Because who couldn't benefit from a little Neil Young every day?
First Up:
Neil Young and Promise of the Real Revolution Blues Whitewater Amphitheater New Braunfels, Texas April 26, 2016
From the Album On The Beach (1974) Performance 39 of 45 to date
Notes: Rick Danko and Levon Helm of The Band played on the album track. The song is about Neil's experience knowing Charles Manson. Here is Neil discussing the song and Manson.
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young Don't Be Denied Wembley Stadium London, England September 14, 1974
From the Album Time Fades Away (1973) Performance 70 of 151 to date
Notes: The CSNY 1974 tour was considered the first stadium tour. Neil has said that Time Fades Away is his least favorite album. It was never released on CD. It is only available on vinyl or, more recently, PONO. The verses are autobiographical and chronological but Neil reverses the fourth and fifth verse in this version.
Video #3 - "Where even Richard Nixon has got soul"
Neil Young (solo) Campaigner RAI Theater Amsterdam, The Netherlands February 20, 2008
From the Album Decade (1977) Performance 23 of 23 to date
Notes: Decade is a (highly regarded) "Best of" album that includes five previously unreleased songs, including this one. In the early 2000s Neil often changed the later refrains of the chorus to sing "Where even George Bush has got soul".
Neil Young and Crazy Horse Walk Like a Giant Madison Square Garden New York, New York November 27, 2012
From the Album Psychedelic Pill (2012) Performance 28 of 66 to date
Notes: The band typically ended performances of this song with 8-10 minutes of feedback and distortion. (You have my permission to skip that part if you choose.) The album version of the song is 16:27, but is only the third longest song on the album. The jams get longer in later years. The large prop amplifiers onstage are recycled from both the Rust Never Sleeps 1978 tour and the Ragged Glory 1991 tour.
The "daily or so" portion of this sort of fell apart in the last week. I was on vacation in a house on the North Shore of Lake Superior all week. I intended to provide a few posts but that fell to the wayside in favor of rest, relaxation and other activities, not to mention more than a few Odell IPAs.
Video #10
Neil Young and Band Rockin' In The Free World Saturday Night Live New York, New York September 30, 1989
From the Album Freedom (1989) Performance 44 of 583 to date
Notes: This was Neil's first of four appearances on Saturday Night Live. The backing band was a one-off. It included Poncho Sampedro from Crazy Horse, along with Charlie Drayton and Steve Jordan, for both of whom it was their only show with Neil. Neil wrote the song in one day based on a throw away comment from Poncho after a tour to Eastern Europe fell through that they would just "have to keep on rockin' in the free world".
Neil Young and Promise of the Real Till The Morning Comes/Cripple Creek Ferry Theater Mogador Paris, France January 25, 2016
From the Album After the Gold Rush (1970) Performance 1 of 1 to date (Till The Morning Comes) Performance 4 of 4 to date (Cripple Creek Ferry)
Notes: Both songs were released in 1970 and this was the first (!) ever live performance of Till The Morning Comes and only the fourth ever for Cripple Creek Ferry. This was a private show.
Neil Young with The Bluenotes Ordinary People Lakeside Amphitheater Darien Lake, New York August 19, 1988
From the Album Chrome Dreams II (2007) Performance 6 of 26 to date
Notes: While the song was performed exclusively in 1988 and 1989, it was unreleased until Chrome Dreams II in 2007. This version is almost 13 minutes while the album version is actually longer at over 18 minutes.
Neil Young with The International Harvesters Nothing Is Perfect JFK Stadium Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Live Aid July 31, 1985
From the Album A Treasure (2011) Performance 1 of 34 to date
Notes: The song was originally unreleased but later included in A Treasure, one of Neil's Performance Series releases. Neil and Crosby, Stills, and Nash each played their own sets and then later joined for two songs in their first live performance together in over 10 years.
