Just got home from National Airport in DC, where the crappy weather throughout the northeast canceled a bunch of flights. I was traveling with 17 students on a service trip to Peru. We were going to have to miss our connecting flight in Dallas and the next flight to Lima that could accommodate all of us wasn't until August 8th!!! So the kids didn't get to go help the Peruvians and we all just went home from the airport. The kids are getting their money back at least.

Oh that sucks Hopefully the trip can be made at another time down the road.

We're hoping to make it next year with most of the same kids. The group of students going this year was awesome. The parish in Peru gets a lot of visitors so we'll have to book soon to line up a trip for next summer. Thank you for the well wishes
snowmanomura what's it like in your area? We have thick smokiness/haziness all around that is apparently coming from fires in AZ.
The fires are north of me, so it isn't too hazy. But we are in the heart of monsoon season right now so we have weekly dust / lightning /or rain storms. Been miserably hot the last week.
I am not sure if everyone is aware, but Louisiana is getting pounded by weather. Denham Springs which is about 5 miles from where I grew up until I was 8 is completely underwater. My dad who still lives in Baton Rouge is dry but both my childhood home and my dad and my step-mother's old house is underwater. My sister still lives in Denham Springs and luckily is ok. She just got power/internet/phones back this morning and is basically stuck in her apartment due to the weather. There is nothing that I can do to help her due to all the flooding surrounding her. All weekend I was worried about her because I couldn't get in touch with her and I am so happy that she is fine but I just wish there was something I could do. My friend from high school was stuck on I-12 for over 28 hours due to the weather. The food/water that the national guard dropped for those stuck was gone by the time he got to it. They had to walk to four stores before finally finding one that wasn't completely bare. The devastation of these storms are so severe, and feel very hurricane Katrina like. It is all I can think about right now. I am so worried about childhood friends and neighbors that I know still live in that area.
The worst part is that the flooding is just the tip, once it recedes then it is a matter of cleaning up and rebuilding. Some of those areas are outside of flood zones and therefore there will be no flood insurance and I am not sure what those people will be able to do. My heart is breaking right now.
Louisiana just can not catch a break. I've been watching. From there. Hope all of yours are OK. Wish we could figure out a way to send all this damn water to the places that need it.
I don't know how to post a video from facebook, but this link will take you to the video of my childhood neighborhood underwater. www.facebook.com/rmcbathspears/videos/1386788414668986/ My house was one street over. My sister is about 1/2 mile away and dodged a bullet since all around her area is flooded.
They ought to build some water pipelines around the country. Forget Keystone oil, get some water from flood zones to the drought stricken.
Seriously. I've been thinking this for awhile. Any engineers in here that explain why it's a stupid idea and not economically possible?
Seriously, there are initiatives to move water around the nation to relieve drought, etc. The US is actually one large interconnected water grid just like power. There are many issues that make your idea a challenge; environmental and drinking water concerns, pumping cost, requirement to replace old piping due to rust or deterioration, finding land to add or connect lines, and so on. The idea is not "stupid" but, a cost benefit analysis with design is my recommendation on a case by case basis. Also promoting interstate water management between states and not letting the Feds take that over.
I worked regional power and gas issues as a systems engineer. Keystone was a key cog in a national system that could have been a lot more efficient. Politicians killed it at the expense of the people. It was like adding a bridge or interchange to relieve pressure at rush hour. Not so much about environmental issues, but you wouldn't expect the truth these days from the media. My opinion.

It hasn't snowed here once yet and the weather has been consistently in the 60s and 70s - mid November and no snow. Thankfully we just elected a president who doesn't believe in climate change.
After living in Colorado the last few years and having the cold and snow enhance my festive mood (which is typically bah humbug towards the holidays), living in Nashville now and having it hit 74° yesterday made it feel like just another day. The girlfriend and I went on a nice hike with our dog and got drunk at a hibachi grill. But still. I don't want that hot of a day in December. Yuck.
Last week we had golf ball sized hail that did hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage. Today we're getting a foot of snow, and in between is was 80 degrees for a few days. Colorado is weird.
The weather really needs to make up its damn mind in Marietta GA. I had an exam that lasted for a little over an hour yesterday, and in that time period it went from sunny to thunderstorming to sunny to thunderstorming to sunny again. It's also about 90 degrees and ridiculously humid after the rain.
Oh, and there's also a bomb threat at a bank a few miles away from me. I know that has nothing to do with the weather, but it is a thing that is happening.

Yikes! The AJC is saying he shot himself and that a bomb robot put his backpack in a canister. Scary.
Also not having anything to do with the weather, my aunt and uncle live in Marietta.

In case y'all have no idea what is going on in New Orleans (and because I need to vent yet again about my fucked up city), we had severe flooding on Saturday last week. Like hip deep water in some areas. The Sewage & Water Board tried to lie and say that ALL the pumps were working correctly and that it is a combination of climate change and 9" of water in 2 hours time that caused the issue, but besides the fact that areas in the city that NEVER had flooded before flooded I knew that was all bullshit.
It is now slowly coming out that 16 pumps were not working (the number has been increasing by the day on the amount of non-working pumps), last night there was a fire that destroyed the turbines that power all the pumping stations on the eastbank and the city officially has no way to pump out rainfall that will occur. It is still raining here. The governor declared a state of emergency, which I found out about not through the news or press conferences on the rains/pumping stations but through weather.com.
The city also has broken/clogged catch basins, which they have been aware about for long enough that last year they put $13.1 million on the side for the city to fix/unclog these basins. Stacy Head who is in charge of the city counsel went off about the fact that they never started clearing those out. My girl (teammate/bonnaroo camping buddy) went out today to clear out 4 basins. She only successful was able to clear out 3 because of how bad the last one was. She lost her car in the floods while it was parked in her front yard on Saturday and she is concerned about further flooding.
I guess this could have gone in the GRRRRRRRR thread (or however many R's is in that title) but since it was weather related I figured here was more appropriate.
