I will be moving to ATL in a mere matter of weeks I am very excited. I do not have the slightest insight to the music scene over there and I am really excited to get to know it with a completely clean open-mind.
Here's a list of venues from Reddit--- which ones are the coolest and what should I be checking out first? Anything missing?

Tabernacle, Masquerade, The Earl, Variety Playhouse and Center Stage are all great. Terminal West is getting a lot of good shows but I haven't actually been there yet. There are also 2 big amphitheaters Lakewood and Verizon Wireless in Alpharetta and a smaller one Chastain Park. The arenas are Philips Arena and Gwinnett Center in Duluth.

Those up there are the ones I've been to. My favorites are The Earl, The Clermont Lounge (still my favorite place I've ever played a gig), Terminal West, & The Five Spot. Javamonkey in Decatur is good for small, intimate shows.
You should add Eddie's Attic and Park Tavern, because they have shows during the spring/summer.
Are you friends mayonaise over on FB? She doesn't come on here much anymore so I doubt she'll see this thread, but she'd be the first person I'd ask. Also, Doug G
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

First of all, I'm totally jealous that you're moving to Atlanta! I loved living there and would move back in a heartbeat if the right opportunity presented itself.
The Variety is one of my favorite places ever to see a show. (It's in Little Five Points, which I guess is kind of the hipsterish area, but there are some cool little shops, bars, and restaurants around there. We used to take the MARTA to the Inman Park station and walk to L5P.) I'm short, so I usually either have to be right up front or all the way out of the crowd if I want to see the stage at all. The floor at the Variety is on a slight slant (I think it used to be a movie theater), and the middle has actual seats, so I could be pretty much anywhere in there and be able to see. But even better than that, the sides of the room had platforms, so we would usually go earlyish and get at the front of the first level of platforms, which provided a great view of the stage. It's been over five years now since I lived in Atlanta, but the Variety regularly got good shows. We saw shows like Les Claypool, Gogol Bordello, and George Clinton there. They would also occasionally get some really random stuff, like we saw Daniel Johnston there, and we were supposed to see Tony Clifton, but that got cancelled.
The Earl was another favorite. It's kind of divey, but it's got a little restaurant in the front, which actually has pretty good food. The stage is in the back in a smallish room with a separate bar. There are a few sofas, but it's mostly just standing room. I think the only musical act we actually saw there was Electric Six, but we also saw Brian Posehn and Patton Oswalt there (separately).
Smith's Olde Bar was pretty near us for the first two years we were in Atlanta, but we only went there for one show. It was fine, but the only thing I really remember about it was that we bought Red Stripe beers for some reason and did not like them. I don't even actually remember who it was we saw there. The bar/restaurant downstairs is not bad. We went and played pool there a couple of times.
The Tabernacle is downtown. I'd say it's comparable to the Variety, but a little bigger and nicer, so it maybe gets better shows. I never felt as comfortable at the Tabernacle as I did at the Variety, but it's still a good place to see a show. The only time I had a real complaint was when a show started at like 6:30, and the stained glass windows weren't covered, so it was weirdly very bright in there for a while. They get a pretty good variety of music (we saw TV on the Radio, Les Claypool and Matisyahu there) and comedy (we saw Cheech & Chong and Louis CK there) shows.
The 5 Spot is a pretty small place right down the road from the Variety. The only show we went to there was That 1 Guy, which was awesome, but the place itself didn't stand out one way or the other to me.
Chastain Park that sang mentioned is kind of nice, but it's kind of different. David Byrne said that when he was playing there, someone told him that it was a "picnic crowd," and to not really expect the audience to pay attention, but the audience was actually pretty into his show. Ordinarily, though, I'd say "picnic crowd" was a pretty good description. They let you bring food and drinks into the venue, so I think that rich people get season passes and go and see a bunch of shows they don't care about and drink wine and such. We saw David Byrne, Willie Nelson and BB King (Jimmy Carter and Ted Turner were in the front row at that one), and Lyle Lovett there. The David Byrne and Lyle Lovett shows are still two of my favorite shows ever, but I think that had way more to do with the shows themselves than the venue.
I've been to shows at Verizon and Phillips, but neither stands out as far as the venues go. And I'm not really familiar with any of the other ones that have been mentioned.
Welcome to Atlanta! So I am definitely not an expert on venues in Atlanta mayonaise would be the person to get in touch with there. The ones I do know about: Opera is in midtown and hosts mostly edm events, including a weekly night on Fridays called Illuminate, hosted by Liquified. The Tabernacle is a converted church with great acoustics and decor, it's hosts mostly mid tier bands and larger EDM shows.
If you have other questions about the city in general let me know. What part are you moving to?

Thanks for your help and response!
Most likely Midtown, I am still waiting to see which location my employer will place me at.
You're missing some good ones: Drunken Unicorn/MJQ (same location, different rooms), Buckhead Theatre and Mammal Gallery. Also, Terminal West is at the King Plow complex. The Five Spot closed and is now Aisle 5. Since you have both the Sound Table and Music Room on the list, here's some advice. The Souind Table gets bigger name acts, but the electronic style is the same between the two places. If the Sound Table gets to crowded for you (it will), The Music Room is walking distance away with more elbow room.
