Chef Leah Chase passed away today at 96. She was in league with my moms family in the 1950s fighting racism. She got mad at President Obama for putting hot sauce in her gumbo. lol. An angel from the early 1920s. Hail to that shit.

I don’t really know (m)any creole terms. A lot of that was mixes of English Spanish French Native American and black African and Caribbean dialects morphing words into common tongue. I’d think jambalaya and shit like aylabah (however you spell it) are of creole. The term here meant mixed up between cultures and often not in any racial construction. Someone Spanish and French for instance would have been considered creole way back. A lot of my black classmates in grammar school in the 70s used that term for someone of mixed race. So it later became that too or became accepted for that usage in the black community, because the kids were using a familiar term to describe something we all understood what it meant in that context. I’ve only seen Dr. John a handful of times, and he’s got so much music out there that it’s impossible for me to know very much. But I always liked him. He used to go to Krewe of Dreux back in the day. He’d always arrive by limo and be in a gorilla suit. We all knew who he was but wouldn’t bother him unless to peace him off or whatever if we crossed paths. Even though I only know a small portion of his music, there were other words in some of his songs that he must have heard old timers still using when he was coming up. RIP
52 weeks in the year and he passes the week before Bonnaroo. That's kinda crazy. RIP to a legend among mere normies.. Also, Roky and Dr John a week apart. That fucking blows.
Shit man. What they say about death coming in threes really hit me this time. Roky, then Dr John, and now, Bushwick Bill.
I’ll never forget the time he randomly showed up at the end of an oh sees set to jam a medley of geto boys classics. got to dap and say whats up to him after. the drummer said they had no idea that was going to happen, completely unrehearsed. bill said they were his favorite band. RIP TO THE LEGEND OF BUSHWICK BILL!!

Ok. I suppose it's official. He passed two hours ago.
I will never forget that extremely hot June day at Free Press Summerfest in Houston, waiting for the Geto Boys to come out a half hour past their set time, only for Bushwick Bill to never show up.

I talked with Bushwick after recognizing him at some random show at Antone’s in Austin once. He seemed like a super cool guy. I couldn’t even tell him how much I had enjoyed his music as he kept going on about how much of a legend he regarded Clifford Antone to be. I only got to see him perform once when he came out during Ice-T’s set at Fun Fun Fun but I remember seeing him on bills at the Continental. Strangely, one of my most vivid memories from his career was an appearance on Howard Stern where he was described as simply a midget rapper. A guest called in telling him he was a big fan only to have Howard accuse him of not really knowing this guy and then repeatedly telling Bill to take out his eye.
Of course fucking Howard Stern fetishized his small status.
Sigh.
It's hard to listen to some of the old Geto Boys stuff because of how homophobic some of it is, in particular Bill, as is true of a fair amount of old hip-hop. But Scarface is *the* best Houston rapper of all-time and they have some great tracks.
Jeff Austin, founding and former member of Yonder Mountain String Band, died yesterday at age 45. Details are hazy other than it was some sort of medical emergency that caused him to cancel some recent shows.
I haven't kept up with Jeff Austin's solo career, or YMSB for that matter, but Yonder got a lot of listening time during my heavy jamband period in "college" (2000-2005). They were always an incredible live act and were my introduction to bluegrass as a genre. RIP.

Not sure if I have witnessed a better mandolin player before live. Really enjoyed the Grateful Grass sets with Keller.
He was in Asheville playing a solo show in early May, the night before I saw the Tame Impala/Jim James doubleheader. Wanted to rest up and knew he came through fairly often - regret that decision now.
