Think you'd have to have Twenty One Pilots on Sunday. How many TOP fans would stick around all day Sunday for Pearl Jam?
It would depend on the Sunday undercard, but I'd probably leave.
Now if you did a dual headliner Saturday with TOP and Chance/Childish and then a fun, somewhat respected EDM late night like Odesza/Flume/Pretty Lights I could get behind embracing that just as a full high energy party day.
One reason I think that Pearl Jam might not fit as another headliner is that if they were really going for Beyonce, which I think is pretty clearly the case, they might feel like they need another headliner who is at least somewhat musically similar to her. As there arent a ton of R&B/Pop headliners who might be able to fit there, which would make sense for the delay. The R&B potential replacements that might make sense would be what, Stevie Wonder, The Weeknd, and Usher & The Roots. Any other ideas for that style of music?

I don't think the attempt at booking Beyonce had anything to do with trying to reach an R&B demographic. She is arguably the single biggest draw in live entertainment right now for the under 30 crowd. Through Goldenvoice/Coachella, Firefly thought they had a chance at getting her, so you can't blame them for taking the home run swing. But I don't think that means they now scramble for an R&B or Hip Hop headliner.
Same happened with Firefly's only other hip-hop headliner, Outkast. It had nothing to do with a genre or demo, it was just that their reunion was the biggest thing in music that year and getting them was a no brainer.
I don't know I think Usher & Roots is a bigger deal than some think. I feel like that would be a #5 act at least but more likely a 4th headliner.
i would put them in the 5 or 6 sot at firefly. ill be baffled if they're top 3. but then again i dont even think firefly would go after them.
but ya going after beyonce had nothing to do with wanting to go after that genre, it was about trying to ensure a sell out.
I think Usher and the Roots actually makes a ton of sense for Firefly.
Put them right on the second line where Snoop Dogg was.
Childish Gambino and Usher and the Roots fits Firefly's hip-hip strategy PERFECTLY. Respected but mainstream enough to have crossover appeal. They would pretty much call it a day on hip-hop for the rest of the lineup.

I think thats a fair point but what I mean is that if you look back at 2014 after Outkast, there is only 1 rap performer in the next 25 artists listed. Obviously Firefly isnt a huge festival on rap, but they still had some balance with rap in 2015 and 2016.

Right - which is why I would be shocked if neither Chance or Childish are in the top 6, and Childish is strongly hinted at being there.
5/9 The Polish Ambassador 5/10 Sean Paul 5/24 Andy Fraso & The UN, Pigeons Playing Ping pong 6/8 Gary Clark Jr. 6/20 SNACKTIME 7/12 Disco Biscuits (Atlantic City) 7/25 Beck w/The Philadelphia Orchestra 7/31 Justice 8/14 Ripe (Asbury Park) 8/24 Ripe (Philly) 8/25 Ripe (NY)

don't get me wrong, id love to see Usher + The Roots on the lineup. the videos i've seen of their show look fun as hell, i just dont think they would be billed above the snoop spot.
Usher & the Roots would be a really solid headliner. It's probably the highlight of the fest
If you're talking about recognizable, mainstream hits, Usher/Roots probably have more than the other headliners being discussed (TOP, Muse, Childish, and Chance anyway). If they were angling for Beyoncé, you'd think they would have had a fallback plan. But then again, this is RedFrog.

I think they def would. They headlined Roots Picnic, are billed about Bassnectar, have a much larger catalogue to draw from than a lot of the headliners getting booked elsewhere. They'd be booked above Chance. If they were one of the headliners here it would go Muse/ 21p/ Usher + The Roots. They Def wouldn't be lower than 4.
It's been a while since we got a poster released with a blurred out headliner. I love those. It's amateur hour that just screams Hangout or Firefly. Would be great fun.
Based on timing, this feels like a delay tactic. At least it's something. They easily could have started this a few weeks ago. Even putting out lower tier acts ala Roo Clues drums up interest
