In case y'all have no idea what is going on in New Orleans (and because I need to vent yet again about my fucked up city), we had severe flooding on Saturday last week. Like hip deep water in some areas. The Sewage & Water Board tried to lie and say that ALL the pumps were working correctly and that it is a combination of climate change and 9" of water in 2 hours time that caused the issue, but besides the fact that areas in the city that NEVER had flooded before flooded I knew that was all bullshit.
It is now slowly coming out that 16 pumps were not working (the number has been increasing by the day on the amount of non-working pumps), last night there was a fire that destroyed the turbines that power all the pumping stations on the eastbank and the city officially has no way to pump out rainfall that will occur. It is still raining here. The governor declared a state of emergency, which I found out about not through the news or press conferences on the rains/pumping stations but through weather.com.
The city also has broken/clogged catch basins, which they have been aware about for long enough that last year they put $13.1 million on the side for the city to fix/unclog these basins. Stacy Head who is in charge of the city counsel went off about the fact that they never started clearing those out. My girl (teammate/bonnaroo camping buddy) went out today to clear out 4 basins. She only successful was able to clear out 3 because of how bad the last one was. She lost her car in the floods while it was parked in her front yard on Saturday and she is concerned about further flooding.
I guess this could have gone in the GRRRRRRRR thread (or however many R's is in that title) but since it was weather related I figured here was more appropriate.
Yeah, everyone on my floor left Benson at lunch yesterday to avoid potential flooding, but obviously nothing happened. But I am worried about this weekend. I live in Mid City, so if we get another downpour, my neighborhood is toast. I've been staying with my girlfriend Uptown for the past few weekends, so I didn't catch how bad things were on Saturday. I think my car might've gotten water had I been home instead of her house. I'll be at her house again all weekend, so I should hopefully be okay. My car is an Altima, so it's only like six inches off the ground at best.
I also hope I don't get wet at Red Dress Run tomorrow.

thejeremy was working at the Saenger when the flooding occurred, he got water inside his car but not in the engine. . Unfortunately, the laptop we were going to give Kyle for college was on the floor in the backseat. So we now have to use the leftover parent plus loan money in order to buy him a new one. If it was my Honda Fit, it probably would have been totaled. I want the 2018 but that is now quite how I want to get one.
The Saenger had water running down the walls into the basement. I have never seen the Quarter take on so much water before in my life
You will get wet tomorrow if it rains like they are predicting (second year in a row I am missing, I am sad).
They said that the turbine is fixed and they ran tests that showed it being fine but that system is from like 1910. It caught fire not even running. Fingers crossed we make it through this hurricane season. I can't wait to get a new mayor, too bad our candidates all suck.
Just getting word that we may get wet this weekend. I know it's too far out, but this stuff always makes me anxious.
I think NOLA is going to be on the wet side of the storm. Lord knows we do not need any more rain or that our pumps (the ones that do work) can handle it. Houston looks more likely to be close to where it MAY land. Don't forget to make sure that you are storm ready, that always helps with my anxiety when it comes to these things.
I fucking hate hurricane predictions since hurricanes are so unpredictable. I mean look at that shit.

My favorite one is the green line that makes the loop, it's almost like a two year old made it.
Legitimately, I am worried about this one. But I'm always worried about every one. We just moved to Galveston, about a block away from the hospital complex. I'll go shop for the necessary stuff tonight and bring my ice chest into town with me tomorrow to fill it. Looking forward to the next couple of sleepless nights.

