I meant more about Boston Calling ever being the kind of festival that Oasis or The goshdarn Smiths would play.
Why not? With 90 available acres (half of which they're choosing not to use in 2017, whether "they" is Crashline or Harvard), there's enough room to be as big as mid-tier fests like Governor's Ball.
When Boston Calling lost out on Outkast in September 2014, they weren't booked by a more prominent fest. They were booked by LouFest, which tends to be a mix of a handful of touring acts with just as many local bands. If they can book Outkast, there's no reason why Boston Calling can't book Oasis.
So, people, who's starting the 2017 thread? We're two months or so away from the lineup announcement, and other festival lineups coming sooner will give us hints as to who's on the circuit this year and who might be "attending a Harvard symposium" next May.

I respectfully disagree. I can never imagine Oasis or The Smiths playing a 2nd tier city fest.

Did BC actively go for Outkast or is this just speculation?
That being said, Oasis or The Smiths won't play BC. They'll do Coachella and that's about it. At this rate, Morrissey will die before The Smiths get back together anyway. Oasis have almost never played US-based festivals. IIRC the last one they did was ACL in 2005 along with Coachella in 2002. I don't see that changing. They'd rather do a few nights at MSG and the Hollywood Bowl as they've done in the past.
I think Bon Iver is going to headline a night. Thats just me speculating though. I have no inside knowledge.
I've been predicting them for a while due to the Crashline Productions connection. Fingers crossed this is the year. Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, or Kendrick are the ones I'm really hoping for.

Agreed. If either of them reunite, they are playing Coachella and Glastonbury. Maybe Lollapalooza. Both are gonna charge a whole lot more than Outkast did for their reunion tour.

I have my doubts about Glasto. It's more of a prestige thing than a make money thing. Noel talks a lot about wanting to play it as a solo act, but he's played every other UK festival and has yet to play Glasto.

Yeah if I understand correctly Glasto pays less than most other festivals. But in regards to Noel he's said that they've just straight up never asked him to play. He says every summer he always keeps that weekend open in case they ask him to play. If his 3rd album really does come out this spring I could see him finally playing the pyramid stage as a sub.
Bon Iver would be a perfect fit for this fest. I'm pretty meh on him, but I'd stay and watch.

I'll put money down that that's just Noel talking shit. There's no way that they have "never asked him", but nearly every other major festival has. He's a guaranteed crowd pleaser and I agree that he'd be a perfect sub. I also think he wants a headlining spot on his own. He's already headlined a handful of smaller fests last tour and I bet he wants to make the leap with his next album. I don't see it happening.
he/they '12 - Firefly '13 - Firefly, Made In America '14 - Firefly, Made In America '15 - Mountain Jam (Sunday), Firefly, Pitchfork, Made In America '16 - Boston Calling, Firefly, Osheaga, Made In America, Roots Picnic NYC '17 - Boston Calling, Gov Ball, Firefly (Sunday), Pitchfork, Day For Night '18 - Boston Calling, Mountain Jam, Osheaga '19 - Form, Firefly (Sunday) '22 - Boston Calling, Firefly

If Boston Calling was using all 90 acres, it could book any act willing to play U.S. fests a notch below Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo. It could easily be a Gov Ball-sized event, given the size of the Harvard Athletic Complex.
I would bet the Shins are back and headlining this time.
I also think they'll be back. But they haven't really gotten any bigger since 2013, so I'm not sure about headlining
Kendrick Lamar - Bon Iver - The Strokes Chance the Rapper - The Shins - Ryan Adams or The Lumineers
I wonder if they'll give a single headliner an unopposed spotlight each night, or if they'll counter-program something very different on the stage to the far right in the grounds photo. I'm all for maximum choice.

But why would Oasis and The Smiths be willing to play U.S. fests below Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo? Or a better question: would 2nd tier fests even bother to host them, given their lack of popularity among young crowds as well as their high asking price.

