/Pallbearer - Canal Club/RVA 6/11 10. Nik Turners Hawkwind/Witch Mountian - Strange Matter/RVA 9/7
Festival Sets: 1. Jagwar Ma (Coachella) 2. Television (Big Ears) 3. Grimes (P4K) 4. Little Black Egg Band (Yo La Tengo w/ Steve Gunn & William Tyler) (Hopscotch) 5. Bachman-Bowles Duo (Hopscotch) 6. Kelela (P4K) 7. Earth (Big Ears) 8. Ty Segall (Coachella) 9. Banks (Coachella) 10. Perfect Pussy (P4K)

The whole Three-Lobed Recordings/WXDU Day Show was pretty great. I'm envious of some of these shows, namely Kelela, The Body, and Pallbearer.
I lucked out and saw Thou + The Body do a collaborative performance over the summer, too. That Body show tho. Gotdamn. I'm hoping that with a new Kelela album coming, she'll be everywhere this year.

Probably the best year of live music I've ever had. It was hard to make a list so here's the cream of the crop in chronological order:
Spiritualized (Ace Theater, Los Angeles February 14, 2014) Future Islands (Gobi, Coachella April 12, 2014) Solange (Gobi, Coachella April 12, 2014) Beck (Coachella Stage, Coachella April 13, 2014) Trust (Soda Bar, San Diego April 24, 2014) Kanye West (What Stage (pit), Bonnaroo Friday) James Blake (That Tent, Bonnaroo saturday) Flying Lotus (Casbah, San Diego July 25, 2014) Beyonce & Jay-Z (Rose Bowl, Pasadena August 2, 2014) Jagwar Ma (Casbah, San Diego August 6, 2014) Little Dragon (FYF Fest August 23, 2014) Run the Jewels (FYF Fest August 23, 2014) Caribou (FYF Fest August 23, 2014) Grimes (FYF Fest August 23, 2014) Darkside (FYF Fest August 24, 2014) John Talabot (FYF Fest August 24, 2014) Jamie XX (FYF Fest August 24, 2014) The Breeders (The Casbah September 17, 2014) Andy Stott (The Masonic Lodge, Hollywood Forever Cemetery September 27, 2014) Cut Copy (Birch North Park Theatre October 31, 2014)
Hands down my favorite was Pokey LeFarge's Central Time tour. We saw two nights in a row. We went to Chicago for my birthday and saw them at The Old Town School of Folk music and had a table that was practically on the stage.
Then when we were chatting with all the artists after and when they found out it was my birthday they invited us up to their show the next night at the Stoughton Opera House in Wisconsin. How do you say no to that so we changed all our plans and went and saw them a 2nd night and they gave us free seats in 4th row. The venue was amazing and the closing number with everyone was Let's Go Get Stoned (check out my video below - so good!)
It was just an amazing whirlwind of a weekend and I felt like we were part of something really special and all the artists were so nice and really made it a weekend to remember. They even made sure all 28 of them signed the tour poster for me.

I'll never forget it.
I saw Pokey at Newport Folk Festival last summer. I went in pretty "meh" on him, but one of my friends really wanted to see him so I went with them. He totally blew me away and ending up being one of my favorite new discoveries I made at the festival.
That's so good to hear! He really is something else, I can't say enough good things about him. If you get the chance go see him when he's out touring at his usual smaller places.

1.) Jack White // Bonnaroo (What else) 2.) Jack White // Forecastle (SERIOUSLY, WHAT ELSE?!?!?!) 3.) Cage the Elephant (opened for Black Keys but Auerbach & Co. were VERY meh) // Louisville, Yum Center 4.) Neutral Milk Hotel // Indianapolis, Egyptian Room @ Old National Centre 5.) Vampire Weekend (in my opinion, the most underrated set of the weekend) // Guess where?
