Lolllll, enjoy the music regardless of what they play no need to write letters. Lots of artists HATE their biggest hits (i.e. Todd Rungeren's Bang on the Drums), But you do you.

Lol. I've probably seen Todd 50 times, and he's pretty ornery when it comes to playing "the hits" (both of them). Sometimes he'll do them straight, other times he'll rearrange them to where they're unrecognizable, or just doesn't play them at all. A guy with a catalog that runs 40 years deep does whatever the hell he wants. I know it's off-topic, but that's not a name that gets thrown around nearly as often as it should, imo.
did i read that right, you sent a complaint to the fest bcuz a band didnt play your fav song by them?
da fuck?
Hell yea I did. I was at work, had access to a handy computer & got paid to do it. Didn't take much time. IMO, 'Kids' is not just MY favorite MGMT song. It is/was the favorite song of a shizzton of people who were there. You, I guess, were not. That video that was posted up above. It's a nice song, but not near as good as 'Kids'.
The weird thing to me is: Why wouldn't you want to play that song?! It's not like it's a 'We Built This City' kind of song. It's a killer song & people love to hear it. People that paid alot of money to hear you.
That guy just blew my mind... The artist is getting payed to play music. Unless there is a part of their contract that requires certain songs be played, then the fest and fans can fuck right off. Like... Wtf, lol. I am nearly at a loss of words. All I'm saying is you need to get that stick out of your ass and realize that nobody owes you anything. Especially not a band that is playing you music, ha
Glad I freaked you out, man! My story is related only to MGMT. I don't care if some other band that has alot of fine songs doesn't play one or three of them. No problem at all. Here you have to understand that for me, just about their only really good song is 'Kids'. That goes for alot of other people too. Maybe you're rich or something, but I paid a good chunk of change to be there, bought alot of beer/food & then this Headliner wusses out on doing (again, my opinion) their by far best song that all the casual fans would have loved to have heard.
When you play a fest, you are playing to alot of casual fans who are in no way familiar with your music. You're the Headliner & they're going to stay to see you. To me, it is just common courtesy to play a piece of music that they could relate to and/or have probably heard & liked.
I'm guessing all the jerkwad artists appreciate your point of view. Would also like to point out they aren't doing this as a philanthropy. They got paid a good chunk of change to get up there for 1.5 hours and entertain. If it was free, they can play whatever the heck they want to.

You paid a lot of money to hear one specific song? get outta here, dude. You dont get to pick their setlist, you dont know if there was a reason they didnt play it. I find it hard to believe the person who runs the fest admitted to being 'duped' over this, i imagine he couldnt care less. Its one thing to be bummed you missed a song you like but it takes a special kind of asshole to actively complain and write an email about it to a higher up. They dont care if you prefer one song to another, thats as subjective as it gets.
Look up Father John Mistys XPN Fest set from this summer and then tell me if you still felt MGMT 'duped' people who paid a lot of money.

They are creative human beings, though. Shouldn't they be able to play what they want? They're not singing puppets up there.

The show did suck and there were a lot of down tempo songs mixed in with the 'favs' Lead singer had a broken arm and they were trying to finish the tour, so I guess credit to them?
I think he's got a point though. Play Kids. Literally writing my senator right now.
Dear Trip Pittman, first of all, great name. I bet your fraternity bros really got a kick out of introducing you while pointing into your chest at the Alabama tailgates (ROLL DAMN TIDE!). I really bet the ladies went crazy. Hell, probably some of the dudes too. Anyhow, someone on the Bonnaroo message board was talking about a band in the Hangout Festival part (I know, it is weird) and about how this band, MGMT, may or may not play what some people considered their favorite song about a decade ago. It's called "Kids" and it's actually a very bad song in the live setting, but, dear sir, we don't want a tarnished legacy for the Hangout moving forward. Can you imagine all the trouble you'd be saving Mr. Zis and company if you just created a legislative order ensuring that MGMT does indeed play "Kids" at the festival? Now I know there are some other issues in our country at the moment. But I'll join you in admitting that things like education, climate change and reproductive rights take a back seat to the anarchy that could ensue at the show if something heinous like this were to happen. Seriously, dear sir, ask yourself, what's more important, friggin Foreign policy or having the crowd ready to liftoff for Twenty1 Pilots? I trust you know the answer. Keep on crushin ass, bro. I know you will.

Yea idk how anyone can skip hangout. Just too good of a time on the beach and relaxing. I got my entire life to stress about seeing "good acts" that are usually better in a smaller setting anyway. Hangout still had the best u.s Foals set last year.
Also when those smaller acts get good enough they'll get invited to hangout and I'll see em then.
Even though he's one of the unique bookings that Hangout got this year, a big turn off for a group was Frank Ocean. Mumford we all enjoy, we'd probably check out what's in the tent vs 21P, and then we needed that 3rd HL and none of us give a shit about Frank. Chance being a #4 is great, and the Sigur Ros/Franz Ferdinand bookings were cool too but idk, we needed just a couple other bigger names up top to make it worth the expenses.

How was the part about Foals' best US performance measured exactly?
I don't go to The Hangout to see "good bands". I wouldn't want to see "good bands" at The Hangout. If I want to see "good bands", I will wait till they get "good enough" to play at The Hangout, at which point I will remember that I don't want to see "good bands" at The Hangout and I will be forced to skip The Hangout due to injuries incurred when my "brain explodes"

best is obviously subjective especially considering Foals rocked every fest they played but i think he is just referring to getting to play a set oppo a headliner with more time and full production.