The green line has happened in the past, which is scary. Or my favorite, the ones that hit land, bounce out into the gulf again, built back up and then hit land again. Usually those are soakers and just sit dumping water. Fucking hate that shit. I was actually just listening to the mayor and governor tell us that we need to prepare for water and that the pumps are better than they were and everyday getting better (ummm sure they are) oh and don't go off categories because a tropical depression can fuck us all up. I don't know why I listen to those morons, they just make my anxiety worse.
So to make some sort of point. They are always scarier in theory than in actuality. This will not be a Katrina storm or even worthy of thinking about evacuating. There could be rain, flooding and you may lose power, BUT you are in a city that is prepared for hurricanes and as long as you are prepared you will be fine. I don't think this will do more than dump a bunch of water and remember this...you might get lucky and be on the left side of the storm.

yeah, pretty certain that was the one that ruined houston pretty good. The curly q one is what this one's looking like atm only around San Antonio.

The thing that makes these things so scary is the unpredictability of them. We won't really know where the storm will land, how much water it will dump or if we should actually be worried until 24 hrs before landfall. Which SUCKS! Just keep watching the weather, be prepared for the worse and make sure your car is on high land.

This conversation about hurricanes makes me wish I had cable just for the weather updates. I hardly ever get the severe weather alerts on my phone and apparently there's some strong storms moving through the area right now.

also, if youve got a tv. Invest in a solid digital OTA antenna. Youd be surprised how much you can get over the air, especially in a major metropolitan area.

where you at?
Im in Upstate NY. Albany area. We had some tornado watches & warnings all day but it looks like those storms stayed north.

thejeremy hooked me up with a live stream weather channel. We don't have cable either and you input your location and it gives you a stream for that area (I will find out the name so you can add it to your appleTV/FireStick/Roku/or whatever else you watch your shows on. The nice thing about it, I can watch the weather for anywhere! It is one of my favorites.
Hoping for the best for everyone in Texas and Louisiana. Looks like a ton of rain is headed your way the next few days, particularly Texas. Even farther away in NOLA, the forecast is saying over four inches of rain over the next week.

That is the last thing that we need here. Stupid broken pumping stations and catch basins. This city is going to drown.

Already decided me, my girlfriend, and my dog are all goners. Its been nice knowing ya inforoo.
I actually just saw the hurricane advisories and was coming to see how you are handling it. Are y'all getting rain yet? It is very overcast but not rainy as of yet. This storm won't get strong enough to make you a goner...just maybe your car.

Neighbor that's been here since '00 said we'd be fine. We'll lose power for a while, but hopefully no flooding. I really, really hope we don't flood. But I keep telling myself it's just stuff.
I got 3 cases of beer, four cases of water, and enough canned goods to last a while. We're more than likely just gonna bail out to Alexandria tonight or early tomorrow though. I want to ride it out, but if anything happens to the GF or dog because I'm hard headed I don't think I'd get over it. Plus those two wouldnt do well in a shelter if it came to that. Better safe than sorry and we've got family to stay with anyway.
yeah we're probably getting dumped on. im 99% sure ill be flooded in at some point, but luckily my place is next to some pretty low roads so there's a little bit of a buffer.

This is the street I live off of last year.
That fucking sucks. We are expecting to get between 4-8 or 8-10 inches of rain, which really makes me concerned. My neighborhood doesn't flood, but my backyard does...that heavy rainstorm a couple weeks ago freaked me out. I might try to get some sandbags for my patio doors.

the above street is to my left, and there's a big park next to the bayou on the right, and a road with a huge and unnecessary dip behind me, so luckily it gives me a pretty safe zone (so far, knocks on wood). But power/not being able to leave issues will suck.
Went from a TD to a hurricane in under 24 hours. Wasn't expected to be much more than a minimal hurricane yesterday, now we're looking at Cat 3 - maybe 4.

It always happens like that unfortunately, especially since the gulf is so warm and perfect conditions for it to only strengthen. I fucking hate hurricanes. I never really worried about them until Katrina. I never evacuated until Katrina. I didn't lose my home in Katrina, but I lost everything else.
It really looks like Texas is going to get pummeled with rain as there is a low pressure that is going to cause it to be slow moving. Which means we will be getting shit-ton of water as well.
You're just too young to grasp how stylin' I really was. All the boys wanted to do me when I was 5. Actually the girls did too. My haircut was confusing.
