Just had an interesting conversation with a guy that hung out with the artists this year, in he past he's played the show himself. Apparently they "live nation" are discussing five Roos over the next four years. The plan is to separate music genre and to target specific fans. Looks like the days of an amazing eclectic group of musicians and fans is about to end. This year seems to be a test run of that type of thought process, lack of diversity in music.

^this information couldnt be anymore false. the CORRECT information is that Bonnaroo will stay the same, and the proposed additional festivals (having nothing to do with Bonnaroo) that they hope to launch at The Farm will have targeted music genre demographics.

I hope they can make these other festivals work. It would be fantastic to spread out the cost of infrastructure improvements instead of the cost going up and the lineup taking a kick to the dingding, like what presumably happened this year.

I agree the original poster appears to have some incorrect info: I attended the backstage Les Paul Award presentation on Sunday and an insider told me they're trying to put together something like a southern rock festival in the fall. They also tried to lure a large Christian event to the farm last year, but it fell through, according to this person. I'm not going to name them, but they're legit.

If this is true I think it's bad news. I love Bonnaroo specifically for the diversity, and if each of thee newer fests on the grounds compartmentalize genres, I could definitely see it hurting the lineup for actual Bonnaroo

I dont think Bonnaroo is going to change as much. They will throw a country festival in which Bonnaroo barely overlaps well after the country fest that usually conflicts with Roo. Most likely a EDM fest. Thinking more along the lines of Camp Bisco than TomorrowWorld. Maybe they will have a Bonnaroo II kind of thing towards the end of the season with acts that were just unavailable to them in June, but Bonnaroo and 2 genre fest is what I think is going to come to be.

It's less presumable and more exactly what happened. The big cost is out of the way in getting hooked up to sewage/water and the festival didn't take too big of a hit. I expect a big lineup next year.

My feelings exactly. If they make a fall fest that features some of the more underserved genre's at Roo, thats fine. But I don't want it at the expense of Bonnaroo's diversity. The diversity is honestly one of the biggest selling points when I try to convince a big group to come with me. I cant really see Roo doing a separate fest that is solely EDM. The market is already pretty saturated with those. I guess it would depend on the time of year the did it, but I feel like Roo doesn't have the name recognition or history in the EDM world to get fans to make the trip to Tennessee.
I had heard this as soon as live nation bought a stake in Bonnaroo. Superfly owns the land, it was all about having access to the land to put on a few other fests.
Funny......but unfortunately extremely likely since Live Nation has its greedy paws in the EDC pockets as well. They'll probably try to take advantage of the failed TomorrowWorld as there is no longer a large scale EDM festival in the south.

Livenation has an ownership interest in Insomniac and HARD right? I could see them branding it as EDC Tennessee or HARD Tennessee, would make it more appealing to the youngins

I am a Taylor Swift agnostic, but if they did a country fest at Roo with her as the headliner, they would sell 80,000 tickets the first day tickets went on sale.

This seems like a plan to salvage some of the acquisition cost for the site itself, but it can't be a good thing for the Roo proper prospects. If a big part of this year's 50k was the vibe/farm people - and now they have four options besides Roo.. .?
compare the lineup of 2009 with this year. That's the only comparison I can personally make. This year clearly wasn't as diverse. It would make sense from a corporate point of view to see "what if" results would be. One major problem and for the life of me I don't get , is why they are going to compete yearly with CMA? Standard rooms in Nashville were going for $250/nt which basically means don't bother planning a side trip to Nashville before or after Roo. Competing dates also means, no country, blues or blue grass for you Roo. Like it or not, bringing those genres increased the diversity of the crowd. Strangely "it feels" as if they are going the way of riot fest etc...in other words "targeting" specific demographics at the expense of others.
Waiting for next year to see, but it won't surprise me if Roo only draws the numbers they did this year, then you have to ask yourself how many need come for a corporation to continue offering it. Nothing lasts forever and a 30% drop in attendance has to be alarming them. Maybe this year will alarm them enough to step it up,next year?
