I was thinking the other day, about how the Red Sox have been playing well recently even though their season doesn't terribly matter towards playoffs or anything important.
Boston has some good pieces in place for the future - at least on offense. I was happy that they could move Victorino and Napoli, so to be able to play other pieces and see if they could be future contributors. Jackie Bradley Jr. is on a hot streak lately, and who knows if it can last - but I'm happy he's being given another chance. Hopefully he gets the rest of the season to try and prove himself, ditto Rusney Castillo. Castillo was signed to a $72M contract a year or so ago, but had been sitting in Pawtucket (AAA) much of this year trying to get adjusted to the American game. On his most recent callup, he's been starting to come together as well.
The Hanley Ramirez in LF experiment needs to end, and as long as JBJ can keep contributing offensively as well as defensively - it will be a good time to move Hanley over to 1B. Right now Travis Shaw is hitting well and filling Napoli's hole well, but can that be sustained? Is Shaw really the 1B of the future? And besides, we're not paying Hanley all this money to be the worst left fielder in the bigs. It sucks to be Shaw, but at least until Ortiz retires and the DH spot opens up - HanRam should probably go to 1B.
Brock Holt is still the man. He won't get a regular position, but should get plenty of playing time filling in for off-days and injuries.
The Red Sox really should not do much on the offensive side this upcoming offseason. If things go wrong, make a mid-season move next year. I believe everyone is under team control for next year too.
If I were to pick the lineup for 2016, I'd go with:
C - Swihart / C. Vasquez
1B - HanRam
2B - Pedroia
SS - Bogaerts
3B - Fat Panda
LF - R. Castillo
CF - Betts
RF - JBJ
DH - Ortiz
Pitching: What. A. Mess.
I know the front office have (had) hard-ons for players under 30 willing to take four year contracts. With that said, Boston's stuck with Rick fucking Porcello for a few more years at 21M a year to be the most overpaid 5th starter in the game. That spot should have gone to Steven Wright, if looking within the current system. Wade Miley is ok at SP 3/4. Buchholz should of been traded, but had his annual injury show up weeks before the deadline. Joe Kelly is proof they got fucked over on that John Lackey trade. No idea if Uehara is coming back from this injury/age. They need to BADLY go out and get an ace this upcoming offseason, and probably half a bullpen while they're at it. It would not surprise me if some of the young hyped pitchers got moved for a more well known and proven name: E-Rod, Owens, Brian Johnson, etc...
It will be interesting to watch the big-market/big spending Sox, with the game's best farm system (according to a few, obviously this is subjective), and the hire of Dave Dombrowski, who is known to trade prospects to help the big league club.

Hanley isn't going to first unless Hanley wants to go to first. He won't go to first. He's the laziest player in the game.

In defense of the pitching, I'm a cardinals fan and I don't think even I could have predicted how hard the sox got backdoored on the Lackey deal. Kelly has a lot of good tools that have just gone to absolute waste.

Turns out Kelly has won five straight starts, and has been doing well this month. But after August 1st, the first of the five wins, he had an ERA over 6.

I had no idea he had won 5 straight. That seems like a minor miracle at this point.
P.S. - Apologies for that whole Allen Craig thing, too.

What are you saying sorry for? They drove that deal and got what they wanted.
Folks in the STL were up in arms over we gave too much...alas why Mo is the GM and not them.
I do think Lackey will enjoy year two with the Cards next year...I wonder if he's the number 1 starter for us in the playoffs this year? Waino is claiming he might make it back so we shall see.

I mean it wasn't exactly the most sincere apology. Number 1 should be Wacha. I wouldn't push Waino one way or the other. There's no real reason to rush him back into shape if he's not completely 100%. That being said, if he can get a start or two in before the playoffs, and he's ready to go, I would probably go Wacha-Waino-Lackey-Garcia. Lynn and Martinez in the pen.

You guys are crazy putting Lackey/Garcia in the rotation over Carlos. Also, fuck the Cardinals. Let's go Bucs!
Lackey and Garcia both have playoff experience, and a ton of success. I also like having the opportunity to have a lefty somewhere in the rotation against certain teams. That being said, it's not an easy decision to leave Martinez out of the rotation, and it still probably wouldn't happen.
But let's be honest, when all of your starters are working ERA's under 3.00, does it really matter who you leave out?
I wonder how much beer was purchased throughout the course of that game 5. With 2 points where every beer in the stadium was thrown into the air (one in protest, and one of pure elation). In a city starved for a successful sport franchise, the Jays sure do it in style. What.A.Fucking.Game.
I didn't see the game, except the last inning and a half.
watch the highlights. 7th inning, Jays catcher accidentally threw the ball off Choo's bat while tossing it back to the catcher. Runner scored cuz the play was considered live, but apparently a time out was being called in the process or something. Big ordeal. Lots of booze thrown on the field. If Bautista didn't hit that homer, there would have been some cop cars on fire after the game.

I think the rule was 6.03, but the gist of it was that Toronto was arguing that the batter interfered with the catcher's ability to throw it back to the pitcher. It's a judgment call and the umps reviewed it to make sure they got the rule right. The Jays played under protest from that point on but it wouldn't have mattered, I think the call was made correctly as the rule is written.
Go Jays. That catcher, Russell Martin, became a favorite of mine in his two years with the Pirates, and his first home run in the 2013 wild card game was one of the greatest moments of my life, so I'll root for the Jays.
