I'm double majoring in history and Spanish to teach. I figured since I'm getting the language degree it would be good to listen to some music from the culture. Any exceptional artists or albums I should check out?

Most of the music I would recommend would probably be most often played at a quinceanera, but outside of Selena's discography I also really enjoy Aventura (Obsesion and Un Beso are good songs), Juan Luis Guerra (Burbujas de Amor), and Juanes (Nada Valga Sin Tu Amor). Let's see what else...El Gran Varon by Willie Colon..oh a lot of Hector Lavoe is really really good.. I probably have a few others but I'd have to check my library when I get home.
Edit: As far as the culture goes def check out Hector Lavoe and Selena (who I'm sure you're well aware of already). Aventura is good bachata-pop but I wouldn't consider them cultural icons. But I'm also not of the culture so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Born and raised in South Texas, Selena is life.
To add onto this list, Mana is a really great Mexican rock band, as well as Molotov. For some Colombian Spanish, you got as mentioned Juanes and of course Shakira (Shakira's old Spanish albums are freaking fantastic). OMGOD BOMBA ESTERO IS AMAZING. They are electronic/cumbia. Somo dos and Fiesta are some of my favorites.
Reggaeton/Bachata genre: - Daddy Yankee - J Balvin - Don Omar (my ultimate favorite reggaeton artist) - Wisin y Yandel - Prince Royce - Ivy Queen - Calle 13
To get into the Mexican pop genre: - Belanova - Julieta Venegas
- Belinda - Juan Gabriel (more popular among the older generation)
If ever want to drink tequila and cry, I highly recommend Vicente Fernandez. He's considered to be "El Rey de la Cancion Ranchera".
