I saw this same tour and thought Hall & Oates were great. And they played sheds with 15k+ capacities. Same type of venues Dead & Co played this summer
yeah, sheds. my point is that duran duran played arenas and shiz. duran duran is a much bigger act than hall and oates. they aren't interchangeable from lineup placement standpoint.
dead and co. played sheds, but they also played citi field, folsom field, alpine valley, fendway. places hall and oates couldn't dream of filling.
Lineup placement depends on the festival too
Earth Wind and Fire plays arenas and they were on the eighth line in 2015

8/10 RHCP is a bit weak, but I love The Weeknd and U2 is an insane booking. Probably the first festival since Shaky Knees 2014 where I've liked all three headliners.
I'd honestly give it a 7 just because of the fact U2 is a pretty unique get. I'm no U2 fan but it would be pretty cool to see them in a fest atmosphere. RHCP and Weeknd earn a combined 0 points for me.
Sheds can vary greatly, from 6,800 (ascend amphitheatre) to 37,000 (Alpine valley). Possibly higher or lower, those two just popped in my head.
So do arenas though. The biggest sheds/amphitheaters tend to be bigger than the largest arenas (approximately 20,000 capacity).
But to stay on-topic, I'd say that Duran Duran and Hall & Oates have about an equal status. The latter with more recognizable songs though, for whatever that is worth.

I thought last years headliners were even better for my personal taste. But I also recognize (if its true) that these headliners are a much bigger draw. Gotta see an undercard before I rate anything.
2017: 2/24 Twenty One Pilots 4/1 Radiohead 6/7 Glass Animals 9/10 Modest Mouse 9/21 Arcade Fire 9/29 Kings of Leon 10/3 Foster the People 10/17 The xx 10/22 LCD Soundsystem 11/8 Bon Iver

they also play minor league hockey arenas, regional university basketball gyms, and casinos.
Duran Duran was 6th at OSL this year (second line). They are bigger than EWF or Hall and Oates, and would be billed higher.

1-10 on a personal scale or legit festival headliners scale? Granted RHCP has been playing everything, The Weeknd is still a good get festival headliner wise and U2 is a bigger get than any other festival will do imo. I guess if you wanna say Beyonce or Radiohead for 'chella is better but U2 doesn't play US festivals AT ALL so that's a pretty big deal. I say 8-9 outta 10.

In terms of Bonnaroo putting together a top line that answers the 2016 45,000 ticket problem... 10/10. They did exactly what they needed to do to get sales back up. Of course, I think the undercard is going to be equally critical.

Personal scale. If we're talking what will sell, this is like a 9, almost 10.

On a personal side, I think I'll enjoy 2/3 this year. That's pretty good, based on previous years. 8/10

Shit, they could put a 2016 caliber undercard and it'd sell well. I'm not saying the headliners were the issue last year, but just look at what kind of venues U2 played on their last tour and how well it sold. I can't think of anyone else who could do that right now.
I'll concede U2 are a big get - but barring a few songs, it's just not my thing. For me, this would be like Springsteen in '09 - a huge act that lots of people will go nuts for, and who I'll give a shot for 40 minutes or so before getting bored and bouncing. I see their most recent setlists have my favourite U2 song (Sunday Bloody Sunday) about a third the way in, so I'd probably stay through that.
RHCP... people shit on them, and I get it, it's not the most inspired choice - but I thought they were fine in 2012. They sounded fine and it was a decent setlist.
I would be excited to see The Weeknd. Dude's got a helluva voice, and great beats to back it. Some of his newer stuff tends a bit towards the poppier end than I like, but I'm sure he'd put on a great show.
One act I don't care for, one okay act, and one act I'm excited for. That's pretty par for the course for Roo, and better than I was expecting.
7/10. Want no part of the Weeknd, Chili Peppers are kind of just meh, not bad but been there done that, but I've always wanted to see U2 and their ticket prices are ridic for their own shows. With a decent undercard I'd probably be there.

In terms of getting people to buy tickets: 10/10. Roo picked the perfect "legendary" act, the perfect pop act that appeals to younger and older folks that isn't polarizing and a pretty well-liked band that also appeals to older and younger folks.
In my personal opinion: 5. U2 is cool and I'd see them, The Weeknd I'd likely see a chunk of and RHCP I'd skip entirely.

My biggest disappointment with the Chili Peppers is that I've always been a big fan, but I know their show will be lackluster
If they ignored everything post Stadium Arcadium it could be an awesome show.
Instead, it'll be the singles that have been played out and some shitty deeper cuts from their new album. The only "exciting" track they played at Lolla this year was Blood Sugar Sex Magik
I've seen U2 twice and it was great but their setlists aren't terribly different now, but they're an awesome live act.
Saw RHCP at Roo in 2012(?) and enjoyed it, but don't need to see them again.
Would like to see The Weeknd, but wouldn't buy a ticket just to see him. That being said, I'll probably be there regardless, just not buying presale this year. I'll just roll the dice and hope to scalp one for under 200
Would y'all rather have Duran Duran or Hall & Oates as the throwback act in the Top 10? I personally would want Hall & Oates, but I know they just played Pilgrimage.
Would Steely Dan fall in this category also? I'd love love love to see them
U2 will be fun I think. They're a big act that I wouldn't see on their own, but I'll be excited to check them out in a festival setting. They'll definitely move tickets though. I know they're not totally my thing, but I also know that they're a huge get. So good for Roo there, that is way better than I would've expected from them.
RHCP doesn't excite me at all. Their Lolla stream looked super lackluster. I like a handful of songs by them, and I'd probably check them out for a bit depending on what LNs were after them. But they're easily the least exciting HL for me...
I am a huge Weeknd fan. I saw him at ACL last year and the show was pretty good, but the crowd sorta ruined it for me a bit. I would be excited to go for pit for this set and try to get a better experience than last time. I'm not too into his newer stuff, 'Starboy' is catchy but 'False Alarm' is god awful. His poppier hits have been more annoying than anything- 'Earned It', 'Can't Feel My Face', 'Love Me Harder', etc. But he does a good job of balancing his darker alt-r&b stuff with the pop hits, contrary to earlier discussion.
So overall, I'd say its a 7/10. U2 is a huge get, just because you may not like them all that much you have to recognize that this is big for Roo. I wonder if they'll be a Roo exclusive or not.