Yea I don't quite see Oasis and Smiths doing Boston Calling, solely due to the fact there are bigger feasts they could play, mostly likely offering them more money, I just don't see it. Especially if BC is gonna continue to try to aim for a younger crowd, those bands would not fit their 'vision' or whatever.
That being said, Twenty One Pilots seems to be wrapping up their 2 year Blurryface World Tour/Emotional Roadshow in April in Australia, with 3 sold out shows in Boston between September 2015-June 2016, 1 sold out CT show in June 2016 and another in Jan 2017, and a sold out show in Providence coming in Jan as well, I don't see them CONTINUING to tour the album almost 2 years to the after the LP came out AND coming back to Boston AGAIN. And them wrapping up the tour in Australia would follow what they did for Vessel, minus the Mexico City show they did after AUS. However, that being said they have draw, a HUGE fan base, and no 2017 boston show, but II just don't see it happening. All in all, almost 100 shows to wrap up that tour cycle, ya smaller then other LP cycles, but I'd like to think eventually Blurryface (trash album in my view) will overstay its welcome and they would need to release SOMEthing more to continue to get that draw.
Chance The Rapper sold out Blue Hills Bank Pavilion in under an hour. He promised a second show in Boston. Multiple times he said he "didn't forget about Boston second show" "it's coming soon". That second show never surfaced. Having one of the biggest releases in the last year, and again never actually announcing that second show, and being a clear 'want' among boston calling attendees, I honestly think this year will FINALLY be the year they get him. Maybe not for headliner, but certainly second-teir, or co-headliner with another act (Childish Gambino comes out with his new LP 'Awaken, My Love!' on Dec 2, could we see a return to Gambino?)
Bon Iver had possibly one of the most well-received album releases of the last 6 months, no Boston show, sold out many shows in NY and CA and europe over the last few months, hasn't played Boston in ages- in fact the last time he WAS gonna play he was with Volcano Choir at BC Sept 2014 and his set was canceled due to weather, AND the fact Crash Line has him included in the other fest, I almost wanna say he'll be the headliner that nobody really wants him to headline but because he was so well-received and so many people like him, he'll be the Sunday headliner easily, even tho personally I think he'd be a second-tier.
The 1975 i can easily see doing second-tier. No Boston show this current leg 2 they are doing, last show was in Lowell and a bit far from Boston meaning some were not able to go, they had a number 1 album, and while they did Lolla, Coachella, and Firefly, they missed many other US festivals on the circuit this summer and another 'large draw' band and their production is one of the best of the year, maybe best I've seen ever. They'd do a Saturday or Sunday evening/sunset/or right before the headliner set and it will be well received (at least better then sept 2014).
The Killers has been hailed as the "ideal festival band" and "why festivals exist" and had quite possibly the best received set at Gov Ball this last year. Last Boston show was in Dec 2012, did a sold out show in July in CT, and since their reformation in 2012 have always done a handful of festivals every year, even with Brandon doing a solo run in 2015. AND they are currently working on a new LP for 2017 release. Based upon BC's twitter and Facebook, The Killers paper to be another big 'want' for future attendees and would make complete sense for BC to get them with the bigger attendance, as CHP was probably too small of a venue/festival for them. It would be an easy attendance booster, be a great show, and in general be a smart move for CL.
Side note- as much as I hate him and to be honest I don't think BC would ever bring him, but The Weeked has no Boston date on his newly-announced 2017 tour and has the Saturday of BC 2017 open....
The Wombats won't play, they just wrapped up their album cycle and 'will be back in 4 years'.
The Lumineers has no Boston date on 2017 tour (have looked at they dates in May tho), and played 2 sold out shows at Blue Hills Bank this past september. Could be second-tier.
Fitz and The Tantrums play HOB on Tuesday (11/15). Very well could see them back for their debut.
Glass Animals played a HUGE show and fantastic at Blue Hills Bank back in September, has a critically acclimated album, and their new UK tour wraps up in early May leaving space for a second NA tour to follow, as their first NA tour wrapped up a few weeks back. Could see them second, but most likely third-tier. Same with Two Door Cinema Club, who plays a large show at Agganis Arena Friday (11/18), new album out a month ago, and just in general a well-received band.
Other Ideas- DRAM, Lil Yachty, Lil Dicky (those three have no Boston dates but Dram's show in Jan 22) and I'm sure wether we like it or not there'll be at least one DJ. Airborne Toxic Event will make a return next year after a year's break, Boston is the violin player's hometown.
EDIT- Matt of Muse just confirmed they are doing Lolla next year. Wishful thinking, totally ridiculous, but the one stupid wish i have would be for them to play BC, but that won't happen. They'll probably only do Lolla, ACL, Outside Lands, Osheaga, and probably yet again Coachella. But who knows.
They do need at least a few 'older/legend' acts, I think tho I'm not sure who's that be. I'm sure they will also continue to try to book more women on the lineup, too. They always have that one country-ish artist too.

Woah. Chill out.
1. You can pretty much declare that any indie rock, indie pop, or indie folk act that is active and has no dates in Boston between April and June is in play. That includes: Glass Animals, The Head and the Heart, Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant, The Shins, The Lumineers, etc. Going into detail is 100% not necessary

I would be very happy with a bunch of these acts! Excellent list. I'm baffled that Lady Lamb and Quilt have still yet to play this fest.
Speaking of The XX: Would they headline? Unless I'm great overestimating their appeal, it seems like they're in a better place to headline than say Alt-J when they did.
Cross Dawes off the list as a 2017 possibility. They've just announced an Orpheum date on March 11.
Possibility List:
Dawes Oasis The Smiths
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to six hour sets from The Smiths on Sunday, Oasis on Saturday, and the weekend kickoff with Ryan Adams' spoken word piece about how much he loves cats and pinball, and how much he hates Taylor Goldsmith.
