And this Cheeto/chip conversation has me stuck, although if I compare it to the hamburger not-a-sandwich conversation and use my own logic (but reversed):
I understand the definition of a sandwich, and I can see how a hamburger fits the generic definition, but I think modern usage and understanding of the terms hamburgers and sandwiches helps us look past the conventional definition of a sandwich. A hamburger is not a sandwich.
At first, I didn't think a cheeto was a chip- it's not a small, thin slice of anything- but I do agree that it is found with the chips and if you were to crave a chip, I do believe one could succumb to the craving and kick it by picking up a bag of Cheetos. Perhaps I need to take a page out of my own book and say it is a chip.
A person craving a sandwich would not order a hamburger. A person craving a chip could buy some Cheetos.
I wrote this less than an hour ago, but I keep going back and forth... my gut says no. But I feel like I should say yes.
EDIT: I went with no for now, but that might change.

no no no. I went and looked last night. (and by that I mean I was already at said places and decided to look. I'm not *that* lame)
but even if they are in the same aisle, there is always a vertical divide in the shelves between where the tortilla chips/doritos/cheetos are, followed by popcorn/pretzels whatever to the side in the next section.
there would never be doritos on one shelf with chex mix below them. but there certainly would be cheetos underneath the doritos.

But were the cheetos next to the popcorn? Because maybe that "divide" actually starts with the cheetos, not ends with them.

A french fry is DEFINITELY not a chip. I think we can all agree on that. Merriam-Webster can go suck it.

If you were across the pond it would be. Fair game. Different game from what we're discussing.

Who cares? Cheetos are horrible. I did used to enjoy a bag of the Flaming Hots with a cold Dr. Pepper, but not in the last four or five years. I stick to tortilla chips with lots of salsa now. Seriously, I should just order salsa as a drink at Mexican restaurants.
Stay away from the Flaming Hots if you have kiddos. I saw this article just yesterday.

The British would disagree with you. I'm not sure where I fall on that issue.
